JUCO LB Cody Poock a Gopher!!!!!

If it was an issue of academics he wouldn't be eligible after just one year at CC. He said in his GH interview that he only had DII offers so he went the JUCO route to build his resume, similar to BBC.

De'Vondre Campbell did something similar as well. Attended Juco for one year to market himself to bigger schools.

That's the crazy part is we're not even looking at any Juco DT's. I can only surmise the staff is comfortable with some combo of Legania/Timms/Hinojosa/Peppers backing up Botticelli/Ekpe?

It's a little worrisome, but they see these guys in practice everyday so if the staff didn't think they were ready I'm sure they would've done something about it. I wouldn't be surprised if Richardson is in the mix as well. He put up some big time stats this year for a big school.

Might have been covered earlier in the thread, but isn't the only way you get to be a JUCO who can transfer after their first JUCO season and have four years to play three is to be a full academic qualifier out of high school?

Cody Poock has signed his transfer papers and is now OFFICIALLY a Gopher. Welcome aboard Poockie!

I'm glad it's official. It looks like he's a good fit for our defensive scheme and has three years of eligibility.

Actually he didn't qualify which is why he stayed at JUCO that. 2nd year and redshirted

I think you are mistaken, ole. gopherprof covered it in post #22 and 50poundhead in post #38.

I guess you could say what you did, if he did attend RCC two years and played only the one year, leaving him 4 for 3 in eligibility.

University of Minnesota head football coach Jerry Kill has announced the signing of Cody Poock to a national letter of intent.

Poock will be transferring to Minnesota from Iowa Western in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and will have three playing seasons of eligibility remaining.

The Okoboji, Iowa, native is a 6-foot 2-inch, 230-pound linebacker who recorded 80 tackles (32 solo) as a freshman for a team that finished the season with an 11-1 mark. He also notched two interceptions (both of which were returned for touchdowns) and forced one fumble as the Reivers recorded five shutouts and allowed their opponents to score an average of only 11.2 points per game.

Poock recorded 8.5 tackles-for-loss and broke up two passes for Iowa Western. He also had one rush on the year, which was a 4-yard gain on a fake punt.

Poock attended Spirit Lake high school in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and helped lead his team to a 15-1 record as a senior. He excelled as a linebacker and running back in high school as Spirit Lake won the Class 2A state title in 2012.

I'm really surprised that Iowa State and Iowa let him get out of there backyard?

I'm glad he is a Gopher and a good tackler but why on earth would Iowa and Iowa State let this kid get out of their backyard. I State especially dropped the ball.
This isn't just an average player either he is pretty good at shedding blocks and making tackles and looks good at getting other people lined up.
He was two way player in high school so he played a lot of minutes and Spirit Lake is right in Iowa States back yard. Coach Miller and Coach K are said to be high on him so the expectations are that he will come in and compete for the MLB spot in Spring practice.
He signed today so that must mean he is a January enrollee.

Nope. he didn't qualify. Remember he got his offer from MN after his first year of JUCO. If he was eligible he would've simply transferred in. However he had to graduate JUCO first which is why he sat and redshirted his 2nd year at JUCO and came here with 3 years to play 3 as he'd used his redshirt. This article is from June 2011. Remember he was a soph here in 2012 and a jr this past year in 2013. Also you can read it from the horses mouth:

Fruechte graduated from Caledonia High School (MN) in 2010 and was set to walk on at Minnesota before failing to qualify academically. He says he has it turned around and should be set to enroll in January.

"I will be enrolling at the end of the fall," Fruechte said. "I was going to be a preferred walk-on out of high school, but I didn't make the ACT scores, so I decided to come to Rochester for a year."

He will be playing Will, not Mike. No one is (legitimately) competing with Damien Wilson for Mike next year.

Correct.

Lynne may 'compete' for the gig but he'll be the backup. Ideal situation to have a younger guy sit, get stronger and play as a RS JR

Your right about next year at Will linebacker.

He will be playing Will, not Mike. No one is (legitimately) competing with Damien Wilson for Mike next year.

Correct.

I don't think he will unseat Wilson at Mlb next year but the year after that, I am betting he Poock slides over to the middle.
He has plenty of size and looks like a heady quick decision maker. He can make the checks and calls to get everyone else set and better yet he sheds blocks correctly.
Wilson can play Will linebacker too so I think there will be some competition in the middle. But yes
Damien Wilson had a very nice Junior year for the Gophers. However they fit in the fall I don't care just as long as we get a good rotation going. Campbell will be on the field, Wipson(really high on this guy) will play a factor in the middle to, and so will Lynn(he is talented kid) so there is a lot of upside at linebacker and I'm even leaving out a couple guys that will help. Rotation looks like it will be six deep. This is a position to be excited about, I bet you coach Miller is because he finally has a large enough group that can play and has depth.

It's a new era of college fb.

Damn near everybody rotates in the front seven now.

Just to beat a dead horse. Poock's natural position is Will. That is where he will play. We have quality depth at Mike. There are no questions about Wilson and Lynn is going to be a stud. May they all stay healthy. There is plenty of quality competition. Our LBs are a strong unit. They have to be to stop the B1G run game.

Little woman saw his pic and said, "he looks like a girl" LOL.
