Mark Coyle Sole Finalist for U of M Director of Athletics position

Don't read too much into family issues. He has wanted to get back to Minnesota for a long time according to those that know him. He is from the Midwest and loved Minnesota while here. Great hire

May 11, 2016
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (05/11/2016) - University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler has announced Mark Coyle as the finalist for the university's director of Gopher Athletics position.

Coyle is currently the director of athletics for Syracuse University where he has been since June 2015. Prior to Syracuse, he served as athletics director at Boise State University and as deputy athletics director at the University of Kentucky.

Coyle, 47, served as Associate Athletic Director for External Relations at the University of Minnesota from 2001 to 2005, where he was responsible for managing the marketing and sales unit, athletic communications, the ticket office and licensing. Under his guidance, the marketing staff was recognized as the top marketing staff in the Big Ten Conference.

Coyle is visiting campus Wednesday to interview with the search committee, and meet with coaches and other leaders in Gopher Athletics, faculty, and senior university leaders as part of the final steps of a comprehensive national search.

Jim Boeheim on Syracuse athletic director Mark Coyle's departure: 'It's shocking'

The university announced that current AD Mark Coyle, who came to SU from Boise State just last June, will be leaving the university "for family reasons." In a statement, the school said Coyle will be "leaving the University for a position at Minnesota."

Minnesota's athletic department released a statement today that Coyle was a finalist for its athletic director position.

Boeheim said he had no inkling that Coyle planned to depart SU.

"I would say it's a surprise," he said. "I really liked Mark Coyle. I thought he was really good. Thought he had a good grip on everything in a relatively short period of time. It's shocking. I like him a lot and I thought he was doing great."

Looks good for the U. Exact opposite of loud mouth mega tongue. Little Richy's days are numbered.
Richard's days will come down to how they perform on the court. If the team has a good year and brings in another decent recruiting class he will be just fine. Of course if they suck again, Coyle will have an opportunity to leave his mark on the program. With the progress of the Athletic Village, this job will be more attractive a year from now than it is today

I just asked someone that worked in Gopher athletics with Mark Coyle and this is what they had to say about him:
- He's fantastic
- He's from Iowa, this is way better for his family
- His wife is from the Midwest too, they both love to run
- He excels at strategic partnerships
- Strong work ethic
- He's understanding of the challenges of the position
- Puts donors first
- Supportive of coaches
- Cognizant of supporting women's sports

Looks like we found a winner here.

3. Served as deputy AD at Kentucky and helped oversee men's basketball
More than ever, an athletic director is judged by his ability to open up revenue streams, and Coyle cut his teeth doing so at Kentucky, where he helped bring in more than $140 million in donations and other funds.

That he later worked closely with John Calipari and the men's basketball program is a bonus given the importance of SU basketball as the athletic department's flagship program.

So he knows how to cheat without consequences? Calipari is Teflon.

This is an unbelievably great hire! This guy was awesome when he was here and has made stops at successful sports schools (Kentucky, Boise) so him coming back as AD is just about as good as it gets. Coyle is head and shoulders above all the other candidates. We should all be very happy he wants to come home.

Maybe.

I mean some of those are just base qualifications to not get neglected on paper alone.

Strong work ethic... better be considering hours and such.

This is a really nice hire. Someone with P5 experience, someone who's overseen top football and bball programs. Right now I can't really think of many downsides

Let's hope he stays here longer than he stayed at Syracuse.

Nice hire - hope he can just keep everything clean.

As bleak as the news has been around here for the past year, this certainly seems like a bright spot.

Near perfect hire? He has 1 wart.

He cited family "reasons", not concerns. They wanted to come back to the Midwest.

This is correct.

He'll be 3 hours from his hometown (Waterloo) and 4 hours from where he attended college (Drake).

I was taking a liking to Phil Esten, as he was quietly building a good resume, he is from thew area, but he had no actual AD experience.

I like the Mark Coyle hire better. He was here before with the Gophers and has family ties in the area.

Where did his wife come from?

I think his wife is from Davenport. Family loved Minnesota and it has been a goal to make it back here.

On the surface this seems like a very nice hire. Given all the dysfunction surrounding Gopher athletics these days, I was worried we would end up having to settle for a candidate without head AD experience. Getting an AD with P5 experience is a big bonus that I did not see coming with this hire. This feels like a ray of sunshine in what has otherwise been some dark days over at the U.

Welcome Mark and family!

SKI-U-MAH and Go Gophers!

Great things come in threes Thibs, Boudreau, and Coyle

Wow. Even MNGoldenGophers1 with a positive post. You know it must be a good hire. :cool02:

Also in that order of good hires.

I don't mind Coyle. I'm happy we didn't go with the "business guy with no experience who would like to just do something else" route. But I don't know how anyone knows how good this guy is going to be.

what's the difference between lone finalist and hired? why doesn't the Strib just say "hired"?
