Kill Presser Notes: Briean Boddy-Calhoun out for the year with a torn ACL & MCL...

and slightly torn PCL.

Here are the quick notes from his press conference:

http://www.gopherhole.com/news_article/show/284008?referrer_id=388419

• We've had a chance to look at Western and start to prepare for them.
• (On if he wants Nelson to slide more when running the ball) We're an option team, that's part of it, you have to protect yourself. You have to play smart, and there will be some games where Phillip may not carry very much, depending on how they play the option. We could have Mitch come in if Phillip is taking a few too many hits. Mitch will have a role as we go on, as we progress as an offense.
• When Nelson hurt his shoulder - thought of putting Mitch in there, if he had been hurt. Your backup QB need to be prepared. I think all 3 of our QB's are ready to play.
• Williams and Cobb played really well. Since I've been here, seeing cuts, pushing the line of scrimmage, running instinctively is as good as we've done as a RB group since I've been here. They did a good job of pass protection, except one time, Rodrick didn't and that cost us a sack in the red zone.
• Trainers said Donnell has done well in his rehab. He's a good kid, and a positive kid.
• Coach Claeys was very upset with the defense because of what happened on the last drive. We had somebody not do his job, he was very verbal at halftime. We've made some mistakes while running option football. I think there's always room for improvement. We have a whole board of things that we need to improve on. We have a lot of guys getting better from week 1 to week 2, but there's a lot of things we need to fix.
• Special teams - did a lot of things well. Had a big return before half. We need Nick Rallis back, hopefully we'll get him back next week.
• The special teams feel pretty good, I don't think our snapper feels that good, but he'll get a workout, he's a veteran, takes great pride in it.
• I think we'll evaluate the WR position in the next two weeks. We have 6-7 people, 2-3 drops, but there's talent. We need to get that figured out.
• CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun is out for the year with a torn ACL.
• As far as the timing of games, I prefer what the fans want.
• It seems like in the Twin Cities, the 11am game is not the most popular, and our night games are a good crowd. I think the Twin Cities likes night games. If I had my choice, I'd let the fans decide. I'd like to see whatever is best for our fans. You need to fight for your time, it doesn't mean you're going to get it, just fight for it. We need to worry about things we can control right now, and that's our football team.
• Harbison is a physical player and playmaker. He got hurt at UNLV, but he has some physical strength, but we need to see that on gameday.
• Part of winning is getting healthy and staying healthy.
• Will Derek play a bigger role this week? He has to. He and Eric Murray both.
• Sid: What's the scoop on your All American punter? Kill: Huh? We recruited an all American kicker.
• North Dakota State can compete with a lot of teams right now, they're a hell of a football team, from the top to the bottom.
• I don't think a Big 10 school gains anything in playing a FCS school, but it's the nature of the game, that's what it's all about. Giving those people opportunities. It's the camaraderie. It's more of a risk, if they can beat you, but it's the good of the game.
• You've got to be prepared for change, I'm older and I've had to learn texting and I don't like texting. The world has change.
• Western Illinois is very similar to Iowa. The crazy thing about coaching is that we all know each other, and we all get each other fired.
• I don't know anything about the scheduling, I have nothing to do with scheduling, take that up with Norwood.
• Alex Keith has a broken bone in part of his hand, he won't practice much, but he can play with it.
• When I came here, all I did was talking about playing 8 home games. That's all I've talked about. I try to have input, but the HC doesn't make the decisions. I don't know if people think I have that much power, they're wrong. All I want is 8 home games. If you do that, you build a fanbase. You want your people to get excited about your program.
• I don't want to be asked anymore about scheduling, because I have no control over it.
• The number one thing that turned around K-State is scheduling. If I got a call, I would have told him, don't schedule NDSU, Craig Bohl is a heck of a football coach.

Ouch. Will he be able to redshirt since he only played in 2 games?

rules are he can't have played n more than 3 games and injury had to be in first half of season so he should be granted

Bad news for BBC. He was playing great. At least Murray and Wells are two quality starters and Shabazz and Baltazar seems like capable depth. The silver lining in this is that he'll have almost a year to recover before next season and he'll have two more years of eligibility still.

Wow...that's horrible. Such a great start for him too. That's gotta be incredibly frustrating for him. This is one position we might be able to take on an injury and be able to survive though, so that's good.

You do go to the silver lining on him though, he should get the waiver, which will be nice to have him around another couple seasons.

