***MINNESOTA-PENN ST PRE-GAME THOUGHTS THREAD***

Mandel of SI Picks Penn State

30-24.

Penn State (5-3) at Minnesota (7-2)
The Golden Gophers haven't won four straight Big Ten games in a season since 1973. That drought may continue. Minnesota can stop the run, but not the pass, ranking 77th nationally in pass efficiency defense. The Golden Gophers' offense won't be able to keep up with Nittany Lions quarterback Christian Hackenberg and wideout Allen Robinson (130.4 receiving yards per game).

This is the biggest game our Gophers have played in a long long time. Three wins in a row is "a neat thing for those boys from up there". Four in a row including Nebraska and PSU is a "Holy Cow who is this Minnesota"? The bowl game changes...a lot! Recruiting changes...a lot. Local media attention changes...a lot. The week off to prepare for Wisky will change a whole bunch more than a lot. Suddenly the Wisky becomes a game with national implications and how long has it been? Go Gophers take care of business this Saturday!

I'm pretty sure this is the 3rd or 4th week in a row of playing their biggest game.

When was the last time we won a home game with this much importance and this many recruits at the game? We have historically taken a big crap in our pants in this situation. IMO, this is the game that tells us if we have turned the corner. NW was down when we got them, NU was one of those big time wins that we have gotten every few years and IN was a good win...but on the road against a team with a losing record that we almost choked away. If we beat PSU, a team that we are evenly matched with, at home, a helmet school, all eyes on us...chance to get to 8 regular season wins going into bye week...house full of recruits...day after BB team gets top 30 national recruit...well, we will have arrived. I will believe it when I see it and I aint seen it in my lifetime.

Yep, and if we keep winning, the next game will continue to be the most important

Oh, Wisconsin in two weeks would be incredible if we win this Saturday. Likely two 8-2 squads facing off at the Bank. Most important game in stadium history no doubt about it.

But gotta beat PSU to make that happen :)

This is a PSU team with something like 65 scholarships (due to the raping of children by a coach and subsequent cover up by JoePa and his bosses), it'd be hard to argue that they aren't, "down".

The Gophers should win this game, but I have a bad gut feeling about it for some reason. This feels like a trap game to me. PSU 31- UMN 13.

I would think the same thing, but this year feels different. In most years, we would not have converted that 4th and 10 vs. Nebraska, and would likely not gotten much going on offense after that. Most years, we would not have got a key turnover vs. Indiana down the stretch, but we made a play this year. Just doesn't feel like the typical Gophers to me. Gophers will come out strong in front of a sold out crowd and put up a good showing to set up the biggest game in recent memory vs. Wisconsin in a few weeks.

I think this will be a tough game for us as they have the quick strike capability in QB & receiver - like Indiana. Plus they'll be physically tough in a cold weather game. Pretty even, probably, with both teams able to run and pass effectively. Could come down to filed goals, mistakes, fumbles, etc.

True and most of them have.

Who will be the guys to step up this week. Last week on offense it was Cobb, Nelson, Engle, Williams and defense maybe RoJo, and Hill.

This week will it be the big IF (aka Isaac Fruechte)?

Wow, talk about subtle. Nicely done nokomismod, nicely done! :drink:

Thank you Iceland12 :)
I feel like some of the energy has left GopherHole with the Travis announcement (rightly so). Here's to hoping the Gopher football squad can keep the good vibes going tomorrow.

Briefly checked out the PSU scout message board, it seems like a mix of people predicting a win and loss. Not much confidence over there.

Scary. Giving up four straight TDs to Indiana was terrible, with a fifth likely. It was also familiar. This game is no gimme.

After being jilted by Reid, I need a win to cheer me back up. Have a sinking feeling about this game.

Penn State isn't Indiana offensively. I think the D bounces back and plays well tomorrow.

The weakest part of our game is our secondary. The strongest part of PSU's game is their passing offense. This scares me.

Cranking up the excuse meter because you can't deal with the Gophers winning, eh? We should probably just forfeit tomorrow to spare you the suffering from yet another victory.

I'm amazed at how every flaw the Gophers have is examined microscopically and PSU's flaws are ignored. Perhaps the biggest question with PSU is do they have the ability to play on the road so far they have two road meltdowns @ Ohio State and @ Indiana. They have had trouble scoring points in the red zone, their linebackers don't cover well, bubble screens give them fits. This week I look for a continuation of Coach Limegrovers's innovative play calling on offense, the defensive line to have a big day, and for Eric Murray to turn around and intercept a pass. I think we win by 10 to 14 points.
