Koi Perich Transfer Portal

if he goes somewhere else he rides bench(much less playing time, and role)....bookmark this post. Lets bring it back up next year to see the results
Good point - along those same lines I was trying to think of other players we have lost in transfer (portal or otherwise) who went on to bigger things. Can anybody come up with some names? Bucky Irving I guess but that’s all I can think of.

I don't recall that. Someone else might remember.

I know we had Joshua Ola-Joseph transfer to Cal from here.

We had BJ Omot transfer from Cal to here.

Don't know about anyone who went there and came back.
Someone above named the guy ... it was farther back than I thought.

He never actually went there.

We don't have visibility to contracts like in pro sports but this feels a bit like the Vikings letting Cousins go - good player you'd like to have around but expensive, there are other decent and more affordable options, and there are other positions where the money would do more good. He also played worse in 2025 than 2024 which is concerning for one of your highest paid players.

I'm sure he'll find somewhere that will pay him more but if he makes some of the mistakes he made this year at somewhere like Ohio State, he'll probably spend a lot of the season on the bench.

Not a conclusion...haven't thought about it long enough to reach a conclusion but there are these factors:
1. He put his name in the portal...he's probably not doing that without a couple offers in advance.
I wouldn't, if I was as much of a talking point as Koi is in Minnesota. Difficult to crawl back to Minnesota.
2. But without offers in advance...safety on the charts earns the least money in the portal. The difference in money would not seem worth the criticism if it's say $100-$200k...and it seems we'd meet that as well.
3. The defensive stat numbers above are inline with my perceived value rank as a sophomore on the Gophers. Lots of potential but spotty production for the million dollars he likely got paid.
4. Only takes one interested suitor but if it doesn't happen quickly he may return. Will somebody give him $1.5 or $2M? I don't place that value on him. Anywhere else he does not have the home state adoration and even more pressure to perform. For many in Minnesota he can do no wrong...don't think Miami will offer much grace for missed tackles that result in opponents TD's or first downs.

Am I bummed to see Koi go? Yes. But I was disappointed with his play this year. Struggled to wrap up on tackles. Culturally it seemed he was more about Koi than he was about RTB. Sleeping on it, I would rather build more depth and use that money else where as Brown and Gousby can man the fort.

There is something about Koi that just doesn't quite click with me. I hate to call it this, but the "it" factor. Watching Antoine Winfield JR, he had it. When a big play needed to be made he made it. His Fresno State Game saving INTs, his punt return (which IMO is a top 10 PR all time because of that spin move). I kept waiting for Koi to have his moments and they just never really happened. Even a guy like Briean Boddy-Calhoun made more timely interceptions and forced fumbles (game saving force fumble against Nebraska).

I know we were all disappointed with Danny Collins and the defense but give the guy more time. There were some good games in there. I definitely think he can right the ship. I did miss Heatherman and Rossi though. Harbaugh Jr on the other hand...

The moments did happen with him. The pick at the end of the game against USC as a freshman and the pick six to kind of single-handedly win a game this year two easy examples. He faltered a bit this year Cal being the easiest example and just didn’t seem to be having that much fun here.

That is 100% fair. To me it felt like there was too many times where he was in the vicinity of making the play but couldn't quite get his hands on it, or come down with it which overshadowed the good.

This is why I think it will be Ohio State. They want a ton of versatile players all over the field (safeties who can cover, play the run, blitz). It's a similar defense to the Vikings now or the Patriots a few years ago. It's not really traditional safety.

I just look at Ohio State and they will losing a top 10 player in the country from this exact position. They have a ton of money and because of the demands of safety play at Ohio State, they will pay more for one (they already have with Downs).

I have no idea what it's about but I think it's impossible to separate playing for the "money" from playing for a "contender". I'm guessing he ends up at Ohio State and plays the position that Caleb Downs is currently playing for them.

He's obviously not going to go somewhere he isn't going to play, so that's a given. But it isn't outlandish to think that he might improve his draft stock ($$) by playing S on what might be the best defense in the country in the biggest games,

We all use this same thread of logic when we discuss why a kid would want to transfer from FCS (Max) or a smaller BCS to play in the Big 10.
I guess I'm not as convinced as everyone else that he can transfer to OSU and start. I think his all B1G picks this year were based off of his Freshman season and reputation. If Ohio State is interested I'm sure he'll get more $ and play for a contender both. Ohio State of course has a talented freshman that could fill Down's spot also so we'll see.

Plus Ryan Day flew to Duluth (at the last second?) to try to flip him. Obviously always wanted him in Columbus.

Agree, it will be Ohio State.

He'll start immediately, he'll make a bag and all the other "perks", and he'll get to prove himself to NFL scouts and coaches against top level comp.

