Minnesota / La Salle Game Thread

I thought he would bring him back in at the under 4:00 timeout.

Agreed, I thought he'd be back in around ~4:30 mark; but I guess this time it worked well - Welch surprisingly didn't throw the ball away during that 3-4 minute stretch, and the team opened the lead. My guess: Tubby was waiting for the team to falter before making any replacements; not trying to fix what was (sort-of) working.

I've called Welch our most consistent player, not our best.

If by "consistent" you mean that along with consistently fair shooting you mean consistently throwing the ball away and consistently playing lazy D and consistently failing to block out the free throw shooter, then I'm in full agreement haha.

Im right here. I thought the Gophers played well. Rodney had a good game and Austin had a good game. Notice that the smaller the lineup, the better the team? I hope Tubby takes note that big and bigger is passe in college ball. You need quickness, 3 pt shooting and offensive movement. Sorry I wasn't here for the game chat, I can't get too excited about the NIT.

Of course I have NEVER been in a Gopherhole game chat because I am in another website that has one, but according to Ptski I am only here for losses.

You also need rebounding. And a good offensive inside game really spreads out the outside - just ask the Ohio State guards if they appreciate Sullinger, or the Indiana guards if they appreciate Zeller. Going small can definitely work short-term, but it's not a very good long-term strategy.

One big man is needed and against some matchups two big men. If you have big men that can run like Green and shoot like Green, you can have two all of the time. But college basketball is more about perimeter defense and 3 pt scoring than ever before. The Gophers got immediately better when Tubby dumped that awful high/low offense when TM got hurt. This flow offense is much better.

Total BS. He's been one of our most consistent players across the board. Easily our best pure shooter.

He is our best consistent shooter for sure. He can be lazy on defense, but overall he helps the club when he is on the court compared to others. he also helps handle the ball because Andre is not ready to carry that load.

a) the reason I am not ever on this game chat b) I wasn't on any game chat tonight because the site I go to didn't even get one going for lack of interest.

I guess I was confused when you wrote "I am in another website that has one"

You're just looking for a way to nail me. I understand. I had to respond to Parksi's dumb remark about how I am never here for wins, just losses.

I don't need an explanation I just wanted to make sure you were around for a Gopher\Tubby victory . I know you wanted a loss but it's all good!

Nope...just confused about the statement. Would have posted that no matter who had written it.

OK, I agreed with you that he shot the ball well and consistently. Name one other thing Julian did well this season, otherwise you saying what I said was "BS" is BS. lol

Right right because Tubby's job or how I think of him changes with a win over LaSalle. I have rooted for the Vikings to lose to get a higher draft pick. It was hard but I did it. I have never rooted for the Gophers to lose. Ever. Sorry to disappoint you. Unfortunately, they haven't.

This game was awesome...loved the pace...loved the aggressive action, and Rodney was a beast. He had some moments in the second half where it looked his hands quit working, but that first half was great.

La Salle folks were very nice to the few Gopher fans at the game...they were just excited to have a home post season game...big rebuilding year for them too. The fans around me were surprised at how good our young guards were and how much quickness and size we had...the basic sentiment was that if this was the 10th best B1G team, they were sure glad they didn't play in the B1G!

BTW - they had a 2 hour pep rally before the game with free food, drinks and prizes for students and alumni...it was really cool. Beautiful sunny and 70 here in Philly today and our Gopher's roll on!

I spent a year in Philly. Loved watching the Big Four, now the Big Five?. Great fans.

Don't be dissing the Big 5 by calling it the Big 4; I am a Penn graduate. Unless you lived in Philly prior to 1955, it has been the Big 5 for the last 57 years

Totally agree. Classy fans. Great ticket service. Great small venue to feel like you're a big part of the game. Felt like Oto was playing more to bring their big guy out of the middle so Rodney could post (though it was sometimes a struggle to get him as many looks as one might like). Good win. Still not sure why all their students left up by 9 with that much time left and they didn't bother to try to extend the game. Okay by me, though. Thanks for a great game, Gophs!

One thing I forgot, were the fans booing when Williams slipped and got hurt? It sounded that way on TV, but hard to really tell.

Oops 1979. I forgot Villanova. I enjoyed watching Penn alot.

No worries as long as you aren't omitting Penn!!! Their 1979 Final Four appearance is highly underrated (IMO) due to the lack of TV coverage of the tournament at that time. They also had some good tournament runs in the early 1970s

It seemed that way to me too, and I was like, "seriously?" but my guess is the fans saw the game stop when Rodney slipped and thought their team was going to get called for a really ticky tack foul, and they were booing that.

I agree. When I am at a sporting event and play is stopped while a player from the other team is getting up slowly, I usually assume the refs are going to call a penalty based on how slow the player is getting up rather than on what actually happen.

Great win for the Gophers. Oto and EE need to quit passing up 5 foot shots. Just sayin.....
