My sources: In temperament, personality, younger Pitino more like Billy Donovan than his father."

Well, a Mrs.Pittino was involved too. :)

If that's the case, it took Billy several years to build a good team. Are the fans here willing to wait? Tubby raised the bar here. lets see if the young guy can match that.

But in all fairness...Norwood officially started in July but was hired before then. The previous AD brought Norwood in on the process late since he was the one who would ultimately have to work with whomever was hired. But it is true that Norwood didn't make the hiring decision.

Yeah, just irritating that your very "balanced" understanding of the situation never is explained. Teague was involved and was introduced as the A.D. the day before Grant was hired. That would be. as you said. pretty "late in the process".

I wouldn't hire Isaiah Thomas to walk my dog. He'd probably trade him for magic beans or something.

Go away; Tubby started from the depths of Clemson in the ACC challenge and brought us to relative competitiveness. You are not a fan of the program

I'm OK with this hire. I think that the Gophers program is in a state that they were not going to get an established big name coach to come in here. We just don't have the tradition, facilities or reputation to attract those sorts of guys, IMO. I think that our best route was to nab an up an coming coach looking for an opportunity in a major conference.

Pitino doesn't have a lot of head coaching experience but he grew up around one of the best and has some very good experience as an assistant coach. So, given we couldn't get one of the more experience young coaches this seems like a decent choice...IMO.

You have to be kidding me. If you look at W/L and tournament success he's only marginally better than Monson.

The more I hear the more I like the hire. If we can't get one of this year's hot names in young coaches, I'd rather have next year's than last year's. I'll predict boldly that this will turn out better for Minnesota than USC and endfield.

He obviously lost the team after the Humphries year and all of the accomodations, but prior to that, he had 3 years of 500 or better records in the Big Ten which Tubby hasn't approached. Not defending Monson because he was in over his head, but Tubby severely underperformed relative to expectations.

Interesting hire. I like that his team at FIU played at a fast pace, and I would expect him to bring some of the same elements as Rick has with the full court press and traps and changing defenses. I hope he does bring that style into the Big Ten. Playing that sort of uptempo style would I think help recruiting. This is definitely a gamble.

Mike Wilbon on PTI: "I think that is a GREAT move by Minnesota"

Do you know the definition of the words temperament and personality? Hint: they have nothing to do with X's and O's

Agreed. If it is a style anything like his dad uses at Louisville I am excited.

Love watching that team play.

Haha, what in the world kind of wording is that? He's been selected as a finalist? Have reached an understanding? LOL

They used the same language when Teague was hired - "Norwood Teague has been selected as the finalist for the position of Director of Athletics" or something similar. They use "finalist" because the University has to legally disclose all finalists for major positions like this, and if he's the sole finalist, he's the only one they have to acknowledge being in the running. Probably also a wise choice to hedge with terms like "finalist" and "understanding" if some last minute snafu botched the deal and they have plausible deniability that he was never officially hired.
