Niko’s roster construction

Funny also in thinking, that we're never entitled to any of the best players and throwing shade on anyone asking why.
So assuming you're referring to Eaglestaff, is he the *only* best player in the portal? I mean, you did say players (with an s at the end), so I'm inferring that even you think there are other good players left to choose from.

You have every right to be unhappy once our roster is built if it doesn't live up to the talent you hoped for. There's a pretty good chance that a lot of other people will agree with you if that's the case. All I'm saying is I'm not going to throw my hands up in the air every time we miss out on someone I want to be a Gopher, because we're not going to get every player we want. I'm not sure any team is.

I want the Vikings to sign every good free agent every year, but they're not going to because 1) money is finite and 2) other teams want those players too and are competing with the Vikings for their services. I hope you find that analogy applicable to Gopher's situation.

Stop being logical.

Let's review...
You made a post ridiculing posters for thinking we should get "the 10 best players."
Nobody ever said anything like that.
Ever.

There ARE folks however, who literally contend we can't compete for the best players. Already making excuses. I can point you to a post that literally says it's ridiculous to think we should have even consider Eaglestaff, because, you know, REAL basketball teams were interested.

Why are we so happy Medved is here if we're already making such lame excuses?

I get it....some fans panic when they see a few players picking a new school but they seem to forget that there are still a ton of players in the portal and more are entering every day.

Just have to let the process play out and see how things look when the dust settles.

Ben was good at finding some decent pieces but struggled to build a team. Hopefully Niko proves more capable of assembling a full roster that can compete in the Big Ten.
This is the first half hour of a poker game. Coach is going to look at each opportunity and see what works and fits. Manage the money. Don't panic and the players (like better hands in poker) will come. We are going to have a lot of money to spend as we see players that fit the system.

1. We have different definitions of ridicule.

2. People that contend we can't compete for the best players are wrong. People that suggest we can get all of the good players are also wrong.

3. I'm happy Medved is here because I expect and hope he will be better than what we had. I also hope he elevates the program to where we expect to get any player we want (maybe we can agree we're not at that point as a program yet?). But we'll never get all the players we want. Which was my issue with your post in the first place, is that was how I was interpreting your point.

Fair enough.

I also expect Medved to do better than Johnson. But that's not the bar I hope to judge by. I mean, how could anyone NOT do better?

I also realize it's only a week. But it's a week of pretty much all bad news. Azuma staying is good news. What else?

I was completely wrong on Johnson, I liked the hire. I hope I'm dead wrong on Medved. But so far, I see no evidence.

Heide? WTF? Have you seen anywhere that he is even remotely interested in transferring? He already left home for a vastly superior program (which is also his father's alma mater, incidentally), and should he choose to transfer, he'd also have many other vastly superior programs lining up for his services.

I'll happily eat crow if hell freezes over and he plays for the Gophers, but I'm quite confident I needn't be concerned about that even existing in the realm of possibilities.

As long as you were creating pie-in-the sky scenarios, why didn't you create a 2025-26 Gophers lineup with Flagg and Knueppel in it?
Well, thank God you chimed in here all of we inferior basketball minds are so much wiser now that you chimed in.

Nothing to argue with there.

I am expecting Niko to far exceed Johnson, I will not be happy with being a bubble team year in and year out. The top 1/3 of the conference consistently is where this program needs to be. That's my bar for success. I'm also conceding that might not happen by year 3, but I am fully expecting an upward trend by that point that makes us believe it's attainable.

I don’t think we should have expectations that Niko’s gonna be able to come in and solve the NIL issues and put together a better than .500 team for the upcoming year. There is just not time to get all that done. Next year is where the rubber will hit the road. If I were him, I would take a good chunk of one year
left to play kids just to keep the ship afloat for next year and his powder dry for 2026.

Anything other than a NCAA championship next season will be viewed as a failure.

No to all of this. No reason not to compete right away. We have competitive money because of revenue sharing. You either load up with multi year guys or go to win right away with seniors. You do not play for 2026 by bringing in a bunch of one year rentals. That makes no sense. I fully expect Niko will put together a better team than Ben put on the court last year.

Why would 2026 be any better in an unlimited free agency college basketball environment?

Outside of Jefferson de-committing which would not have been a surprise if not for the incorrect reporting that he was staying the day before, what "bad" news has there been? Like 2% of the players in the portal have committed and no one we were seriously in on. No CSU players have gone elsewhere.

Why would 2026 be any better in an unlimited free agency college basketball environment?
Because the NIL money’s not gonna just show up out of thin air immediately. I’d hate for him to “settle” for middling players who will handcuff us from getting where we need to be say two-three years down the road. It’s just unrealistic for expectations to be that he’s going to fix most of what ails is in year one.

We are going to have about 5 million to pay players because of revenue sharing + NIL. We have plenty of money and Niko will inspire more NIL than Ben did.

You think Niko, at best, will only be one win better than Ben was this year?

It's OK to take a few plays off being the resident annoying board asshole. It was one thing when BJ was here and there was fodder all the time, but you are actually amping it up less then one fucking week into the new coach's tenure.

Not even a week.

I'm a bit concerned we hired a new coach and gophers still didn't play in Elite 8 this weekend

TF are you so angry about?
You got your coach. You're giddy with excitement. Speak no evil!! Everything is fantastic! Beeg even has us flush with cash!
Why do you care what I say? Afraid I might be right?

What's truly amazing is how you can read everyone's mind.

Good call. Next years Gopher's lineup:

G: Isaac Asuma
G: Anthony Edwards (Sophomore)
F: Cam Heide
F: Lebron James (Freshman)
C: Victor Wembanyama (Freshman)
6th: Kevin Durant (Sophomore)
7th: KAT (Sophomore)

On a real note. Cam is a Minnesotan that has struggled a bit at Purdue. He has gotten minutes and has decent shooting #s. It would not be absurd to see a future with him transferring home. Also a guy that has averaged 20 mpg and averaging 4.7 ppg, 3.6 rpg, and .6 apg would not have universities lining up for him in my opinion. Him transferring home is more realistic than Dawson getting another year IMO. We will soon find out I guess.
I recall that we barely recruited Heide out of high school because it was so well known that he wasn’t considering us. He was a Purdue commit from the start… He ain’t leaving.

How many are you fighting today? At least three.