Also... "Sid: What's the scoop on your All American punter? Kill: Huh? We recruited an all American kicker. "

LOL

This was my guess from the moment he was being helped off the field. I saw the reports that people were hoping he'd only be out a couple weeks but deep down I was expecting the worst. Perhaps it is because I am a Golden Gopher football fan and expecting the worst usually ends up being the correct call. I hope he gets the additional year of play and I hope it heals up very well and as fast as possible for BBC. Dang... tough situation for the kid.

We got AggieVisioned again....I remember during the broadcast saying they expect to see him back later in the same game. *smh*

I think what they meant to say was that aggievision would be back online later in the game.

Considering it was Aggievision, perhaps they were referring to Philip Nelson being actually within the camera frame during an option run.

I enjoyed Kill's reaction to the North Carolina question. Let it go and stop looking for some headline.

What was up with the multiple NDSU mentions? Is this all in relation to not scheduling FCS teams in the future?

That sucks for BBC. The thread title says ACL and MCL, recap just mentions ACL, not good either way but an even tougher road back if he tore both of them and not just ACL.

Boddy confirmed to Ryan Burns that it's a torn ACL, MCL, and partially torn PCL.

The first NDSU mention was because of an FCS scheduling question, the second time I believe Kill brought them up after talking about his relationship with Bill Snyder at K-State.

I don't get why Kill seems fixated on 8 home games. I believe only 3 teams got 8 home games last year, so it's not going to happen. And like this year when you play an FCS team and 2 teams that, by last year's final Sagarin rankings, are basically equivalent to FCS teams, that will not help you build excitement and attendance in your fan base. So the logic doesn't work out.

LOL

It reminds me of Big Daddy: "Yes, Uncle Remus, I know the catfish are huge. That's terrific."

He should be able to receive a medical waiver for his injury and get an extra year. Once you get to the fourth game is where it gets tricky. My guess is that they will wait until his senior year to get the extra year.

Curious - Why would they do that?

In the current schedule layout the only way you can guarantee 8 home games per year is by only scheduling creampuffs that are looking for a paycheck and don't need a return visit, it is the only way. Kill saying he wants 8 home games per year is the same as saying he only wants to play weak non-conf opponents. Any quality non-conf opponent would require a home/home ala TCU.

Interesting that Kill went out of his way to say he has no control over scheduling.

It's not that difficult. He's trying to build a program that hasn't had much success lately and is in a market fighting for a lot of other options. 8 home games instead of 7 means 8 games the home fans get to attend. It doesn't have jack to do with quality of opponent. It's another home game. Period. Not everyone in the BT is trying to build a program from the bottom up. A few years from now, yes, it's not as big of a deal to only have the 7.

Does anything think Kill maybe meant to say 7 home games? I mean there's no way you can get 8 home games every year. In fact, with the new Big Ten schedule coming out when teams will be playing five conference road games every other year, it is literally impossible...can't do it. Definitely do-able to do 7 home games every year and still get a nice home-and-home with someone on occasion. But, 8 home games every year is quite literally unattainable.

Well, if the goal is to get the $$$ for an 8th home game, then I can see dropping the UNC game for the good of the program. But, to turn around and add a ROAD game where the team apparently had to fly into an airport in Texas and bus to the game in New Mexico seems a bit counterproductive to the goal of adding an 8th home game. I'm just glad that UNC cluster is behind us and somewhat relieved we beat NMSU. If we had lost that one after the dumpster fire of dropping UNC, it could have gotten ugly.

If you read the notes Kill said "when I first got here" he wanted 8 home games a year. Yes, it was possible just as MNVCGUY explained, just schedule 4 home non-conference games against cream puffs and add those to 4 home big ten games. Now that the big ten schedule is changing, I'm sure Kill is quite aware of that and his wish isn't possible anymore.

He's just trying to drive home his point that he has no influence on the schedule other than when he took the job he requested 8 home games a year.

Really stinks about BBC. Luckily maybe Dback and Rback were our deepest position pool going into the season. Still very hard to overcome injuries to the guys who look like they could be outstanding at their position.

The take-away from this presser is this - Kill does his own scheduling to help recruit All-American punters.

He's just trying to drive home his point that he has no influence on the schedule other than when he took the job he requested 8 home games a year.

So, based on Jerry's only request to have 8 home games, his AD paid $800K to get out of the UNC game to schedule another ROAD game?? Makes sense. That kind of makes his boss look bad. Not the nicest thing to do to his boss, given the fact of the matter is his boss took quite a bullet for him in cancelling that UNC series (and we all know Kill wanted it cancelled).
