Exactly. We "invested" in a name coach and a huge salary so we could keep the ocassional top ten recruit at home. Now we have two top tens and a top 30 to go with them. Keeping this talent at home is precisely why we have this coach. For as negative as people are about our chances of landing any or all of them, I keep looking at a record that shows that Tubby has kept every Minnesota recruit he wanted since he arrived. It is a different ball game with higher level recruits, but he has kept the locals home. That should count for something. White was not a recruiting miss. He did it to himself. I would have expected slightly more national recruiting success than we have had, but a good season could turn that around as well.

+1

Tyus in the number 1 player in the nation. Minnesota has never had that. But I agree it would be disheartening to loose both of them. Reid and the next year Illiakanen would be very good consolation prizes though.

If Monson and Clem could keep em why not Tubby?

I'm an El Amin Fan (look at my username), and trust me, Clem didn't keep the kid here. He was the best player of the decade in the state and had one of the most accomplished collegiate careers for any MN kid.

Troy Bell also was not kept here by Clem. He was one of the most decorated college kids in MN basketball history. When is the last time the state produced a major conference POY and 2nd team All-American?? No one since him and I can't recall who before that.

So yes, outside of the two best MN kids in the Clem era, he kept them all. THE EL AMIN FAN.

As far as Monson goes, Cole Aldrich disagrees with you that Monson kept the best kids in state. So does Dahlman who was very highly recruited. And Jon Leuer. And Jordan Taylor. THE EL AMIN FAN.

Don't forget about Reid's teammate, Johnson and Coffey in 2016. Wasn't El Amin going to come here, but didn't he get into some legal troubles? Seeme like he could've stepped right in when Bobby Jackson left.

I recall hearing that El Amin got into a brawl with Russ Archambaeu (sp) which supposedly put a wrench into the Gophers' recruitment of him.

Rush punched him out and he wanted no part of MN after it. We got Russ and UConn got El Amin. We all know how that turned out.

If I were to bet, Vaughn will commit before Tyus, and it likely will not be here. I just get that stinking suspicion he does not like being the lil brother of Tyus Jones and wants to prove himself elsewhere. If he committed early and went to U of M there is the chance that Tyus could over shadow him.

I see him in a Baylor or Kansas Uniform

Next best scenario is we get Tyus and Travis next year but I just feel its a bit more likely to get Travis only.

~disclaimer~ this is strictly a guess based off of what I've seen in video/reports on Vaughn and on how I think I would feel if I was him.

That said... I hope that Mr Vaughn can rise above his possible personal wants and realizes he can have a greater impact and tell a much grander story about taking his local school to the big stage a la the "Flint Stones" from Michigan State that had 3 guys from the same town and won a NC. Winning at Kansas is not nearly as much of an achievement.

I see him in a Robbinsdale Cooper jersey next year, and then hopefully a Gophers jersey the following year.

clem made the mistake of not offering troy. el amin duked it out with Russ . Clem was a very good recruiter.

Hmm. I thought winning more basketball games was precisely why we have this coach. If the U bought Tubby's services with the understanding that he is a great recruiter, they made a bad purchase based on bad information. He has never been a great recruiter. He got a few McD's All-Americans at Kentucky, because everyone at Kentucky gets McD's All-Americans. Despite not being a great recruiter, he has won a ton of basketball games, is winning them still, and will continue to win until he retires. The sun will still rise the next day even if zero of these recruits sign with the U, which is a very real possibility despite what some may want to believe.

I would make Vaughn my priority number 1. Then Travis number 2.

The following year Ellenson and Illikainen. Tough team.

You are right, Bell wanted to come to U and Clem cancelled a home visit with Troy. Not sure why Clem was so unsure on him. El Amin had verbally committed to U before Russ punched him out. Russ was a thug and cost the U plenty.

I wonder how many players who have a team like Kentucky, Duke, or Kansas in their final 3 acutally pick the local school? I remember Oregon having both Kevin Love and Kyle Singler in the same class and both chose elsewhere.

Kris Humphries picked us over Duke and many big programs
Richert picked the U over Arizona who was one of the top programs around at the time

I've said this before:

Priority A)Vaughn - Hard to find a more athletic 2 or 3 who can create his own shots and actually make them.

B)Travis - Could be a nice 3 or spell the 4 spot. Not crazy about the football stuff.

C)Find a JUCO, pass-first PG who can really dish.

D)Jones - Would be nice but don't coddle this kid... something tells me he's had his ass kissed for too long by too many and he won't have the toughness and determination to improve once he gets to school. I think he'll be a bust. He's going to be the Freddie Adu of Hoops.

Bell was a big miss for Clem. But El Amin, IMO, was his biggest miss while he was here. Hindsight is 20/20 and although he was a great HS player, you could argue he was a better college player than anyone thought. He would have been a big time program changer for Clem, although I guess he would have gotten all his teams wiped out anyway with the cheating scandal.

This is hilarious. Thanks for that.

You're way off on Jones. Not even close, kids a gym rat with high BB IQ.

Freddie Adu was the next Pele.

Vanila Ice the next Elvis.

I dont see the athleticism, explosiveness OR Shooting Acumen to ever be a great player.

That's not what you said. You pulled a bunch of smoke out of your ass about him being coddled and not determined to be improve. Total ignorant BS if you have followed the kid at all.

If he's such a hard worker than why is still struggling to make shots in a pedestrian level???

Lol.

Jones averaged 28.1 points, 8.0 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game this past season, leading the Eagles (23-6) to the Class 4A sectional finals. Jones shot 55.6 percent from the field, 44.0 percent from 3-point range and 86.6 percent from the free throw line.

Academic excellence: Jones has maintained a 3.05 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: In addition to donating his time as a youth basketball instructor, he has volunteered locally on behalf of Feed My Starving Children and as a motivational speaker for elementary school children.

Sounds like a kid who has been coddled, doesn't work hard, and can't shoot to me.

I've heard reports that he's struggling to shoot the 3 this year...I'd like to see his real stats for this season....also, who does Apple Valley play? I've heard they play in a weak league.

So in other words you have no idea what his shooting percentage is, you have no idea what type of character or work ethic he has, but you think he is going to be a bust and won't improve because someone told you he is struggling to shoot the 3 this year?

He shot 44 percent from range last year and 86.6 percent from the line over the entire season all while setting assist records.

Jones is a pretty good shooter, shot around 50%, I believe, at the Peach Jam from 3. Jones could be struggling because after the Peach Jam he had surgery on his shooting hand? It could have been finger but am not 100% sure.

Agreed on this. Tubby & Kill are very similar philosophically, where they recruit to their system, have pre-determined roles they look to fill & sell themselves to the parents as much as the kids. Tubby's not the guy to hang with the AAU coaches & Tweet to the kids. Generally, he'd rather bring in a kid that he likes & develop him for 4-5 years, than deal with the BS of one 'n' done type players/system.
