Minnesota / La Salle Game Thread

Someone asked why Ralph didn't play, if there was any info about him, so MY POINT is that the announcers didn't tell the viewers a thing about Ralph.

Sorry, my reaction to your post is my general disappointment over his 4 years at Minnesota, so talented, and so seemingly without passion when he plays. I could be wrong about my view of him, but it is the way I see him when he plays.

Ralph would have been better than EE tonight IMO. we saw Rod abuse them down low and they never doubled. Ralph usually does well against smaller defenders and not against the double. I think he would have scored a lot for us.

I'd have been more worried about his slow D and lack of rebounding. Eliason brings both D and rebounding, along with a lot of hustle, and is why the team is more effective when he is in the game instead of Ralph. Ralph was a nice kid, I just don't think he ever grew into his long body enough to be the excellent player we all hoped he could be.

Heard Mike Grimm this afternoon saying Ralph was still favoring his knee during practice today. Said if he played it would be only spot duty.

Haven't heard anything about Chip.

Chip played a little bit I believe?

But with the Hollins' playing well, he wasn't going to take their minutes. Why he didn't get more of Mav, Welch, or Coleman's though. I'm not sure. Maybe Tubby is picking his scholarship opener (for Trevor obviously) and figures the conversation will be easier if he is already wanting to leave?

1. Rodney played very well. Good to see some fire in him. That rebound late in the game was very impressive. He could have a monster year next year.
2. Even though Andre Hollins didn't have a great game, he continues to impress me. He's playing with a lot of confidence right now.
3. Austin Hollins had a very good game, showing some ability to get to the hoop.
4. Oto played fairly well, even though his numbers weren't anything special. Once he gets more confidence in his outside shot, he'll be a really nice player for us.
5. This is a game I think Sampson could have done well.
6. Don't understand why Armelin didn't play more than he did. This is the style of game he could have done very well in.
7. I'm sure they are nice kids and they work hard, but seeing Ingram and Ahanmisi in at the same time almost made me throw up.
8. The turnovers, once again, were troubling. Even though La Salle didn't take of the ball any better, at least many of their turnovers didn't result in fast break points the other way. I've got to believe we were outscored by a lot on fast breaks.

Overall, a solid win for us, especially being that it was on the road.

Rodney has already missed about 17 bunnies and why in the world is Maverick even touching this game? Dumb dumb dumb.

Elliot is getting abused down low.

Did we think we'd just roll over them?

dumb dumb dumb and no Welch is not a sharp shooter, he's a back up pg/sg

This game was awesome...loved the pace...loved the aggressive action, and Rodney was a beast. He had some moments in the second half where it looked his hands quit working, but that first half was great.

La Salle folks were very nice to the few Gopher fans at the game...they were just excited to have a home post season game...big rebuilding year for them too. The fans around me were surprised at how good our young guards were and how much quickness and size we had...the basic sentiment was that if this was the 10th best B1G team, they were sure glad they didn't play in the B1G!

BTW - they had a 2 hour pep rally before the game with free food, drinks and prizes for students and alumni...it was really cool. Beautiful sunny and 70 here in Philly today and our Gopher's roll on!

Goes to show a couple things - the Gophers were a pretty good team for being as young as they are; the B1G was outstanding this year - too many good teams; the Gophers were quite under-seeded as a #6 NIT seed. Reasonably they should have been a #2 to #4, with Northwestern a #1 to #3 seed and Iowa a #4 to #6.

But, the very low seeds for the 3 B1G teams can be explained quite easily. Look at the NIT Board of Directors' school affiliations - almost all of them from the Confederacy, 5 SEC reps, I believe, plus Texas, and other SE ACC schools, ZERO B1G reps, and few Midwest reps, for that matter. Thus, the only surprise here is that the B1G actually drew their 3 deserved teams, given who was doing the selecting.

EDIT:
NVM, it would seem he got some time in the second half.

Conspriacy theories much?

