NIT Game #1: #1 Gophers vs. #8 High Point [ESPN3, 7:15PM]

Nice game for Joey King. With his work ethic and attitude, I expect good things over the next two years. I hope he hits the weights hard over the summer.

So much for my prediction of a 35 point blowout. Lol. High Point has two players who would probably start for the Gophers right now.

35 point blowout was extreme, but a healthy little Dre would have made a big difference, IMO.

You must not have seen Malik's shot selection that last month. Any coach without a bias would have sat his ass. I'm only stating the obvious. Has nothing to do with bashing/praising anyone.

Haven't been watching the Gophers much this year?

Since he played 34, 35, 35 minutes in three games from 1/22 to 2/1, Smith has averaged 12.7 minutes.

First 21 games he played at least 12 minutes with 11 games over 20 minutes and 5 games over 30 minutes.

Last 12 games he's played 1 game over 20 minutes with three games under 10 minutes. He played six minutes against Wisconsin in Indy and six minutes tonight.

I know. Deep down, I didn't really believe it would play out that way. All of the top seeds are playing down to the competition.

so who do want to face? Utah or St.Marys? Haven't seen st.mary, seen a little of utah, and they remind me of wisconsin somewhat with their slow down offense and waiting til end of the shot clock to take a shot, not sure how we match up with that.

Too bad Coleman isn't playing yet for St. Mary's.

On Predict the Score Thread, BOUNDOUTPASSDUNK whined because all of his numbers were taken, so he made a prediction and won the thing. No amount of skill will ever replace dumb luck!!! :)

I don't understand your new attacks. What is your deal? I just responded to some wonderful posters here, that's all.

You responded to someone saying we should talk about the game, and essentially agreed with him. Yet your posts were not about the game either.

I'm not trying to start anything, just thought it was kinda ironic.

Is it too late to enter?

All my numbers for Mega Millions were taken. Hopefully, it yields the same result.

True - these guys are not a bunch of schmoes. If their center does end up playing in the NBA, that'll be one more than we have on the roster. The more I think about it, the more I appreciate the job Richard has done with this squad.

After a good first half and several good minutes of the second, the ESPN3 feed on my computer has really gone into the crapper. Just me or anyone else?

Edit - as soon as I hit enter, the better feed came back

I tried to stream this on my Samsung Smart TV, but kept losing the stream after every time out with commercials. I used a laptop computer to access the audio stream, so I used a combination of the two to follow the game in the first half. For the second half I used my desk top to stream the ESPN3 video stream and didn't have any problems.

Sounds like Lil Dre will play Sunday according to Pitino.

Pitino says he expects Mathieu to play Sunday. His injury was a hip injury that was initially hurt in practice

The question remains: is it a full strength Lil Dre, or the slowed down version we saw tonight?

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I love me some Lil Dre, but his advantage is his quickness.

I don't know if bars will have the game since it's on ESPN3...

That ended up being a problem. Went to MinneStoa's house. We called Senser's and they said they were playing it, but his place was closer. Can't believe a local sports bar didn't broadcast something that was the home team on a feed as mainstream as ESPN 3. This isn't like I asked them to log into some obscure site to televise tomorrow's U20 cricket match between England and India.

And to answer the question posed before... Mav will start if Mathieu doesn't play next game. And we'll probably lose. Because Mathieu is our best player, not because Mav is not good.

You want to bring up some of your earlier comments about Mav. What a phony you are.

What are you talking about? I said we'd probably lose our next game if Mathieu can't play. Not because Mav isn't good. Mathieu is our best player so we are screwed without him.

I like our chances (even if we have to play with Mathieu) against whatever chumps survive a 4/5 NIT matchup.

Thought Mav played a strong game. I'd rather see us move Big Dre over and go with Mav at SG than starting Mav at the point. When he is a catch and shoot player, Mav can be pretty effective.

Also, if we could either get EE to learn to play offense like Big Mo, or Big Mo to learn to defend like the Goose, we could have a really good center next year.

Yeah I thought that was a given when I said I thought Mav would start. Mav is a SG now, not a PG.

Bleed is trying to do that but some People are not following his lead. Like a poster said, everything is about the old coach when you say the smallest negative thing about Richard.
You really are a one trick pony, aren't you?

Mav was in his element tonight playing against mid-level team in High Point. One would have to say that tonight was the high point of Mav's Gopher career!!!

However, it was obvious in the last 5 minutes of the game that someone other than Mav needed to be handling the ball. Mav is just not good at securing the ball and dribbling in traffic. If we have to live with Mav and Mathieu doesn't play then we'll be in a bind. Mav really shouldn't get more than 5 minutes per game, that was even obvious tonight. Like I said, this game tonight was against a team that Mav should have been recruited by and played for. He'd be a solid contributor for High Point...he's not a B1G caliber player. Tonight, however, he helped the team and for that I am grateful. He can relish this game as a signature to the four years he played at Minnesota.

That was just an ugly, ugly game. I don't know how playing a game like that helps the Gophers improve at all. I caught some of the St Mary's vs Utah game tonight, and it's pretty clear St Mary's wants to play and the Gophers will have to come out with a lot more energy on Sunday to continue to advance in this tournament. Giving up 81 points to High Point is just brutal. It certainly has to be very tough to get up for an NIT game 48 hours after getting left out of the dance, so their should be a sharper performance on Sunday.

St. Mary's looked like complete garbage for most of the 1st half as well. It happens.
