News on Flip Saunders

Brad Stevens has been on top of my list but I really don't see him leaving Butler for almost anywhere and my 2nd choice has been either Flip or Shaka and it looks like Shaka has made the decison to stay at VCU, so Flip it is!

Probable -- he's been fired from his last three HC jobs.

John Calipari: FIRED from coaching. Rick Pitino: RESIGNED mid-season from coaching due to negative pressure. Sure didn't keep Memphis and Louisville from hiring them, for good reason.

Grant is twice the candidate that Flip is.

If this were anywhere but MN, everyone would prefer Grant to Flip.

Grant inherited a program that was REALLY struggling (20-30 over the last 3 years in SEC), he has gone 39-27 in the SEC, he has recruited well. Flip has been run out of the NBA.

Mark Gottfried: 5 straight NCAA tourney appearances at Alabama from 2002-06, including the 2004 Elite 8 (lost to eventual champ UConn).

Anthony Grant: 1 NCAA tourney appearance (0 wins) at Alabama in 4 years starting with the 2009-10 season.

Flip was watching tyus last 5 games or more. I think he saw this coming and wanted to get a start on recruiting.

So what?

The team was 20-30 over Gottfried's last 3 seasons and Grant unquestionably improved the team.

By that measure, we should compare Tubby's National Championship against any coach we hire.

Flip is a loser. He's a local Mike Fratello.

Lets see, fired from Washington...not sure that should be held against him given the talent they had...

As for Detroit...Detroit Pistons (NBA)

Saunders replaced Larry Brown as coach of the Detroit Pistons on July 21, 2005.[2] Under Saunders, the team set a new franchise record for wins during the regular season, finishing with a 64–18 record. Saunders coached the Eastern Conference All-Stars in the 2006 NBA All-Star Game in Houston, Texas.

Upon entering his third season as Pistons coach, Saunders became the longest-tenured Pistons coach since Chuck Daly's nine-year tenure (1983–1992).

Saunders was fired June 3, 2008 after the Pistons lost to the Boston Celtics in the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals; Detroit president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said the team needed a "new voice".[3]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip_Saunders tells more...actually other then Washington, a pretty impressive career.

My argument for Flip is he's the only one (outside of Smart/Stevens) who gives us a realistic chance at any of the 2014 guys. In addition, anyone outside of the A group will still be there in 2/3 years if Flip fails. Maybe not literally, but candidates of the same quality.

Chill anyone saying Flip is a bad coach is just trying to troll.

Here we go....Gopherholers on to candidate #2 Flip.

If we don't land one of the big fish left (Buzz or Stevens) then we should hire Flip. NT should know if we have zero shot or a good shot at those guys.. make the judgement call and move.. fast.

Would guess not much will happen tonight with Flip in Chicago and doing Sportscenter spots for the Bulls and Heat game.

Last two years he signed a total of three guys. One committed in 2010. So he's had two commits in the past two years. Granted both had Georgetown offers.

You can only sign the amount of openings you have.

Those 3 recruits:
4 star PF
4 star C (6th best in the country)
5 star SF

You can't sign more players than scholarships you have available.

I'm genuinely not trolling, I think Flip would be the worst candidate of the bunch.

I can't think of a single player he has helped develop (unless you credit him for KG).

Sorry Bob

Flip is a winner. You are probably not old enough to have seen him as a leader on the court at Williams Arena. You probably are not aware of his accomplishments as the coach at Golden Valley Lutheran. I don't remember details but they won 40 in a row or a big number. He was an assistant for the Gophers. He won multiple CBA titles which is impossible if you can't solve problems and adapt to situations. He, along with Ed Prohofsky and I suppose McHale gets some credit developed KG. But I think Flip demonstrated his ability to develop players.

As many have said...failing (being fired) in the NBA has been a stepping stone for national championship college coaches.

Flip absolutely can recruit! He's been building relationships this past year. He can inspire the fan base and donors. If Brad Stevens is not the guy....Flip should be.

And no, Flip wouldn't be the guy for UCLA but he is for Minnesota.

Alou Kane's brother? One of those guys was rated #90. Meh.

who's career he rescued btw...and who was the guard that originally played with Garnett? Can't remember his name, just his ego over Garnett's contract. His play diminished badly after forcing his way out of MN.

Marbury. Trenton Hassell and Malik Sealy also became good players under Flip. He has a track record developing guards now that I think about it.

Well said 60's guy...along with the CBA being all about developing guys.

You cannot say this, it's impossible! He hasn't recruited since the 80's. You might have hopes that he'll be a good recruiter, but he hasn't shown he can recruit.

Nope, I don't give him credit for his run at a tiny school that is no longer in existance.

Nope, I don't think a good point guard will automatically be a good college basketball coach. Any interest in Ariel McDonald?

So spin it the other way...let's say Teague really thought he had Shaka...fired Tubby...but lost Shaka's interest. Now Teague is screwed - He may be forced to hire a stiff as time goes on.

Ugh........... Stopppppppp....
