You are basing your stats on games versus Wofford, Lehigh, Coastal Carolina as opposed to an entire season of games playing in the Big Ten.

I am writing what I see. Often I feel like Ricky Jr is collecting millions to sit and watch open gym. I prefer a team concept. I think teams should look for ways they have an advantage. Jimmy Dykes was right today. The advantage they had today against Chaminade was inside. They should have pounded it in. I thought Pitino showed his youth and inexperience over this tournament; starting with the decision to only play 7 in the opening game of a a three day, three game tournament and ending with not exploiting Chaminade's weaknesses defensively. He has a lot to learn.

You're under the impression I didn't include totals from Syracuse and Arkansas?

Folks, careful here. Pitino is still learning his players and honestly is a little green around the gills. However, the Gophers played the Orange tight and could have won had Dre been on. Also
he does not have anyone athletic at the 4 which will be exploited all year. There will be growing pains for all involved. As I have said we need to look at 2015 as the breakout season.
He needs to recruit a true 5 and a very athletic and physical 4 in order to fully implement his system. Sit back and enjoy the ride and watch a young coach sometime grow into the position. The other alternative was to watch an old coach content with mediocrity. I prefer a young and hungry (albeit green at times) to the old and weary...

The national media all has the same question. Did Minnesota fire a coach who got them to respectability, hoping for more? Is the younger Pitino ready for big time coaching? Can a run and gun system, successful in the sec, big east, big 12, succeed in the physical big ten? Will the Mn fan base realize the gophers were losing 1 all conf player and 1 other solid player in the frontcourt without much left behind to replace them? These questions are still all valid to me; the big ten hasnt started and it is just year 1.

I think Louisville beating Michigan in the national championship proves it can work in this conference. Just need the right players. Going to need to give him a few recruiting classes.

It doesn't matter what system you run, what matters is the combination of overall talent and do they fit what you're trying to do. Pitino ball, Bo Ryan ball, 40 minutes of hell, havoc, they all can work in any conference, as long as you have the right horses

Grinnell's "Run-n-Gun" disagrees with you.

But i agree with the rest of your post, just being a smarty pants.

If people legitimately wonder whether a Run N Gun system can work in the Big Ten, then those people aren't very bright. The answer is a resounding yes as long as you have the players and you execute.

This team would have the same weaknesses no matter who the coach was. I truly believe Norwood knew that if he didn't fire Smith after last season, he was going to have to fire him after this season because there was going to be a big dropoff due to the graduations and resulting paper thin frontcourt. Pitino just about pulled the fat out of the fire by almost getting Buckles, and he lucked out by snagging King, but this was going to be a down season regardless.

Firing Tubby-- last season, looked dumb to the national media, because we beat # Indiana, made the tourney, and even won a game. But a good number of followers could see the writing on the wall regardless of a successful year.

No, it looked dumb to the national media because it was the great HOF coach Tubby Smith.

"Who does Minnesota think they are?" WTF

+3

Recruiting losses of Schilling, Hayes, Vitto Brown, et all when combined with average recruiting the previous couple of years the future did not look bright, last year was an up year and there may not have been another uptick under Tubby.

Without a PF this year is going to be tough, losing on Travis may make next year tough also, could be a bit of a rebuilding process.

Souhan in the ST makes some great points about this guys differences vs Tubby It is great to have a coach who can actually make some adjustments and prepare. The gophers wlil still struggle at times against some of the Elites in the B1G but it is refreshing to know we have a coach who finally gets it.

But this thread isn't about bashing Tubby.

Whether you like it or not, any thread regarding Pitino will bring up comparisons with the former coach. Comparing the past with the present is extremely healthy. Now, people can do it without making it personal, but this will continue for years.

You're going to have to get used to it.

Yeah. Plus, Tubby led us to a 9th place finish last year. So, there's that.

It's no different than comparing Obama to Bush, Johnson to Kennedy, Roosevelt to Hoover, Jefferson to Adams, this guy to that guy. If people want to bash, they should be allowed to bash within reason. The attempted censorship on this board has got to go.

Comparing people requires a great deal of tautological rhetoric in order to even remotely be interesting. It is also asking everyone to become stupid. This is like movies that require you to make gigantic leaps of faith in order to enjoy the final scenes in the movie. We do it to be entertained by their fallacies. We don't do it to become more informed. So, we compare Tubby to Pitino to allow ourselves to be entertained by fallacies. Got it.

Hey Dude, it's human nature to compare, to speculate, to look for differences. The reality is, Tubby would have lost to FSU and probably been blown out by Syracuse. It is refreshing to see a coach with a plan. As we watch this team develop, some of us will be wondering what might have been if Tubby had been at the helm. It is human nature. Looking at the past and comparing it to the present and future does help us be more informed. It helps us gain perspective and provides a greater appreciation for the current coach we have. Do you ever wonder what might have been had Rodney actually played for Pitino? He may have reached his NBA Lottery potential. Moving ahead, we will see greater differences vs Tubby as the likes of Mo Walker, Otto, and Joey develop and become the best they can be under Pitino.
