New gold helmet??

I'd like to see a mat gold and maroon camophlage helmet

We need to explore flag football. No helmets required, so we can tell the players without a program.

Dude, maroon helmet is NOT old school. It started with Mason. Old school is GOLD

Huh? They were wearing maroon helmets from the late '70s until the early '90s. Mason resurrected them after the awful metallic gold helmets of the Wacker years, but they definitely didn't start with him.

What always bugs me is we haven't been able to find a consistent maroon over the years, bouncing between red-based and the current brown-based (my preference). One would think our school colors were fixed and non-negotiable, but clearly not. Hopefully the school will stick with the current mix because for the most part uniforms across the board look better than they ever have.

STOP THIS NOW.

THESE PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ENCOURAGED OR ELSE THEY WILL TRY TO OUTDO THEMSELVES IN THE FUTURE.

I AM USING ALL CAPS!

If you really want to make your point you should do it 18 times using different color combinations.

In case anyone wants to hear from a wider audience than Gopherhole, there is a thread about this at reddit.com/r/cfb

Thanks for that link. Most posters seem to really like it, especially the Ski-U-Mah. Even our B1G rivals gave it positive reviews.

This passage from the aforementioned article caught my eye. Many on this forum would argue that we have a tradition as strong as the below teams. And many others would argue that our tradition's shelf life has passed.

Tradition? Tradition is great where it’s a sellable, marketable commodity. Alabama can sell tradition. Penn State can sell tradition. Michigan can sell tradition. At those places, tradition is the differentiation, but at the schools where it’s not? They have to go in the opposite direction. And no one has done that better, or more consciously, than Nike and Oregon, which for the purposes of this conversation are essentially one and the same. Oregon’s tradition at this point is the overtly embraced lack of tradition. Change.

I like the fact that despite all the changes through the years, the block M has been a relative constant on Gopher football helmets.

Much of this is a matter of personal taste. I agree with those that have said they'd like to see the white pants retired. I can live with white pants on the road, but I have not been fond of white pants under maroon or gold jerseys.

I think these gold helmets will look very nice if they are matched with gold pants both at home and on the road. I'm pretty sure my personal taste will be not in favor of having the gold helmets over white or maroon pants.

These are excellent. I do not understand the hate.

The Block M did not come to Minnesota Helmets until 1968. The Gophers wore white helmets with numbers on the side before then.

Gopher helmets have changed repeatedly over the years. During Warmath years helmets were white with numbers on side and maroon and gold stripes down the center. Last couple of years with Murray team changed to Gold with Block M and maroon and white center stripes. Cal Stoll brought in the all gold uniforms with metallic gold helmets with block M and no stripe. During end all Stoll era helmets went Maroon no stripes. Helmets remained that way through Salem, Holtz and Gudi. Wacker years brought back the metallic gold. When Mason arrived the maroon helmets returned and they have remained that way (with sporadic white appearences). No long standing traditional look. Except for a limited number of schools (Texas, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame) just about every school changes its look every now and then. As long as the Gophers remain Maroon and Gold its ok by me.

Yep, and this is why I chose the words "the block M has been a relative constant on Gopher football helmets" and why I didn't say "The block M has always been a constant on Gopher football helmets."

Sorry for the selective reading :)

Not 100% up to date but you can see most of the changes (with Gophers as well as lots of other college teams) in helmet design here:

http://www.nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/

Even traditional schools such as Michigan have tinkered with their helmets from time to time.

There's also a nice website that has photos of most helmets used from 1940 - 2011. The all gold leather helmet used from 1940 - 1950 is very cool:

I like both helmets - this gold one takes me back to Paul Giel days. Warmath used a gold helmet occasionally but most seasons had the white one Gophers wore a bit last year.

We have a winning history here, but not a winning tradition. Traditions are ongoing and passed down from one generation to the next and that isn't something the Gophers have been able to do.
