Niko’s roster construction

Heide's was more unique if I'm not mistaken, he's a Purdue legacy and grew up a Purdue fan. Don't blame a kid for that one at all. McAndrew I think they could've made a play at but there was nothing to sell at that time.
Pretty sure McAndrew's dad played for McDermott when he was an assistant at UND. So there was also a connection there. (We probably wouldn't have landed him anyway)

While we wait for news on this front - not that I'm disappointed, I'm just impatient - I'm curious if anyone has thoughts about the possibility of market inefficiencies in the portal? e.g. We know and understand that experienced players with a track record of performance command top-level financial commitment. So too can players that were highly recruited and have a lot of potential, but had uneven (or worse) performances to date.

What types of players might greatly outperform the financial commitments they command on the open market? I'll throw out two possibilities:
  1. Second time in the transfer portal. --Might be a turnoff to some coaches/programs. Worth noting this describes Dawson Garcia, though he was driven by personal reasons.
  2. High 3 star or 4 star recruit that didn't play in a P4 program. --You'd have to really trust your HS scouting report, but these sorts of players would have upside. He's not alone, but Daniel Freitag fits this description.
I agree that every coach should be looking for fit, but Minnesota will never spend the most money in its conference, so I'm curious about where there might be value.
The churn is so common, there are efforts to get players to review their thought process of entering the portal before giving up their scholarships. There is, apparently, many who enter the portal and end up with no replacement scholarships and NIL money. I wonder if we could sponsor a boot camp this summer of failed players who demonstrate potential and heartfelt desire to reform. I would think some were on the edge of academic disqualification or other trouble. If we held a difficult bootcamp to weed out the character problem players, we might see an interesting, overlooked pool. Minnesota has an effective academic unit to support the players development, and we could lean into that to help them focus and recover as people. A hybrid academic/basketball boot camp.

So the Marines?

This sounds a lot like the Fred Hoiberg Camp for Troubled Young Men that used to be in Ames.

So does this mean they are far too high given the lack of top commitments?

If I recall $1 Mil was the highest last year. WA to the Great O.

The secret to sky rocketing baseball salaries was convincing the owners to introduce scarcity into free agency. Giving the owners 6 years free meant placing an artifical limit on free agent salaries.

Fans like consistency. so we want to keep players around. As far as keeping salaries low, having free transfer every year will actually prevent them from going up like were used to elsewhere due to quantity of avalable alternatives.
This is correct. There are roughly 350 teams and approximately 5600 players. Not all teams are shopping the.portal. many players will wind up disappointed by having to take any spot available. We are in a rough outlier spot having to completely overhaul a roster multiple times in thee past 4 years, but that is more an indication of poor roster management and reason to dismiss the coach. Ironic that our high need/demand drives up prices for our limited budget.

If it landed Fred players... I don't know if we will or will not get recruits to fill our entire roster anytime soon. Do you think we will?

Do you think Medved will try to poach Winter from Wisconsin? I have no scruples left in me so poaching seems rather desirable.

No

No indication winter is even interested in leaving
Put out the open for business sign/ bat signal.
Demonstrate by offering every MN kid in the portal the opportunity to play at/near home. Give them the opportunity the prior regime never offered. Build it, they will come. We need bodies to fill a team roster, then show off the coaching accumen. Go get em Niko!

Winter isn't that good we need to go all out.

Saw that the market is $2.5-3M range. That is 70% of revenue share going to one player. As predicted that puts us back to who has the best NIL. Clearing house for NIL better be strong or absolutely nothing changes.

I wonder how many players legit would be in that 2.5-3 mil range? Would have to be a special player to demand that big a chunk of available funds.

What a messed up world college basketball has become.

Gopher's next roster, so far includes one half-time starter from last year who will certainly be a starter next season. Besides that, we have nothing worth talking about. Winter was a starter at WI and is 7 ft and can shoot 3's. Don't think he'd transfer to MN, but if he wanted to, he'd be a nice addition to an empty roster and most certainly be a starter.

Must Have Minnesota Connections! Or we are not interested.

Not sure why Jeff is just reporting this today when we knew this the day of the press conference....
Probably don’t listen to press conference would be my guess as there are 350 plus teams but I do agree. Would imagine puts a few dozen tweets out a day.

not saying i wouldn't take him, saying he's not worth all this speculation and trying to bend rules (tampering) to hopefully pry him from Wi to come home

Haven't read anything about "tampering" with regards to Winter or any player and haven't read much about Winter on the GHole either.

Is there even still tampering? Who knows anymore.
Someone replied to my comment citing tampering wasn't worth the risk for attempting to recruit Winter from WI. I had never heard of tempering in the NIL/transfer era until the other poster mentioned it.

I'm going to guess that most tampering is done by players reaching out to players and or players reaching out to coaches.

coaches can't reach out to players on other teams roster

Mostly I'm just saying Winter isn't an option and not sure why the push. Anyways,, I'm moving on
