Somebody dig up the stats and not the "legend" crap that often comes out.

No, because I based that on what I feel WILL happen in the future...Freddie Adu had numerous commercials touting his work ethic too. He even had a Siera Mist commercial with Pele when he was 15. Look at him now? Slammed by his MLS coaches for lack of work ethic? Why? Because he was coddled from the age of 12 on....that's the basis for my fears on Jones...Also don't think he has the natural athleticism to overcome his lack of a shot. Most Div 1 guards light it up in HS...I've seen video of this kid shooting...I just don't see his game translating from a poor HS level to top notch college level.

And Vaughn wasn't coddled?

Or any top 10 HS player? Lebron James? Kobe Bryant? Carmelo Anthony?

Ok man you got me there, I can't refute the Freddie Adu defense.

He shot 44% from 3pt as a sophomore and he is a 86% FT shooter. But someone told you he has struggled early this year shooting with a broken hand so he must be lazy.

"My family raised me to make sure I am humble and grounded and not getting big-headed," Jones said. "I stay motivated because I want to get to that next level, Division I basketball."

"He has a great family structure," Howard Pulley Panthers coach Antwan Harris Sr. said. "The pressure comes from within, from trying to be great and working to be great. He works hard every single day. There is no external pressure greater than what he gives himself."

I've said this before:

Priority A)Vaughn - Hard to find a more athletic 2 or 3 who can create his own shots and actually make them.

B)Travis - Could be a nice 3 or spell the 4 spot. Not crazy about the football stuff.

C)Find a JUCO, pass-first PG who can really dish.

D)Jones - Would be nice but don't coddle this kid... something tells me he's had his ass kissed for too long by too many and he won't have the toughness and determination to improve once he gets to school. I think he'll be a bust. He's going to be the Freddie Adu of Hoops.

Tyus doesn't need to improve at all to be a great college point guard. If you want to say he might be a bust in the NBA that's a different discussion, but if you think he will be a bust in college that is nothing short of hilarious.

tyus = Phil Pressey from Missou.. same size, skills, etc did you see him carve up UCLA last week?... not off the charts athlete.. but great feel for game, hits 3's when needed, sees the floor.

tyus = PP2.

Freddie Adu was the next Pele.

Vanila Ice the next Elvis.

I dont see the athleticism, explosiveness OR Shooting Acumen to ever be a great player.

see: john stockton, phil pressey, steve nash, jason kidd, et al.

Remember how excited the Twin Cities was when Parise and Suter signed with the Wild? If all these kids committed to the Gophers, I think the excitement would exceed that.

Seriously? You can't refute that "defense"? That Freddie Adu analogy is a horrible argument. It's merely an example of a prodigy who didn't pan out. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that most #1 one recruits are pretty good college bball players... Moses has dug himself a hole on this thread.

I was making the exact same comparison in my head. Doing the unthinkable, with doubt that they would seriously consider us, and the end up choosing Minnesota because they want to team up and play for their home state. Imagine the buzz if they all committed!

I think your spot on. Obviously you always want the best players to come to your school but it'd be even more special if they all played for the U. Would be tough to get a ticket though.

While Tyus isn't the most impressive shooter I've ever seen, he finds ways to score PLENTY, and his bread and butter is passing and being a fast break wizard. He isn't #1 in the country just for no reason.

I wonder how many Div 1 foes Jones faces in the Suburban-Whatever Conference he plays in....I've lost track and moved away 25 years ago. But I know that Apple Valley plays the likes of Rosemount, Eagan and the Bloomington Schools....What's his competition like (besides this special game on Saturday)?

How many head to head matchups in his conference with Div 1 caliber guards?

What's your point? He plays elite competition in the summer and dominates bigger, stronger, and faster players. It's really weird that you have your mind set on him being a bust simply because someone who plays a completely different sport didn't pan out. Flawless logic.

its only special because number 1player in state is playing number 2 in the state, but other than that its not special, Cooper is not a very good team, Apple Valley have played better teams already and will player better teams later in the season. De Laselle is the best team in the state in my opinion followed by park center and apple valley. I expect a Apple Valley win, and will be shocked otherwise

Are there any links to HS Basketball stats that are reliable and not just homer-job'd stats by some geek with braces?