Dr. D., come on my friend, I was living in the moment about J. Coleman. He WAS a star for a couple of games; sometimes stars are born then are shrouded by defensive adjustments. I'm hoping that his 8 - 15 foot j will shine through next year and he learns to finish, because he should be able to load up at the line.

Rodney - great game. Some shaky moments early, but this just shows how far he has come. The one-handed dunk in the first half was sick.

Dre - So excited to see him next year. He is legit, even if he didn't have his best game. Love the energy he brings, and he is a constant threat to score.

Austin - he's just a really solid player. Great game for him today.

Oto - I liked his effort especially on defense. He got some big boards late. His offense will come, he has a good stroke. Should be a solid guy off the bench for the next 3 years.

EE - A bit of a wallflower this game, but this was definitely not his style.

Mav - Wow he was bad and looked totally overmatched.

Ingram - See comments on Mav.

Chip - Like others, surprised he didn't play much. Seemed a bit strange, but frankly I really like shortening the bench. Seemed like the guys who were playing were in a good rhythm, why mess it up??

Joe - He's quick, athletic and strong. That being said he has to develop an outside shot, otherwise he's so one-dimensional it doesn't help us offensively. However, I do like his defense; you don't see him much on defense but that's because (in my opinion) he is a good defender that rarely gets out of position. I believe that's why Tubby plays him so much as a frosh.

Box score on ESPN does not include Chip

I thought I saw him out there. At first I thought it was Mav, but then saw it was 2-3 and not 1-3.

My eyes could have been deceiving me though as I don't believe the player in question shot and I looked away when he had entered and never really saw him exit. Not usually the case with Chip.

Could be wrong, but thought I saw him out there for a moment.

When it's Sunny in Philadelphia a series is born. Good win Gophers.

According to CBS Gametracker;
Andre 39 min
Joe 41 min
Otto 1 min

La Salle
Pettis 41 min
Peterson 61 min

I beg to differ

Chip played a few minutes in the first half. He came in at the end of Mav's time on the floor. There was a timeout and most of the starters came back in. It wasn't for very long.

You were right he got 3 minutes. I don't remember seeing that when I checked the box score at half time, stat people must have made the same mistake as you.

Lol. It's fine if you don't think he's a sharp shooter, but how does him being a back up pg/sg prove that he's not? Are sharpshooters not allowed to be a back up pg/sg? He has to be some other position to qualify?

The Hollins brothers were very impressive this evening.

+1

When Andre went out the Gophers struggled until Austin took over.
Not an easy win - La Salle played tough.
I liked that the officials let the teams play.

Hey where is the Minngg?? Oh that's right he hides after a victory.

Yeah, I was getting worried there. I sure didn't like that call on Andre on his 4th foul, but they came through without him. I thought Tubby was going to bring him back in a little sooner also, if only because he's such a good FT shooter. Good win!

I thought he would bring him back in at the under 4:00 timeout.

Lol. It's fine if you don't think he's a sharp shooter, but how

He has had a very good shooting season, I doubt he will shoot as well next year, but let's hope so. He is not as effective as Andre and on most big ten teams he comes off the bench. Makes some real knuckle head plays, drives when he shouldn't and his clock management is awful.

Ya, he comes off the bench for our team too...

I was impressed by the fair (if imperfect) reffing tonight! I did agree with the foul on Andre - he put the LaSalle rebounder in a precarious position by undercutting his legs back-to-back. It was frustrating, but the right call, unlike the ridiculous call Austin got his 4th on against Michigan.

Im right here. I thought the Gophers played well. Rodney had a good game and Austin had a good game. Notice that the smaller the lineup, the better the team? I hope Tubby takes note that big and bigger is passe in college ball. You need quickness, 3 pt shooting and offensive movement. Sorry I wasn't here for the game chat, I can't get too excited about the NIT.

Of course I have NEVER been in a Gopherhole game chat because I am in another website that has one, but according to Ptski I am only here for losses.
