Joseph not meant for Tubby's System; Tubby's offensive system is lousy
Before I start, let me give props to the many and wild ideas being professed regarding the various Gophers' players. Wow, it's pretty amazing.
I don't really give a **** about who theoretically or realistically quit on the team. It has no real value. What I see is how the offense and defense flow/function during the 2010-11 season and what I see is that DJoseph wanted to absolutely pound the air out of the ball on offense. He literally almost never got the ball to the right person at the right time. It has been amazing to watch him miss entry passes, wing passes on the break, etc, during the past few weeks. It's painful to play with a floor leader who just doesn't have the mind or sense of timing to make things happen. I think Joseph has some real talents in basketball (i.e. back off those of you who want to pounce) and he has shown them at various stages (e.g. second half of last year). However, he is absolutely terrible at leading a team and running the point (his passes are literally never on time, he dribbles about 15x too much, and he simply isn't in the right spots on the floor to deliver the ball (ask any decent coach and I'm certain they'd confirm this; I'm from the Ken Novak system in the mid-90s)). Frankly, I think he's smart to move onto a new system. If he has any hope of moving onto the next level of basketball it wasn't going to happen in Tubby Smith's system, which is far to structured for his attributes. He needs a very open style of play and he might find that in Eugene. Plus, I'm pretty certain their academic guidelines are less strict than the U of M's (and I mean that as no swipe considering I manage an academic program at Stanford). In any case, the offense and team seem to have a better flow and understanding with Nolen on the floor. When Joseph was out there it was a bit of chaotic flurry and overdribbling. He certainly has talents and has shown them from time to time, but he needed a different system to show them on a more consistent basis. I think everyone is better off, although it does lead to a reduced bench for us. Ultimately, I literally HATE Tubby's offensive set but I think DJoseph leaving is probably healthy for all parties involved.