As an aside, Rasheed Hageman came up on my people you may know list in Facebook, my nephew grew up playing on youth teams with him is the reason he appeared I assumed. Out of curiosity I clicked on his profile, one thing that struck me was he had a post that stated if you knew what football does to your body and your mind would you still play the sport. After two years I can't help but wonder if Perich isn't thinking he might as well get as much out of the sport as he can and if the money elsewhere is good enough he might as well jump at it.

I understand your reasoning but this attitude amongst our fan base is why we will never compete at a big level until we put our money where are mouths are. Indiana did and it's paying off.
You're not wrong, but for me, it comes down to principle. I’ve put two kids through the U, and they graduated debt-free. I’m not going to pay for some other guy's kid who’s mostly here to play a game - and, as we're currently seeing, has a high chance of leaving anyway.

I’ll keep watching the Gophers and cheering for them, but if we fall behind because of a lack of NIL money, then so be it. Life goes on. It’s just a sport. I've said on this board several times, at the rate things are going in college athletics, I will eventually walk away and I won't feel bad about it. If I want to watch paid athletes, I'll start watching the Vikings again and let the owners pay their salary.

And, congrats to Indiana...NIL and the transfer portal have clearly worked well for them. If spending big money to build a football team is what matters to their boosters, then that’s their choice. But it's not mine.

Quite rational.

Cooled on Koi halfway threw the season NESTOR is the answer!!!!!
I was beating the drum this year for John Nestor to play safety in 2026 if we could shore up our corner position. He's the same size as Koi and is an excellent tackler. Kerry Brown is excellent at the other spot. If we pick up a good corner in the portal, is this all worth it from a money perspective? Aidan Gousby moves from safety to the other corner spot. He's built more like a corner than safety anyway (thinner and quicker) and would be a very good tackling corner. John Nestor is probably a bargain vs. Koi. Put the savings from safety into a good corner since they are worth more than safeties anyway.

I think this has a lot to do with money. We couldn't offer him the raise he wants based on his play and his position and others can. Plus, he gets to learn from a completely different coaching staff for a year before he goes pro. There is value to that. I can see this being a business decision for both sides.

This is the correct attitude, in my opinion. I share it.

It's a numbers game. This year who were our biggest payouts going to? Probably Smith, Perich and Taylor.

Lindsey was an unknown so not getting nearly as much. Who earned their money this year? Smith and Lindsey. You can bet both got a raise and rightfully so. So Perich and Taylor were likely offered the same amount or slightly less as there is only so much to go around. That's why Taylor hasn't committed either.

Just my speculation.
I agree completely. Safety isn't a premium position unless you're just lights out and Koi wasn't. He wasn't enough of a difference maker on offense to make up the difference. We had other more important places to put the money. Teams only have so much to spend. It's just not the same amount for all teams at this point, more like major league baseball than football. They need to put it in the right places - QB, DE, OL, and because this is college football, running back.

Fuck him anybody that says he wasn't overrated is a clown i hope goes to a big helmet school add plays the same way he did this year the only thing he will get done next year is passing out gatorade

Sorry guys, my fault. I shouldn't have said he had a shitty attitude and considered himself above the team🤣

It sucks, but fuck him and his mercenary ass. I hope he ends up as a backup wherever he lands and the rest of his career is a repeated array of muffled punts at the five yard line and shitty arm tackles.

Ski U Mah, Go Gophers, and Fuck Off Koi Perich. 🫡🖕

I want this energy from roughly 25% of our fan base at all times. Even if this is a white hot take, I would enjoy your company at a game. lol
NIL and the transfer portal killed college football.
It's unwatchable now
The on field product hasn’t changed, and outside of the S-tier programs, there is much more parity. Guess it just depends on how you define watchable.
Koi will get more $ and better coaching at a helmet school. It sucks for fans, but is absolutely the right thing for him. It will benefit his current situation and his future prospects. I simply can’t blame him for leaving.
Time will tell. The U has shown an ability to produce NFL talent

I'd rather have Koi stay for sure, at the same time I was frustrated by some of his play. Couple wrap ups in the Northwestern game rather than throwing a shoulder would have won the game ...

I guarantee both Fleck and Collins would (and may yet still get a chance to say publicly?) that they would love for Koi to stay, and mean it with every fiber of their being.

Wonder if Fleck will be up Durr's ass and demand a public retraction and apology?

He has a lot of talent, but definitely some things to clean up. Will that happen in one year with a new program? I guess we'll see. I will miss his chase down tackles from behind.

ESPN rates him as the seventh best prospect in the portal. The description makes it obvious they are basing this take mostly on his freshman year and hype than recent production.

Most overrated and overhyped player to come to Minnesota. Soft and afraid of contact. Numerous fry jobs I can recall. Good riddens.
