Mark Coyle Sole Finalist for U of M Director of Athletics position

Also in that order of good hires.

I wouldn't be sure about that. If Thibs runs our young guys into the ground the way he did in Chicago with Rose it will suck big time. Boudreau couldn't get it done in Washington with Ovetchkin, so why will he here?

Coyle, at 47, could be our AD for the next twenty years and has a great resume. Odds are the other two are out of town in less than 3, almost certainly 5.

I think his wife is from Davenport. Family loved Minnesota and it has been a goal to make it back here.

Krystan and Mark Coyle grew up in Iowa but met in Chicago, while she worked at Northwestern University's Medical Center and he worked for a public relations firm. They will celebrate their 16th anniversary in August.

Krystan Coyle was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and attended high school in Davenport, where her father worked at Creighton University. Mark Coyle grew up in Waterloo, the son of a cardiothoracic surgeon. He earned his undergraduate degree in English from Drake University in Des Moines and two master's degrees — one in sports administration from Florida State, another in teaching from Drake. His close friend, Ed Lewis, has known Coyle since first or second grade and said they bonded early as "the two nerds in school who both worked very hard."

Chicago didn't suck until Thibodeau was fired .... and I think it is pretty clear Chicago's front office ran him out fairly unprofessionally, and then Chicago took a big step backwards. Heck Chicago hired an offensive minded coach, something Thibodeau supposedly isn't, and they got worse on offense too... I think that speaks well for Thibodeau.

I'm with you on Boudreau.

I've no clue how to measure the new AD except that I do like he's at least got some experience.

Did Coyle play LB? No.
Does he have a ponytail? No.
Does he wear scarfs? No.
Let's not get too excited here.

I like this hire a lot but did Sid approve? Coyle was not on Sid's list?

Strong hire. Now (regents and admin) give him the support, freedom and resources he needs to be successful.

Boudreau couldn't get it done in Washington with Ovetchkin, so why will he here?

Boudreau falls into the group of coaches: Glen Hanlon, Dale Hunter, Adam Oates, and with Washington getting knocked out of the playoffs last night, Barry Trotz, who have all failed with Alex Ovechkin.

Sid's first article on the topic will be about how Coyle should find a spot for Kill. Book It.

As someone originally from the Northeast (Massachusetts) the culture shock moving from the Midwest cannot be overstated. My father still felt like an outsider 25+ years after settling there from North Carolina. He moved back less than two years after getting divorced from my mother.

Kill shot!

Coyle and his wife are both from Iowa.

Or are you saying this was a good hire since they will not be going through culture shock?

Meanwhile, back in the 'Cuse:

Gone … and leaving an aroma in his wake.

Again, if we dismiss the idea that the best way to handle a family situation is to take another job in a different time zone — and that would seem the way to bet — Coyle's sudden departure appears to speak poorly about someone or some thing.

The "someone" would be Coyle, who happily told stories about how his admiration for Syracuse was such that he'd worn Dwayne Washington-styled sneakers as an Iowa-raised teenager in homage to the Pearl … and yet has vanished for a big-city job in a conference, the Big Ten, with more gravitas that almost certainly pays more.

The "some thing" would be SU, which may have discouraged its AD with some kind of behind-the-scenes policy shifts related to budget matters, the Carrier Dome's future and/or other matters … and this, only a blink or two after having introduced Coyle amid the requite pomp and circumstance as the successor to Daryl Gross.

Either way, there's a whiff blowing our way, and it's smelling not at all like a fistful of posies.

So, now what?

Is Dino Babers, the new Orange football coach who didn't know of Coyle's retreat until told of it this afternoon by reporters, soon to be headed out the door, himself? What happens to all those staffers, so many from Idaho, brought on by Coyle?

Sid's gopher sports mantra is "Nobody Wants the Job." Sid always brags about what a great supporter of gopher athletics he is but nothing could be further from the truth.

Well it is closer to home so that doesn't seem THAT crazy...

Still yeah I don't blame the locals there for wondering.

Let's hope Coyle wasn't a jerk and told his boss in the morning and not after some school event last night.

So the question now is, does he keep Beth Goetz as asst. AD?

I hope they keep Beth around (assuming she isn't pissed about not getting the permanent job).

I like the hire and agree with the sentiment that this is as good or better than hiring Esten. I wouldn't read too much into the "family" thing. It's quite possible that is largely cover for the 'Cuse to ease the sting of losing someone they were so thrilled to hire a short time ago to what they view as an inferior university with an inferior athletic department in the middle of nowhere.

Looks like a really good hire. The fact that he knows the area and the university bodes well for a long term commitment. As someone above said, I hope he gets the resources, support and freedom needed to do the job right.
