Good point. The emergence of these 3 bolded definitely have some impact, with SMU being the most important being they're in the same market.

I don't know if they were ever much of an air raid offense. They've always ran the ball quite a bit. IMO, it's in their offense, their QBs need to be really good throwers and really good runners (and also not get injured doing it). So yeah, they work out well when you have uniquely talented QBs like Boykin.

TCU wanted Patterson to step down at the end of the year and transition to another role in the department. He wanted to do transition now and let Jer take over for the rest of the year. Doesn't sound like he's undercutting Patterson at all.

If I'm Nebraska, I throw a huge number at Matt Campbell. With Iowa in flux, getting to be in the Big 10 without competing with Penn State, Michiga, OSU, every year. He'll likely still say no.

Then I'd hire the Coastal Carolina guy (Chadwell?).

Exactly. It'd also be good for the players for Jer to stick around. There are seniors on the team that would probably like to play it out. Additionally, TCU made Gary Patterson a really rich man. Getting fired is part of the job.

I guess the AD went to him before the season and told him that there needed to be some changes... and things didn't change. Seems that ol' Gary is another curmudgeon who loathes the transfer portal and NIL. He was also complaining about how other schools were using NIL to steal his recruits. Could very well be that the AD decided that the college football world had passed him by...

No one disputes any of this. Most negative feelings towards Kill are all due to the way he attacked Fleck and brought his ex-wife into the attacks. It was an extremely low blow and seemingly everything Jerry appeared to not stand for.

Recruiting matters. A lot. The old Bum Phillips quote "Bryant can take his'n and beat your'n, and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n" isn't true for modern NCAA football.

whether jer’ got intentionally hit by a flying helmet by a smu player or if he just accidentally tripped by a tcu player, jer’ is always impacting the boys. this isn’t about him at all, it’s all about the boys.

That and his general inability to just shut up about MN if he has nothing nice to say. If he didn't burn his bridge here, he at least poked holes in it.

This is it for me. Jerry Kill became a really wealthy man because of the U and I do understand why he didn't love the way it ended, but he should have taken the high road. He took the low road. . . over and over.
 

TCU is an odd job. In an alternate universe, TCU is 8-0 in the mountain west and rated number 7 right now while having way less money.

Jerry did a great job bringing MN back to a respectable program.

Jerry had his limits and his unwillingness to make changes offensively made this system plateau probably about what we saw, and Outback Bowl loss, at best. That could be frustrating.

Jerry left and everyone understood why ... and then he didn't come back... at all ... except to sell his book, and then he left again...

Whatever connection to the fans or school there was, it wasn't there for him, hard not to feel the same way after that.

His comments about PJ and his ex wife were childish and terrible.

None of these things mutually exclusive.... it's life, it's a mixed bag.

Yep. He did a good job when he came here. But ... "Jerry Kill on @1500ESPN said he, "will not ever" step foot back on the University of Minnesota campus." Can see why he would be pissed about Claeys, but it wasn't about that. It was about not getting a job he thought he was entitled to. Then he didn't just shut up; he went after P.J. Not a good look for a supposedly honest, practical, no-nonsense guy.
