The university announced that current AD Mark Coyle, who came to SU from Boise State just last June, will be leaving the university "for family reasons." In a statement, the school said Coyle will be "leaving the University for a position at Minnesota."
Minnesota's athletic department released a statement today that Coyle was a finalist for its athletic director position.
Boeheim said he had no inkling that Coyle planned to depart SU.
"I would say it's a surprise," he said. "I really liked Mark Coyle. I thought he was really good. Thought he had a good grip on everything in a relatively short period of time. It's shocking. I like him a lot and I thought he was doing great."

Looks good for the U. Exact opposite of loud mouth mega tongue. Little Richy's days are numbered.
Richard's days will come down to how they perform on the court. If the team has a good year and brings in another decent recruiting class he will be just fine. Of course if they suck again, Coyle will have an opportunity to leave his mark on the program. With the progress of the Athletic Village, this job will be more attractive a year from now than it is todayJim Boeheim on Syracuse athletic director Mark Coyle's departure: 'It's shocking'

3. Served as deputy AD at Kentucky and helped oversee men's basketball
More than ever, an athletic director is judged by his ability to open up revenue streams, and Coyle cut his teeth doing so at Kentucky, where he helped bring in more than $140 million in donations and other funds.
That he later worked closely with John Calipari and the men's basketball program is a bonus given the importance of SU basketball as the athletic department's flagship program.
I just asked someone that worked in Gopher athletics with Mark Coyle and this is what they had to say about him:
- He's fantastic
- He's from Iowa, this is way better for his family
- His wife is from the Midwest too, they both love to run
- He excels at strategic partnerships
- Strong work ethic
- He's understanding of the challenges of the position
- Puts donors first
- Supportive of coaches
- Cognizant of supporting women's sports
Looks like we found a winner here.

He cited family "reasons", not concerns. They wanted to come back to the Midwest.
Near perfect hire? He has 1 wart.
I was taking a liking to Phil Esten, as he was quietly building a good resume, he is from thew area, but he had no actual AD experience. I like the Mark Coyle hire better. He was here before with the Gophers and has family ties in the area. Where did his wife come from?
On the surface this seems like a very nice hire. Given all the dysfunction surrounding Gopher athletics these days, I was worried we would end up having to settle for a candidate without head AD experience. Getting an AD with P5 experience is a big bonus that I did not see coming with this hire. This feels like a ray of sunshine in what has otherwise been some dark days over at the U.
Welcome Mark and family!
SKI-U-MAH and Go Gophers!
Great things come in threes Thibs, Boudreau, and Coyle