No. Stats are primarily taken by people with braces, therefore rendering them useless.

Has he had any valid points in this entire thread? The "who does he play against?" take is the best. I suppose he's only ranked number 1 based off his stats against crappy high school competition. Does he even play against anyone good in AAU or international competitions? He'll probably be a bust because he's been hyped like Freddy Adu and Freddy hasn't turned out to be the next Pele.

But the only reason he won these awards was due to the fact that he plays poor competition...my bad

Weak league? It's 5:00 in the morning and I just about fell out of bed after reading that statement. Dude you have no idea what you are talking about. Last year Lakeville North lost in the state championship by two points to Osseo and were 30-2. Eastview was 28-2 losing only to Lakeville North (LN and Eastview split in during the season) and in overtime in the state tournament. Up until two years ago Chaska and Eden Prairie both were in the conference and were excellent teams. Chaska had two kids play D1 basketball...Jake White and another kid who I can't remember his name. Two years ago Lakeville South had an excellent team (they lost a close game at the state tournament to EP, had a kid named Richter who was first team All-State and several other very good players), Apple Valley was pretty good and had a kid named Schalk who is playing D1 someplace, Eastview was excellent with a kid named Joey King who is playing at Drake and Eagan won the conference with a bunch of great athletes. Oh yeah...the Gophers are supposedly looking at the kid who used to play at Kennedy. It is probably the best conference in the state (I don't consider the Lake a real conference with 5 teams and 8 conference games). The reason Tyus has never made it to state because his section has been loaded. I saw them lose twice at St. Olaf to Eastview and Lakeville South and last year at Burnsville to Eastview. All SSC teams by the way.

Last year Apple Valley's 6 loses were all to LN (twice), EV (3 times) and EP (once). Last year LN and EV both would have played with any team in the state. I've watched the old Lake/SSC quite a bit the last five years, and year in and year out it is deep and good. Twenty-five years ago when you moved away, maybe those teams weren't very good, but that isn't the case now.

If he's such a hard worker than why is still struggling to make shots in a pedestrian level???

Love your work ethic as well, Moses: Can somebody else please dig up the stats? I forget who else is in Apple Valley's conference.

Maybe if you had braces you wouldn't be on the mat right now.

I have never seen Tyus plan, and I would love for him to play for the best University in the country, in the best venue in the country, and wear the best looking uniform in the country. Getting all four of these guys would energize the Minnesota sports community to a whole new level. Tubby could ride off into the sunset in 6 years as my favorite Gopher coach of all time.

I'm 1800 miles away and don't have access to the myriad of newspapers and data that people in the Twin Cities do....

Sounds like Tyus will be back on the court tonight. Great news, was worried he wouldn't play tomorrow at the Target Center vs. Vaughn. Great chance to see these future teammates in action.

You have an internet connection (unfortunately).... Do you think people sift through piles of newspapers to combine real time stats? You just keep digging yourself in a hole.

So again you're pleading complete ignorance about his actual shooting skills and throwing out a full season's statistics from last year because someone told you he is struggling shooting this year after injury. Just admit you had no idea what kind of work ethic Tyus has, what his family life is like, and comparing his potential success to a soccer player that was last relevant 10 years ago is your only reasoning behind thinking Tyus Jones will be a bust.

I've heard reports that he's struggling to shoot the 3 this year...I'd like to see his real stats for this season....also, who does Apple Valley play? I've heard they play in a weak league.

Aside from his own team, there are two other South Suburban teams currently in the top 10. Plus, in December Apple Valley played four other top 10 teams -- Park Center, Minnetonka, Osseo and Hopkins. And they play Cooper tomorrow.

It's time to cut your losses.

But Freddie Adu played major competition too on the junior national team and look at how he turned out!
