While we wait for news on this front - not that I'm disappointed, I'm just impatient - I'm curious if anyone has thoughts about the possibility of market inefficiencies in the portal? e.g. We know and understand that experienced players with a track record of performance command top-level financial commitment. So too can players that were highly recruited and have a lot of potential, but had uneven (or worse) performances to date.
What types of players might greatly outperform the financial commitments they command on the open market? I'll throw out two possibilities:
- Second time in the transfer portal. --Might be a turnoff to some coaches/programs. Worth noting this describes Dawson Garcia, though he was driven by personal reasons.
- High 3 star or 4 star recruit that didn't play in a P4 program. --You'd have to really trust your HS scouting report, but these sorts of players would have upside. He's not alone, but Daniel Freitag fits this description.
I agree that every coach should be looking for fit, but Minnesota will never spend the most money in its conference, so I'm curious about where there might be value.
