News on Flip Saunders

Thanks Seany, for your comments.

And its for guys like you that I DO try to be brief. I just forget sometimes or get carried away and then, well, you know, blah, blah, blah, lol.

You're welcome, man.

And trust me, I often feel like ranting too, and if I allowed myself to do so, I could go on, and on, and on, and how that's just entirely understandable product of frustration, as we are a fan-base starved, but how hope always lives on in spite.

And how maybe we might smack one right out the park here, with the perfect hire and perfect fit, and how therein lies the hope we as fans live by.

Anyway, don't sweat it, as we are all the same team and on-board that same train.

With all of the negative press, and it being so anti-Minnesota, or anti-Gophers, or anti-Norwood Teague, I have this feeling that,

NT and Ellis are kind of outsiders. And that's not necessarily bad, but...

with all of the negative press, Minnesota sucks, who would want to move there, the weather sucks, Gopher fans are losers with too high of expectations, the Gophers have always been horrible at bb and they suck and they should know their place, how dare they fire such an honorable and righteous and good man and INCREDIBLE coach like Tubby Smith, Minnesota is SO irresponsible with their money, and they have horrible facilities...

I personally would like to see an Alum, like Flip, get other alums to donate for the new Practice facility, and I would like that Alum to be the reason UMn brings in the #1 recruiting class, being all of our LOCAL Big 3 recruits. So an Alum coach, bringing in Minnesota talent, and Minnesota money to fix our problem ourselves.

I just don't like the idea of these outsiders, coming in, making us look bad by firing Tubby, only to hire one of their unknown to the masses Villa 7 outsiders, to come in here and take YEARS to fix the mess we Minnesotans made of our situation.

I keep reading people saying don't worry, Norwood knows what he is doing, whoever he hires will be an incredible hire, all will be well, we need to relax and trust him.

??????????

How do we know for sure that Norwood Teague knows what he's doing?! Seriously?

Just like Shaka did well at VCU, but might have come here and failed, because his style might not of worked in the Big Ten, isn't it possible that what has been working for Norwood Teague at VCU and other mid-majors might not work here?! We have different needs here, and different issues?

I mean, I want to trust that he knows what he's doing. I do. Because I fear that Flip isn't going to even be considered unless they get down to their 8-10th choice, so because of that, I HAVE TO trust him. He's got to be able to get one of those other 7-9 guys ahead of Flip, so if he doesn't know what he's doing, it'll be another long 4-6 years before we can fire whoever that guy would be and then more negative press, and blah, blah, blah all over again.

I just think its time for a Minnesota guy to fix Minnesota's problems.

Think of what that would not only do for the bb program, but the University AND the state as a whole.

Here's a possible scenario in relation to Flip that I haven't seen advanced yet, but I think could be possible. . .

Flip obviously has an interest in the U of M and more than likely has had conversations with NT, at least at the casual level about the state of the Gopher basketball program. He's been seen watching the games of Jones, Vaughn, and Travis (perhaps not all three, but certainly at Jones' games) and has been a regular on the radio programs around town talking about the Gopher program. The assumption is that Flip has been lobbying for the job when/if it opens up, and it now has opened up.

However, is it possible that within the conversations that Flip and NT have had that Flip realizes that while he'd like to be involved in the program, perhaps it's not in the capacity as head coach, but rather as a very public booster? Perhaps his presence at the games of the prep superstars isn't about getting an early recruiting edge, but rather to showcase the support he offers for the "U"? Also, could his presence on the airwaves and Twitter serve the same purpose?

I'd certainly be on board with a Flip hire, but there are reasons to be concerned that he's the right choice (age, limited and long ago time coaching college basketball, interest in national recruiting). His name has also been floated amongst the group looking into buying the T-Wolves-if accurate, that's a lot of irons in the local basketball scene from prep to college to pros. Maybe Flip recognizes this and isn't looking for the all encompassing job that being the head coach would involve?

A near ideal situation? NT/Ellis get their man, whether it's someone still coaching in the NCAA tournament or another who they're quietly working out the details of the contract as we speak. Flip remains an ardent supporter and booster of the program and assists in drumming up the financing for the practice facility. Perhaps Flip is both of these people-the next coach, plus biggest booster.

It's total speculation on my part, but I think this scenario is quite possible. Before too much longer, it will all shake out and we'll have our new coach and we will see what role, if any, Flip has with the program.

If there is any truth to the spectulation that Flip's hiring could kick start practice facility and generate immediate interest by the three 2014 MN elite recruits, then Teague should sign him up. Flip could be a home run or it is possible that his style would not work in today's college basketball. No one knows for sure. If Teague did hire Flip, get the practice facility built and have 2-3 of the MN kids join the program, it would be a whole lot easier to attract a top notch candidate 3-4 years from now if, worst case, Flips coaching did not translate to the college game. I actually think Flip would do very well at MN.

