K. Whaley police report from Scottsdale New Year's Eve

Or was he given two choices.

A Quit and ask for your release
B Get booted

He seems to be learning though. He did after all submit to police commands against the urging of his teammates without having to be tased. That's progress.

I was thinking the same thing. It's just more media friendly for the U of M if they don't have to kick a player off.

On Friday morning, January 1st at about 1:30 am, an SPD officer was flagged down by security of the Afterlife night club located at 4282 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Security reported that they were assaulted by one of the members of a group of males just walking out of the club. The officer was told that the subject, identified as Kevin Whaley, was disturbing females inside of the club and was being escorted out of the club. As Whaley was being escorted out he punched one security guard in the chest and the other in the face. Neither security guard was seriously injured.

As Whaley and his group were walking down the street they were contacted and Whaley was positively identified and arrested. Whaley was booked on counts of Assault and Disorderly Conduct.

Whaley is a player for the Minnesota Golden Gophers college football team.

Would anyone else like to know "his group"?

Whaley aside, if I were a Gopher fan, I'd be concerned about the 'taller' player mentioned in the report. It sounds like he was confrontational to the police, and encouraged Whaley to flee the scene. You sure hope there isn't another future problem on your hands.

Reading the report, it's not hard to imagine the situation turning out much worse if police backup had taken longer to arrive. At least the kids got the message, and complied with the police.

We've had a few of these situations as well, and it always boggles my mind how a kid can make such poor choices when he has the opportunities he has in front of him.

I'd like to think the 'taller' player told him to flee because he knew this would be exactly what happened if Whaley got caught again.

See, now this is the funny light-hearted Schnoodler that I so miss!!!! Welcome back buddy! :)

Next time

the team needs to get on the stinking plane as soon as the game is over.

The Insight Bowl must be thrilled that they don't have to worry about the Gophers playing in their bowl anymore.

Doogie

Do you think this will be it for bad news out of the Gophers trip to the desert or are there more police reports yet to be made public?

Rotundo -- I honestly don't know.

This is seriously just sad, Kevin Whaley really needs to figure his life out. He's f-ed up far too many times for it to be coincidence. Free college to play football and stay out of trouble... what's so hard to figure out in that equation?

This is what's wrong with college football. A University that lauds itself as a premier institution, wants to take only the top 10% of high school grads - and then allows a thug culture on the football team. Whaley should have have never been allowed to enroll at the U after the incident in Virgnia. Brewster isn't the problem - it's Maturi.

At least this frees up another schollie. Whaley was given a chance and he blew it. If he fails in life he'll have nobody to blame but himself.

You hate to see anyone mess up, you know he really didn't want his experience to go the way it did. But as I learned as an employer, most people don't learn until they truly feel the pain of their own actions. Often times the beneficiary of the lesson is not the one who provided it. 2nd and 3rd chances do work but not nearly as effective as firing. The next employer benefits. It's a lesson for Whaley, hopefully he makes good use of it and turns up somewhere else better for it.

As for us, I don't think it will hurt us. The other way you learn is through the mistakes of others. He is now an example of what happens if you squander your second chances and what you have to lose. Plus he isn't significantly better than the other two guys, and more reps for them might even elevate their skills. Plus it's an opp for the new guys. You never want to lose talent, but this is a place where it doesn't hurt so much.

I would think Brewster already has this guy by the balls and the rest of the guys involved in that incident. Any strikes by them and they are on very thin ice.

Doogie busted a nut as he clicked "submit new thread".

After he told Reusse and the Burrito they all probably wanked off. They love bad news for the home teams, except the the Vikes, it it was the Vikes they would hide it as long as they possibly could.

I think Whaley had more arrests then broken tackles.

The release should have said, "Whaley asked for his release but it was not necessary, he was already kicked off the team." That would look much better.

how would that look better?

JTristesse- that was funny. I haven't laughed like that at a comment since GVBadger said that BB grew as a coach and a person.

I think the obviously did the right thing in this case - but I have to ask you - how do you think this won't hurt us? Our running game is marginal, at best, as is...you take out another RB, and I think we need to have a last minute switch and steal a commit from another school...or we may have a worse running game than we had this year. From what I recall - he's our 2nd leading rusher, only behind Bennet by a few yards.

Not to shift this whole subject, but has anyone ever been under the influence of computers when they have been a victim of an assault? I notice that they list alcohol, drugs, and computers on the police report as to whether they were used...full disclosure, I have not...but I know a guy who has...

Your sarcasm is nicely used here Schnoods. "Taze me twice, shame on me" right? Look folks, I never liked this kid on the first place. For those who reject labeling him a thug, thuggish is as thuggish does. This kid's rotten, our University and team are better off without him. I wouldn't want, much less pay to send my kid to school with this guy.

I would be surprised if he's back next year. Sounds like he needed football more than we needed him. He's already been shot and arrest twice in 2 years. When Whaley signed with us I think his mom made a comment to the effect that he needed a change of scenery to help keep him out of trouble. Imagine if this kid went to college around his home?

I believe this incident was mentioned by someone on this board on 1/1. A tip of the cap to them (I forget their name). To the poster with the inside info, feel free to post some positive stuff once in a while and not just people getting arrested or kicked off the team.

That was me. I did not want to name him until it came out, but I thought I had it from a reliable source.
