Lil Ricky Cannot Coach

Yeah...I get that. I'm not necessarily on the bandwagon of firing him but I do just feel pessimistic about next year even more than I had before.

I'm starting to feel that way more and more as well. It sucks.

What sucks more for me than the performance today is I don't think this team has bottomed out as of yet. Hard to believe but I have the feeling it can still get worse this year.

This sense of impending doom seems to be growing.

I wouldn't call my feeling the team hasn't bottomed out yet "impending doom".
What would you call it? A rush to the bottom?

Because it's no longer impending?

Plenty to be concerned about I don't find my feeling the team hasn't hit bottom yet as doom for the program. Still believe Pitino can get this figured out.

I could never really tell what they were trying to do on offense today more than a pick by Konate at the point, an occasional penetration and dish or draw a foul, and the normal weave until 5 seconds is left on the shot clock and throw up a three. That was a zone Northwestern was playing but I assume it was a matchup, nothing the Gophers did on offense all night would have indicated what it was one way or the other. I can't believe that was a case of poor execution, I have to assume it was the game plan or lack thereof.

Every player on this team needs three in-depth courses:

1. Basketball fundamentals.

2. TEAM basketball fundamental concepts.

3. On-court communications.

I have never seen a team at this level lacking in fundamentals and leadership more than this team. The players are not smart enough, and perhaps not athletic enough, for the concepts the coach is attempting to get them to perform. Pitino would do well to realize this and dumb it down...a lot. Stop trying to force the matchup zone where players can find themselves way out of position due to lack of 1., 2., and/or 3. above. Play straight man and challenge each of your guys to stop their man or sit on the bench; or play a simple zone where players don't stray from their spot on the floor and don't have to make many decisions.

All these guys do is watch and chase the man with the ball, they pay no attention at all to other players around them, on either end of the court, leaving an opponent wide open in prime scoring position about every other time down the court. Konate, in particular, is completely raw in terms of decision-making. Along with King and Morris, he makes bad decisions on defense with consistency unbecoming of a starter at this level (not to mention his propensity for moving screens on the other end of the floor; but at least he's trying to open up something for his teammates there). On offense, these guys are clueless about how teamwork is beneficial...almost everyone other than King tries to do 1v1 moves, and then when they get stopped they throw up a tough shot or toss a terrible pass, usually, again, towards people like Konate whom they really have little business trying to force the ball into. Pass-backs and ball rotations are almost non-existent.

Because this team plays with such a lack of team basketball IQ, every player and coach displays frustration, and this is manifesting itself into a total disaster of a season. The season can be salvaged...not by trying to keep playing the same illogical schemes they've been playing (given the clear lack of ability to do so) and attempt to steal a few wins going forward, but instead by beginning to teach these guys how to play fundamental basketball and beginning to get these guys to trust each other.

This season's failure can be blamed on the coaches, surely, for not employing the right schemes for the team of players, but the players need to shoulder a lot of this blame too, they make very poor decisions with consistency on both ends of the court. There is a lot of teaching and learning to do, here. And this team has no floor leader. It's time for someone to step up.

I think you are on to something.

I think you are on to something.

he definately is. But the question of how to fix it is an age old one. Do you continue to pound them with the concepts they are not getting hoping that they finally get it or do you change the concepts to something they get and try to teach them another day?

The answer to that question and the ultimate decision that Richard takes will ultimately decide his fate at the University of Minnesota. That and if the new AD is hired from the Gopherhole members list.

LMAO!

Duluth, Winona, and Mankato would crush this sorry ass squad.

What a terrible coach. Pathetic. Do the bars and restaurants on Washington even get game day business?

Call the ticket office. Demand your money back. Demand that we hire a real coach.

Pitino is a loser. Watch the product on the floor and the Jucos and centers that he has out there.

I am old enough to remember the Dutcher era, when I listened to some games on he radio, and relished every Gopher game. Despite the awfulness of the Monson era, this is by far the worst era of Gopher Basketball ever, that I can at least be a part of. I have zero interest in going to Williams Arena and not much more interest in watching this team play on TV. Gopher Basketball is at the lowest it has been in my lifetime. Back in those days, the Vikings were number one, and Gopher Basketball was #2, unless the Twins were great (didn't happen much). This was never a "hockey" state either relative to 1997 or 1970's Gopher Basketball. Now, the Gopher basketball team is a laughingstock. Patrick R is 100 percent correct.

Recruiting is not relevant at all, if your staff cannot find mentally tough players who can defend. I sure miss players like Melvin Newbern or even Lawrence Westbrook who did not play much D but was at least tough. My lord, this is awful and it is not going to get any better.. Richard cannot coach and that is all that can be said about him. He is cooked.

This guy cannot coach, cannot lead, cannot motivate and needs to go. The non-descript SDSU coach would have been a much better hire.,
How much money will it take to get the UNI guy Jacobson? This is actually worse than the Brewster hire, although the message remains the same for any AD. Never fire a reasonably decent coach unless you have a good replacement in your pocket ready to go, or a very high percentage of hiring one.
