Every player on this team needs three in-depth courses:
1. Basketball fundamentals.
2. TEAM basketball fundamental concepts.
3. On-court communications.
I have never seen a team at this level lacking in fundamentals and leadership more than this team. The players are not smart enough, and perhaps not athletic enough, for the concepts the coach is attempting to get them to perform. Pitino would do well to realize this and dumb it down...a lot. Stop trying to force the matchup zone where players can find themselves way out of position due to lack of 1., 2., and/or 3. above. Play straight man and challenge each of your guys to stop their man or sit on the bench; or play a simple zone where players don't stray from their spot on the floor and don't have to make many decisions.
All these guys do is watch and chase the man with the ball, they pay no attention at all to other players around them, on either end of the court, leaving an opponent wide open in prime scoring position about every other time down the court. Konate, in particular, is completely raw in terms of decision-making. Along with King and Morris, he makes bad decisions on defense with consistency unbecoming of a starter at this level (not to mention his propensity for moving screens on the other end of the floor; but at least he's trying to open up something for his teammates there). On offense, these guys are clueless about how teamwork is beneficial...almost everyone other than King tries to do 1v1 moves, and then when they get stopped they throw up a tough shot or toss a terrible pass, usually, again, towards people like Konate whom they really have little business trying to force the ball into. Pass-backs and ball rotations are almost non-existent.
Because this team plays with such a lack of team basketball IQ, every player and coach displays frustration, and this is manifesting itself into a total disaster of a season. The season can be salvaged...not by trying to keep playing the same illogical schemes they've been playing (given the clear lack of ability to do so) and attempt to steal a few wins going forward, but instead by beginning to teach these guys how to play fundamental basketball and beginning to get these guys to trust each other.
This season's failure can be blamed on the coaches, surely, for not employing the right schemes for the team of players, but the players need to shoulder a lot of this blame too, they make very poor decisions with consistency on both ends of the court. There is a lot of teaching and learning to do, here. And this team has no floor leader. It's time for someone to step up.
