News on Flip Saunders

Marbury. Trenton Hassell and Malik Sealy also became good players under Flip. He has a track record developing guards now that I think about it.

Marbury...that's the one...forgot about the other two. Flip is a former point guard who would know how to prepare players for the NBA as well.

You cannot say this, it's impossible! He hasn't recruited since the 80's. You might have hopes that he'll be a good recruiter, but he hasn't shown he can recruit.

Nope, I don't give him credit for his run at a tiny school that is no longer in existance.

Nope, I don't think a good point guard will automatically be a good college basketball coach. Any interest in Ariel McDonald?

Come on Bob, even I think you're better than this poor effort.

What?

Hassell and Sealy were veterans before Flip ever had a chance to "mold" them. I'll give you Hassell if you really want, he was marginally better here than he was on awful Chicago teams. So yeah, Flip molded a 25 yr old less than average NBA player into a slightly less than average NBA player. Yay!

Billups? No

He was a 6th man here, we let him go and he went to Detroit and flourished. Flip got to Detroit and was traded for a used up Allen Iverson. Flip hurt Billups way more than helped him. You couldn't find a worse example of Flip's ability to mold a player than Billups.

Check our players rankings. . .

Which would be why we are where we are. Need more than the occasional #75+ player and we have a chance to do that with our in state talent.

Flip is on sports center tonight breaking down basketball. Only way grant gets on is if flip breaks down Alabamas nit loss.

Seriously? You think it's a fact that Flip can recruit? Do you really agree with his proclamation that we KNOW Flip will be able to coach?

Are you interested in guys who coach D3? Should we look at some of those candidates?

Do you really think the fact that Flip was a good Gopher player makes him a good coach?

What about what I said do you disagree with?

Just like Kevin McHale's big man camp.

Personally I do think McHale does get more credit for Garnett,...I will give you that one...as for Sealy and Hassell where were their career's along with Billup's headed before they came to MN?

Positive about Flip? Every single former player has endorsed him. Former players have mentioned he can get big time recruits. Ellis has endorsed him.

That can't go unnoticed.

Flip is the one of the right men for this job at the U where you like it or not bob...

Did you choose to ignore my Billups answer? Hassell's FG% jumped when he came to the Wolves. He was a starter on playoff teams here.

Mike Fratello calls games, he'd be a fantastic recruiter.

They recruited 3 guys and one of them is the 90th best player in the country (he's the worst). If you're expecting to find a coach who has been a better recruiter than Grant, good luck!

Bob you could not be more wrong about Flip. He still has a fire and a desire to coach. I have talked with him at football games and I think he would be great here. I think he would get a well qualified energetic staff that would improve the team.

Ervin Johnson was another less than average NBA player who started on a playoff team (like that validates a player), should we pat Kevin McHale on the back for developing that big man?

I answered your Billups question, scroll up.

He was a backup here and he went to Detroit and flourished under Brown. Flip got his hands on a developed player and in a couple years he was traded for trash in Denver (where he flourished again).

Not to mention Billups was already considered a draft bust and Sealy a poor teams journeyman...

Are you serious? Billups was lost until he came to the Wolves. He played well for us and doubled his money when the Pistons signed him.

That's fine, I can't argue with that. That's just opinion and I hope you're right because he's likely the guy. I'll cheer for him if he's our coach and I hope I eat crow. Bookmark the page, I'll put a tagline about how big of an idiot I am if I am wrong and he does well. But you just listed opinions and they can't be argued against. Essentially, you're saying "I have a hunch Flip will do well".

Personally, I hope we hire someone where it is an issue as to whether or not he's going to leave for another perceived "better" job - that tells me we're winning! I hate the argument for Flip that "he'd never leave". Who cares? If some young guy comes here and takes us to the final four and somebody else hires him away, that's a good problem to have.

I don't know who I want now, but for whatever reason, I have reservations with Flip - is he motivated? Is he going to work harder than Izzo/Crean/Coach K/Calipari/etc? Is he going to hire his friends and create a college version of the TWolves country club rather than the best staff? Does Flip resonate with any recruits outside of MN? if he makes it to the NCAA, is that going to be "good enough"?

I don't know...

He wasn't lost, he's a talented guy. He just got WAY better in Detroit, until Flip got him and traded him for a washed up AI and then got WAY better again in Denver.

Pump the brakes a little bob, you are trying to go in way too many directions with this one.

The only reason he was a backup was because the Wolves were saddled with Brandon's contract and did not know how to keep Billup's. Detroit's President showed up at the Airport for him for a reason.

Nope, I was responding to 60's guys post and implied that I wasn't serious. Those are the main points in 60 guys post, so which of them do you disagree with?

And you think it was Flip?

He got slightly better from the age of 21 to 25, yet you credit that slight improvement to Flip? Really?

Billups didn't become a star until he got to Detroit under Larry Brown. He was good here, he was really good in Detroit. That might be mostly developing as a player (naturally).

Check his last season here. He was just as productive his last year here than his first season in Detroit. He did not get WAY better there. He already started his ascent with the Wolves. Flip trading him has nothing to do with developing him. Bad personnel move? Sure.
