Lil Ricky Cannot Coach

I'm saying... It's not worth your time explaining whether or not calling someone an African is derogatory or not. I'm with you on it... But convincing some of these guys you would think they grew up in a different era, which they might have.

"African" is not derogatory at all. If we had a center from Poland and another from Croatia, I probably refer to them collectively as the European centers. If someone considers terms like African, European, or South American insulting, I would suggest that person is the one with the misunderstanding.

I know how you stand on this. I disagree. We've done this before. Move on.

Just stop. Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than ....

What is there to disagree with? How can calling someone by their place of origin possibly be offensive? Is it offensive to be called an American?

I'll take that as your admission that you have nothing.

Dp. I'm not an idiot, go get your jollys elsewhere. I'm not going to get into a discussion on something that is unprovable, especially if you're taking that position. You feel one way I feel the other. You keep calling people Africans and act like its no big deal. I'll continue doing what I feel is right.

I'm happy for you.

It is good to see a good liberal like Dpod use "Africans" as a derogatory comment against our struggling big men.

I will be cheering on my fellow human beings and hope they have a great game today in a win against MSU! Go Gophers!

I wonder if the people who think referring to our African centers as African is offense have the same problem with calling Andrew Wiggins "Air Canada". Or calling Teemu Selanne "the Finnish Flash". Or calling Pavel Bure "the Russian Rocket". Or calling Toni Kukoc "the Croatian Sensation".

It's not a derogatory comment, nor am I using it as such. Keep the political garbage on the OT forum.

I have watched a few games this season. It seems to me that the kids are struggling to trust one another. The ball seems to stop moving and a teammate just holds onto the ball and then attempts an individual move to score. That is pretty easy to guard.
If Richard can coach, I would expect to see him teach his players how to trust one another on both ends of the court. If we don't see that trust developing, I think we can blame Richard for that failure.
This is just my observation.

Don't be so cranky Dpod. Go have a few Christmas cookies and some holiday fudge to cheer yourself up. We will let you take back your "Africans" comments and justifcations to save face and to continue to hide your racial feelings.

Go grab a six pack after you eat the goodies, have a nice big sandwich, and hope our fellow human beings playing in the paint for the Gophers have a big game.

Ski-U-Mah!

That's a pretty bold accusation with no evidence. I can't know dpodoll's real feelings but I have no reason not to take him at his word. I agree with him that you and others who have attributed nefarious motives to this term are the ones with the perverse understanding of language. You have an ironic screen name since you don't appear to be interested in "truth" at all.

P.S., I do know a couple of individuals who I consider to be honestly racist. Not surprisingly, neither one of them is a college or pro basketball fan.

Since the players came from Africa I don't see the issue. I am sure many of the players in the European basketball league that are from the states are considered American players.

Our worst problem is that idiot King. Needs to be water boy and let young kids develop. Lazy ass

Do you ever allow for the possibility that two reasonable, educated adults can arrive at a different conclusion?

The only way that two reasonable, educated adults could arrive at different conclusions is for one of those parties to read more into the term that its literal meaning. I'm not an expert in this area, but I believe the term for this is "transferance."

To be fair, I would give Lil Ricky one more year. But I wouldn't offer any protest or resistance if the new AD dumps him.

Hard to compete against a traditional power like Northwestern.

What is there to be fair for? If you cannot coach solid D and motivate the players to try, there is no reason for another year.

Yes and he should. I am as frustrated as anyone else but I think we need to stick with him for at least one more season.
Since Pitino is being compare to Brewster, in the another thread, I have to ask if you would have defended Brewster the same way.

Not really defending Pitino. I'm very skeptical at this point if he will ever be a good coach. And honestly, I'm leaning more and more towards him not ever being a good coach as time goes by. Also I never compared him to Brewster. They are a little bit different situations in my opinion. Brewster brought in a great recruiting class right away. Then did very little with them the few years after.

I will continue to say he probably should be back for one more year because:
1. We have a good class coming in.
2. We have two potential starters sitting out right now because they are transfers.
3. We don't have an AD and I don't trust anyone to make a good hire at this point. A year from now that may be and should be different.

Because of all three of these things, I would still probably wait. But I wouldn't be pissed off either if they let him go after this season.

I think you're kinda overrating how much impact that the transfers will have. I'm not going to say, give the guy a chance because 2 fringe-BIG caliber players are in the fold.

No, I am pointing out that the Brewster & Pitino comparisons are being made already. This is distressing to me because my recollection is that the same recruiting firm presented both of them to us.

I never said give him another year just because of the transfers. But all three things combined is why I would wait.

Then my answer would be no, I wouldn't have defended Brewster the same way because I don't think the situations are the same.

Yeah...I get that. I'm not necessarily on the bandwagon of firing him but I do just feel pessimistic about next year even more than I had before.
