Official 2013 Class Recruiting Updates Thread

Brandon Arnold is contemplating a visit here after coaches visited him last weekend. He is a safety and an Oregon State verbal commit.

Noticed pantherhawk has another twitter name, @lovescoldsnowsx. Malik retweeted his b.s. a few times.

Too many people caught on and blocked him so he made another one. He uses "Jablonsky" as a last name. Can't imagine he randomly chose that last name. He most likely did it to take a shot at the hockey player who got seriously injured.

Do you think pantherhawk aka lovescoldsnowsx is none other than the ruggedly handsome, but soon to be fired Kirk Ferentz?

Great News! I wonder if he could be a spring admit. Also, It appears to me that Kill and his staff work harder and smarter at recruiting than Mason and Brewster ever did. They're like the EverReady bunny, they just keep on going and going.

I think they definitely outwork Mason's staff but not sure the same can be said for Brewster's. The one advantage they have over Brewster is that with staff continuity they have a much clearer picture of what they are looking for in a recruit and they have a more clear plan in place. Still remains to be seen though what level of talent they can recruit because right now the schools we are beating out for players typically are not schools in AQ conferences. Most of the players we have "commited" at this point are only really getting looked at by MAC schools or schools at a similar level. Doesn't mean they can't play just a fact that very few of our recruits have other Big Ten offers or are receiving a ton of interest from other Big Ten schools.

Not factual. We currently have 14 commits. Of those 14, only 5 (Myrick, Salzwedel, Santoso, Streveler, and Wipson) have no other AQ offers. At least get your facts straight when picking apart Kill like you always do.

Thanks Dpodoll - I always amazed how people feel free to say anything even if the facts don't back up their statements. You would think this was a presidential election.

From Joe C's new blog this am on Santoso:

“After taking the visit, I knew that Minnesota was the place for me. Southern Miss didn’t have the kind of academics I was looking for and Minnesota was a much better fit for me. I’m done taking any more visits and am shutting down my recruiting. I can’t wait to get back up to Minnesota!”
Sweet! Good to hear.

I have to think Nate Andrews is looking to chat up some girls from Minnesota

Hence the shout out to the Minnesota girls on twitter. The Alabama young man want's to know if they will fall for his southern charm. I doubt Andrews will have any problem finding lady's once he get's on campus.

Noah Scarver, TE from Washburn commits to Montana. He had a PWO from us and had a grey-shirt from Wisconsin at some point, though that was under Bielema.

Mikias Alipate also committed to South Dakota State.

Four of the five of these were fairly early commitments and had less time to pick up offers. Also, Myrick has said Georgia Tech recruited him pretty hard after committing to Minnesota.

In general, I think recruiting is going fairly well this year. Here's a quote from MV of The Daily Gopher:

Knowing all that, I keep remembering a remark on recruiting one of the Gopher staffers mentioned to me over the summer. Paraphrasing, with the seven year contract, this staff has the freedom to build things "the right way." No quick fixes with a lot of JUCOs and/or "red flag" recruits other schools pass on. Recruit kids you can develop and know will "fit" with your program. And most importantly, each year, recruit a little better than you did the previous year. Do this continuously and eventually, as the coach said, "you'll be pretty damn good."

I can't help but look at the latest recruiting cycle and think out loud that even from the most critical of perspectives, recruiting is going reasonably well for Jerry Kill. In fact, the quality of out-state prospects legitimately considering the Gophers this late in the process seems, on the surface, better than Kill's first two recruiting classes. And even with a limited amount of scholarships available, the level of talent the staff is bringing in as potential Gophers for the remaining spots at cornerback (Marquez White), linebacker and wide receiver (Hunter Jarmon, etc.) is beyond encouraging, since each would have rated among the best prospects in the entire class for either 2012 or 2011. I could also show from my perspective how the per recruit average of Minnesota recruiting is better in 2013 versus 2012, though that's a separate stats geek post entirely.

That's a fair assessment. This year's class doesn't really stand out, but they are hampered by a bad in-state class. Last year, almost every recruit with any amount of hype was an in-state kid (Jamel Harbison and Rodrick Williams being the only real exceptions). Compare last year's out of state class with this year's, and I'd say there's improvement.

Absolutely LOVE all the Recruiting threads through the years. Here'S what I've learned:

- Stars mean NOTHING.
- There appears to be a direct correlation between the number of 4 and 5 star recruits and a team's long team's success.
- Brewster helped himself with recruiting by contacting nearly every High School in the state.
- Brewster burned recruiting bridges by not staying in contact with local schools.
- Kill is staying in touch with apparently, every coach in America.
- Kill won't recruit J.C. players, unless he wants to.
- Boise State and TCU show you don't NEED highly recruited kids.
- Boise State and TCU have shown that success will come regardless of recruiting if you limit the number of games against "better" teams to two or three a year.
- Rating services for recruits be they Rivals, Scout, ESPN, Scouts Inc., Lemming, Match.com etc. are a JOKE! They have no idea what they're doing and basically are STEALING your money.
- We all KNOW that Kill is doing a good job in recruiting, much better than Brewster or Mason was.
- We all know this because....? Yeah, got nothing there.

Maybe old news but Jonathan Walton has DE committed from Penn State. Looks like he is not even looking at us after a visit at the end of November. Sounds like South Carolina, Auburn and Tennessee are new favorites. I noticed on ESPN that it appears he does not have an offer from us anymore, anyone know if we pulled his offer after he committed to Penn St?

Honestly, who cares? He's not coming here either way.

The staff has moved on. I think we end up with a combination of 2 more high school LBs which could be: Dixon, Spearman, Riley, or Coleman.

I have been waiting for Salzwedel to get a Badger offer.

I think he got lost in the shuffle as they targeted Chikwe Obasih and Alec James early on and got commitmets from both, although James might flip to Oregon.

Spearman is a long shot I think. Anyone hear anything on George Williams from FL?

On the Iowa boards they seem to think he wants to go to Iowa but his parents want him to stay at Illinois.

Dixon, West, Webb, and Thompson. I think these 4 are the most likely to commit. I don't even know if we have 4 scholarships. According to the Daily Gopher's grid we have two available, but they have Moulton on the grid and that seems to be a question mark.

Kill should be given credit for getting in on what would be cosnidered better prospects considering Minnesota but improved recruiting isn't just getting your foot in the door.

That might be good enough for now but in the next 2-3 years for recruiting to legitimately be improved some of these deemed better prospects need to attend Minnesota and not just consider attending.

MV also doesn't account for Bobek in there, so it equals out.

That said, I'm sure there are lots of things that will come out in the coming months that we don't know about in terms of people coming back.
