Joey Brackets' latest Bracketology

Gophers drop to first 4 out

Dayton, Georgetown, Minnesota, and Richmond now Lunardi's first 4 out.

A little surprised that Lunardi lists the Gophers as the first team out on his s-curve not so much because I think the Gophers are that deserving of being in the tournament right now but more because he has teams like BYU, Providence, St.Johns, Missouri, SMU, St.Joes, Baylor, Xavier, and Tennessee all in right now and I guess that really shows just how weak the bubble is.

Palm also has the Gophers in the first 4 out in his update this morning, biggest surprise in his is to see he has Oregon in and as a #10 seed.

Disappointing, but not unexpected. A win over Iowa puts us back in, temporarily at least.

That looks like a favorable bracket to me.

Thought the same thing but there is alot still to play for. Has anyone seen St. Louis this season? They must be pretty good to get a 4 seed but don't they play in the AAC or the A-10?

A-10. 25-2 with losses to Wiscy and Witchita. They are legit.

Edit: and like clockwork, SLU gets beat at home by Duquesne.

I wish we were a couple spots higher. As it is, it seems like we will fall back to First Four Out with a loss on Saturday. It seems like the OSU loss moved us just as far as the Iowa win did.

I had a dream last night that we beat Michigan. It was a good dream.

At this point it looks like bubblers are losing every night- just like we do. I would have to think that winning two of our next three games would at least hold our position and get us in. Maybe 1 of 3 works if we beat Michigan (miraculously)?

I have been doubtful about 8-10 for a few weeks but now- I have to admit 8-10 with one BTT win looks pretty good.

That was actually what I was initially thinking. The bubble is weak as hell. Hopefully we get two more wins period, then I think we are a lock.

Sounds like Lunardi thinks we only need 1 more win. Not sure if I buy that or not.

David (Minnesota)

If the Gophers beat Michigan Saturday, are they a lock? Or how many game do they need to win in the B10 tourney?

Joe Lunardi (2:34 PM)

Another win at any point would lock it up.

If that were true, we would be further from the bubble now, IMO. The Illinois game aside, I would assume most folks figure we can beat PSU. I think it takes one win beyond that.

Interesting, in an article he posted about 4 hours ago he says this:

"The Golden Gophers (18-11, RPI 43, SOS 4) stayed alive by outlasting Iowa on Tuesday and are the only team in the Big Ten with just two league games remaining. The first is at Michigan and could be the one to put Minnesota over the top.

What they need: Two more wins over teams ahead of them in the standings, Big Ten tournament included."

Which makes no sense cause that would essentially mean we'd have to get to the BT finals to make that happen, and I just can't see that being necessary. Me thinks he's a bit confused.

Looks like Lunardi got confused, combined the 2 questions. Pretty sure he's saying if the Gophers beat Michigan, they would need only one more win to lock it up. There's no way on God's green earth he thinks the Gophers get in simply by beating Penn State.

This bracket is literally a gift from God himself. If only it were a reality.

UCLA, Saint Louis, Wichita State, Michigan if all teams win that are supposed to. Sounds like a recipe for a cinderella run to me.

That doesn't seem right. So if we lose to Michigan, we have to win 3 games in the BTT?

I would agree with that. If the Gophers win 2 more games, they should be in regardless of who those wins are against. The Gophers have at least 3 good wins (maybe 4 if Richmond qualifies), that should be enough in this day and age when the overall record looks good enough. One more win and it's a close call.

FSU could sneak back into the top 50

And Florida State (#55) has a legit chance to get back into the top 50 before the ACC Tournament. Remaining games are Georgia Tech, @ Boston College, and Syracuse (in Tallahassee). I think the odds are better that Florida State ends up in the top 50 than Richmond. A win over Syracuse would do wonders for the 'Noles RPI, so long as they don't slip up in the previous two.

I don't agree with this at all, I think the Gophers would be pretty safe if they can pick up 2 more wins regardless of who it comes against and also think a win @Michigan could pretty much lock it up.

My thoughts as well on what we need to do to get in. I think Lunardi tends to care too much about conference record. In his chat today he mentioned he thinks teams should have to be a least .500 in their conference to make the NCAA, so maybe he's a little biased toward that. I realize he is still very accurate though.

Not many teams play half their conference games against top 25 ranked teams (and a third of their games against ranked opponents)
Fortunately for us, seems the selection committee gets this

Hate to think we might be a missed layin at the end of regulation in one game from getting selected

Here's hoping for no surprises in the upcoming conference tournaments

I have noticed this too and he kind of seems to contradict himself sometimes. People try to say all the time about the strength of their conference and what conference they play in and he will say the committee doesn't care about conference affiliation and looks at each team individually and if that is the case than I really don't believe conference record should be all that important when looking at a teams resume.

Bottom line: If the Gophers beat Michigan and PSU they are in. They still have the opportunity to control their own destiny. They put themselves in this position by blowing potential victories vs. Illinois and Northwestern at home and losing at Purdue and MSU on the road in overtime. Had they won any of those four we would be safe in my opinion if they lost @ Michigan. Its time to take care of business.

What if Iowa loses 2 of 3, and then goes one and done in the NTT. They would be 20-12 (9-10), be in a severe slump, and have just one or two impressive wins. Are they still in the tourney?
