Koi Perich Transfer Portal

Didn't Koi tell us this was a possibility last year? Dude wants to win more than the Quick Lane and Rate Bowls. As much as you'd like to see a guy stay and help elevate a program, the reality is he's only one of 105 and as much as some on here wear maroon and gold glasses, this roster is a very long way from the CFP.
Roster and coaching

I don't know that we could see it coming, but I agree that PJ disrupted the culture of the program to showcase the player. This was previously done (to a lesser extent) with DT, but I'm not remembering many (any?) other examples. If he's headed to a CFP-caliber team, I have a hard time believing he'll get much time at WR and he is definitely not going to return kicks at Miami. Perhaps those were the sort of "bonuses" Minnesota could afford to bridge a financial gap for a period of time.

Regardless, he's a really good player with a high ceiling. Tough to see him go.
I think he ends up at Ohio State and they're usually pretty light at WR, so he might get some run.

The better version of this is to shut down all NIL collectives, across the sport. Make the money come only from House settlement revenue sharing and from bona fide, actual NIL endorsement deals.
Then it just goes back to bag men.

OK, this was a bit unexpected. Could there be a mismatch between perception and reality on both the performance and business sides?

These PFF grades are interesting but I wouldn't rely on them too much. There is a ton of interesting debate (including a rant by some former Gopher TE recruit named JJ Watt) about why it doesn't make sense.

One of the main issues is that it does not really factor in scheme. For example, if a LT locks up an All American DE one-on-one on a 3rd and 12, he gets the same passing grade as the LG who helps double the nose tackle. A win is a win. A loss is a loss.

I agree there needs to be significantly more regulations, but let's not act like parity in college football is not better than ever. 3 teams that have never won an outright championship are in the final 4 this year.

if he goes somewhere else he rides bench(much less playing time, and role)....bookmark this post. Lets bring it back up next year to see the results

I tend to agree, I don't think he goes in the portal if there's a real chance at him coming back. I suppose it could be a last ditch effort to get the money he wants, but considering how popular he was in his time here, face of the program and all of that, even if he comes back that's going to take a hit as well. Koi going to get a lot on the open market, it is what it is. I could see Miami with Heatherman, I could see Ohio State taking another crack at him, he will have his pick of suitors
Honestly, it could be a blessing. I like Koi, I had the opportunity of meeting him and he was very respectful and approachable. The problem I have is that the Coaches treats him like he's a God and IMO they gave him too much power. No one else in that locker room got that type of treatment. I would have an issue with that, if I'm a player on the team. To your point on Hetherman, I believe it's STRONG possible he could reunite with him seeing that he had a lot of success in his system. (I wouldn't blame him)The worst thing that Fleck could have done IMO was not replace Hetherman with someone with proven work as DC. Danny Collins wasn't fully ready to the guy.

It's a numbers game. This year who were our biggest payouts going to? Probably Smith, Perich and Taylor.

Lindsey was an unknown so not getting nearly as much. Who earned their money this year? Smith and Lindsey. You can bet both got a raise and rightfully so. So Perich and Taylor were likely offered the same amount or slightly less as there is only so much to go around. That's why Taylor hasn't committed either.

Just my speculation.
Exactly what I was thinking

Good point. Oregon wasn't that far off, not too long ago, so I would not count them ... but Ole Miss I don't think has ever got this far and obvious IU.

Just don’t end up in IOWA or Wisconsin.

I've heard Wisconsin has money coming in but I doubt he wants to go to a rebuild like that.

No chance Iowa has the money for him. They shop at the bargain rack in the portal. Even if they did Ferentz wouldn't let him play offense.

This sucks. Those that are downplaying saying he didn't have good year, we have guys that are better, LOL.
Come on now. The guy is used all over the field. His athleticm and speed is the best on the defense, possibly the entire team. This is a big loss, wait until he plays in a defense that has a front 7 that can stop someone, then you will see what he can do.
He's likely to go to somewhere he will get paid more. That's likely 99% of what it's about, nothing else. If I had to guess, he came here in the first place because PJ offered him the money and a starting spot right from the jump.

Another huge problem with PFF grades is they don’t know the play call.

RT looks like he missed a block, but it’s actually a TE that missed an assignment. RT thought he had a double team (because he was supposed to) so took leverage like a double. TE goes to second level and gets to a backer…DE makes the tackle.

RT gets a minus
TE gets a plus
But the coaches would grade it the other way around

It will never happen but one way to cut back on transfers and tampering would be to institute transfer fees! Force agents to talk to the team and not just players. You also reward smaller programs for identifying, recruiting, and building up players!

I like it in theory but I don’t know how it moves there. The reason there are transfer fees is because guys are under contract.

Not sure what is stopping NIL programs from offering guys multiple year deals with buyouts.
Well I do know…they don’t want to offer multiple year deals.

PFF was great last year when Koi was the top ranked Gopher on D and an All American. Now it's not great that he's below average. Sure there is subjectivity especially in zone defense coverage, but a missed tackle is a missed tackle.

There was a guy on men's basketball as well, not that long ago? Announced transferring to Cal but then something happened and he came back instead

I don't recall that. Someone else might remember.

I know we had Joshua Ola-Joseph transfer to Cal from here.

We had BJ Omot transfer from Cal to here.

Don't know about anyone who went there and came back.

You'll never catch me saying that I think PFF is great.

As far as missed tackle being a missed tackle, I think you and I disagree on this. Not all missed tackles are the same.