Maybe Teague is worried that Flip wouldnt be a lapdog like Ellis or a younger less wealthy head coach

Flips offensive "style" works in college, ask Fred Hoiberg.

How is it a conflict of interests?

Watch for a March Madness of 2014 release of the new feature length film titled "A CONFLICT OF INTEREST?...THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE VILLA 7 ORGANIZATION..." based upon the unreleased novel titled simply: "A Conflict of Interest?"

The controversial novel was briefly published on a web site, but was withdrawn shortly there after by it's author after complaints of it's length surfaced on a message board better suited and a format geared to one and two sentence communications.

The author of this novel, imthewalrus, profusely apologizes to any persons who may have been exposed to such a lengthy parody depicting the driving forces and possible mechanics behind the classic March Madness 2013 Men's Basketball Coach search at the University of Minnesota.

In SHORT: In this LONG over-due communication I would once again like to apologize for the very LENGTHY post that may have offended any one in such SHORT order.

Any way: I removed it. I had falsely assumed that perhaps if someone opened a long post that they would at a MINIMUM very quickly decide to not read it and move on. That was my error. I am so sorry...

If Flip was NT's guy the presser would have happened already. No chance.

My argument for Flip is he's the only one (outside of Smart/Stevens) who gives us a realistic chance at any of the 2014 guys. In addition, anyone outside of the A group will still be there in 2/3 years if Flip fails. Maybe not literally, but candidates of the same quality.

+1

Wren, start a thread called "REALLY long posts by REALLY long winded posters" lol

and you and I can post our novellas there. I'd read yours, maybe you'd read mine, and we'd get 5 or 10 other viewers, but who knows, maybe a Pulitzer Prize as well?! lol

Flips offensive "style" works in college, ask Fred Hoiberg.

How does Flip = Fred Hoiberg

Hoiberg was coached by Flip for two seasons.
He was also coached by Larry Brown for two seasons
Larry Bird for two seasons
Tim Floyd for 3 seasons
Bill Cartwright for 1 season

* Also was coached by Tim Floyd for part of his time at Iowa State.

So. . .why does Fred = Flip and not Floyd or Bird? They coached him more.

I won't believe a thing until I hear from Richmond Insider, Pav and their friends

I believe that Fred has been quoted as saying he runs a lot of Flip's offense.

I will never get the reasoning of hiring a coach because he won't leave. Don't worry about a guy maybe leaving someday, hire the best available. If a coach has a better offer someday, it means they made your program better and more attractive for the next guy.

BTW has this ever been a problem before? U Minnesota BB coaches doing so well they left for better jobs.

I will await peoples reply. TIA...

Do you believe in Miracles?! How about a MIRACLE ON WOOD?!!!! (short)

Flip = Excited fanbase

Flip = Coach who can actually coach.

Flip = Excited big money donors

Excited fanbase & excited big money donors = fast track to new practice facility

Flip = Excited former players/alum

Flip = Excited current players = NO transfers

Flip = Excited FUTURE players = getting 1-3 of the Big 3.

Our new AD, Nor WOOD Teague, a true blue blood product, accepts UMn needs to be proud of its MN heritage,

and hires a MINNESOTA alum, to recruit MINNESOTA boys, and excite MINNESOTA money, to

resurrect our MINNESOTA program on our own.

Flip = A MINNESOTA alum who comes home to lead a bunch of MINNESOTA locals to stay home AND...

Flip = inspires a bunch of MINNESOTA alum and MINNESOTA locals to donate to practice facility

End of story?! Minnesota brings Minnesota back to where Minnesota started, ON TOP!!!!

Before there was a UNC(Norwood's alma mater), or a Duke, or a UK or a UConn or a UCLA or an Ariz, there was

The greatest cbb program EVER up to the time of 1920.

The University of Minnesota. THREE Natl Titles, FIVE Conf Titles in 16 yrs. Send out players to start up Arizona and Notre Dame programs, and to lead the Mpls Lakers to be the first Pro BB dynasty.

We've struggled since that time. But not enough that we don't have enough players out there who can come home and resurrect our program on our own.

A dream?! Maybe. But so was winning a Gold Medal vs the mighty Russians in 1980 with a bunch of college players, mostly from Minnesota and the Univ of Minnesota.

Wren is very loyal to Minnesotans. Need him to throw in a few Prexy K references!!

I am not Wren. I'm fine with outsiders. I was fine with Tubby. I was fine with the Hollins boys. I was fine with Teague.

But Tubby didn't deliver. The Big 3 are there for the taking. And Teague fired Tubby and now the natl press is ripping Minnesota a new one.

So, there comes a point where we need to take a chance with OUR people to solve our own problems, vs bringing in more outsiders to fix our problem showing the world that we are losers and can't fix our own problems.

Comprende?

MinnesotaPride out.
