Many are worse. Are other state high school leagues as poorly run?

Orono and East should be really good. Got some friend connections to the East team and would be awesome to see them go out on top.Caledonia and Albany Friday night should be a good one. Feel like these are two best teams in division. Orono may be playing as well as any team in the state and hoping Shakopee beats Wayzata just cause.
It's a joke that there are four classes. There should be three classes tops. The difference between the top 4-5 teams in 3A and the top teams in 4A is nothing. We don't get to see the best teams play one another.
Run into some of the same issues with metro vs out state advantages in open enrollment and resources. It's been nearly 30 years of 4 classes. It's a joke that there are four classes. That, and a lot of push by coaches association to have more spots. I think the league should push back and go to 2-3 - would increase attendance a lot.Agree. Do you think they have to go 4 classes because there are so many teams? I can’t believe how many charter schools there are…
That's another way you could do it. I agree hard to shift, especially with push from coaches association.Run into some of the same issues with metro vs out state advantages in open enrollment and resources. It's been nearly 30 years of 4 classes.
I think 3 would be ideal, but I don't see it happening. I'd prefer they just make 4A larger and make 1A smaller by shifting teams.
They've pushed over 10,000 on championship Saturday and change 2A and 3A around to deal with some of the crowds. That, and a lot of push by coaches association to have more spots. I think the league should push back and go to 2-3 - would increase attendance a lot.
Yes, but none of the individual games push 10k. If they could merge 3A/4A they would get much more of a draw from some addtl fans. It's just unfortunate it became such a big deal to have teams at state. Winning districts and advancing to sections in the past was a huge deal - long time ago - but actually a lot more fun than it is now. Getting to state not even that big of a deal with how first round games are handled and played on Tuesday and Wednesday. It's all been really watered down. They've pushed over 10,000 on championship Saturday and change 2A and 3A around to deal with some of the crowds.
Championship Saturday this year for boys and girls is
1A at 11am
3A at 1pm
2A at 5pm
4A at 8pm
It's a better TV product now. Back when our team went to state in the 90's they flipped back and forth on TV from Williams arena to the St. Paul Civic Center and didn't stick to one quarterfinal as they were played at the same time. That would be more fun. And, to be honest, having a packed house at Mankato State or Maturi Pavilion for a big section final is more fun than some of these first round games. This would be a fun topic to sit down over a few beers and figure outIt's a better TV product now. I agree that districts and sections were much more of a big deal and getting to state was hard. We played 3 sub-section/district games and then 2 section games to get to state.
If they went to three classes and had three games on Championship Saturday you'd likely get more people to stick around for the Big Schools at a chance to see a non metro team play a metro in the final.
I think the last game that was like that was when Buffalo beat Armstrong in the championship.
Buffalo is more or less a metro school nowadays since they're in the Lake Conference. It's a better TV product now. I don't think Wayzata is so much a transfer school. They're just so much larger than anyone else.Shakopee winning it would be great. Played together since 4th grade. Hate to see the transfer schools win (Wayzata/Cretin). Like Breck beating Lake City in 2A last year.
I agree they are metro. They are dropping back to 5A in football and back when they won they were not in the LAKE.Buffalo is more or less a metro school nowadays since they're in the Lake Conference.
Was referencing Wiggins (Benilde) and Anderson (Eden Prairie). Two key pieces that transferred in specifically to try to win a state title.I don't think Wayzata is so much a transfer school. They're just so much larger than anyone else.
It's extremely difficult to open enroll here because the schools are all so full and growing.
Just looking at my son's grade (7th) between travel and SW league, there are about 130 boys playing basketball, and that doesn't count the kids playing on the middle school teams that aren't playing in the other two leagues. So if we say 150-160 kids per grade - only maybe 8 will get varsity spots in high school. The pool is just huge for schools like Wayzata and Minnetonka (which has even more teams, but they are definitely heavy into open enrollment.)
I believe Wayzata, EP, and Champlain Park are the 3 biggest schools, then there is a little bit of a drop off to the rest.
Wayzata High | 3781 |
Minnetonka Senior High | 3514 |
Blaine High School | 3157 |
Champlin Park High School | 2978 |
Prior Lake High School | 2856 |
Eden Prairie Senior High | 2844 |
Shakopee High School | 2823 |
Stillwater Area High School | 2658 |
Edina Senior High | 2641 |
White Bear Lake Area High School | 2572 |
Maple Grove Senior High | 2453 |
Rosemount Senior High | 2364 |
Anoka High School | 2348 |
Eastview Senior High | 2328 |
Yep, that was a head scratcher. Not only play for the last shot, but also taking it to the basket to only (try to) tie the game. Not real sure I agree with Orono's coaching decisions. Down 2 with 30 seconds left and they essentially decided to play for the last shot.
Currently going to Yale. 44 and 31 in the two games.Groves is tough. He choked a FT at the end of the game today, and then threw the 2nd off the backboard (WTH) but he's impressive. I don't know if he's quick enough to play for the Gophers, but I do like his game.
