Hey Dude, it's human nature to compare, to speculate, to look for differences. The reality is, Tubby would have lost to FSU and probably been blown out by Syracuse. It is refreshing to see a coach with a plan. As we watch this team develop, some of us will be wondering what might have been if Tubby had been at the helm. It is human nature. Looking at the past and comparing it to the present and future does help us be more informed. It helps us gain perspective and provides a greater appreciation for the current coach we have. Do you ever wonder what might have been had Rodney actually played for Pitino? He may have reached his NBA Lottery potential. Moving ahead, we will see greater differences vs Tubby as the likes of Mo Walker, Otto, and Joey develop and become the best they can be under Pitino.

I don't wonder Rodney playing for Pitino because he doesn't have any eligibility. Joey wouldn't be here if Tubby was the coach, so I don't see why you would bring him up?

Hey dude, why don't you focus on the content instead of name calling and your pious attitude is typical of a troll.....please find yourself a home on the Bring back Tubby Smith blog

Pot meet kettle, my that's a very nice shade of black you've got on.

I think we are now to the point where we can expect to see a Sid column heading: Gophers Like Pitino.

Comparing people requires a great deal of tautological rhetoric in order to even remotely be interesting. It is also asking everyone to become stupid. This is like movies that require you to make gigantic leaps of faith in order to enjoy the final scenes in the movie. We do it to be entertained by their fallacies. We don't do it to become more informed. So, we compare Tubby to Pitino to allow ourselves to be entertained by fallacies. Got it.

Continue.

No. Humans are inextricably linked to the past. It's not possible for people to live in the present and plan for the future while simultaneously divesting themselves of the past. It's not how the brain works. You make decisions based on experiences from your past so frequently that you're not even aware you do it most of the time.

It's only natural to compare the current coach with the past coach. Many people see the past coach as either a failure or someone who didn't live up to expectations. Thus, people will project the hope and expectations onto the new coach. Pointing out the shortcomings of the prior coach is part of that equation.

About the only thing we have to compare Smith and Pitino are the players that played for both.

“Coach gives us a lot of freedom,” center Elliott Eliason said. “He doesn’t even want us to look at him on the bench. He wants DeAndre or Andre to run the show the whole time. He wants us to play that up-tempo style of offense, so he doesn’t want us focusing on him when we should be playing.”

I've read other comments similar to this from Andre and Austin Hollins. The kids feel like they have been unleashed and trusted by the coaches, which I interpret to mean that Smith had a much tighter reign and control over what the kids could do. It seems that the kids who played under both systems feel refreshed in what they are able to do now as opposed to last year. In the end, I think we just have to acknowledge that the two coaches are vastly different in how they approach working with their players.

This has never been funny or clever, so I'm not sure why you continue to do it.

I personally enjoy it; whoop de dam doo, we got a higher seed in the Big Ten tournament because of tiebreakers. Doesn't negate the overall point

I agree. So when people stand up for Tubby, people telling them to shut up has got to go, right?

one would at least need to question their motives or whether they actually observed the team chemistry.

Which fallacies exactly?

Neither has the last year was the Gophers' best season in 23 years spiel you pull all of the time, so I'm not sure why you continue to do it.

Here here!

Don Dpod cannot take his own medicine.

Probably because it's funny/sad how much it bothers you. How does it feel to be the new FOT?

Yesterday evening on 1500, Mackey gave his list of 6. This time it was the 6 things he likes about Richard P. Because it's hard to flesh it out without comparing, there was quite a bit of Tubby bashing in that segment. The whole time I was thinking how big dpo's job is going to be if he's serious about policing society and shaming everyone into refraining from Tubby bashing. World peace is probably a more realistic pursuit.

Because that statement is factual. Jake's isn't.

Only Gophers fans would want to make last year's results appear worse than they are ("9th place finish durr hurr", "only beat UCLA because they weren't trying") because they hate the coach so much that they don't want to give him credit for anything.

It's "hear, hear", genius.

Speaking of things that are neither funny nor clever...

It's not "my own medicine". That doesn't make any sense. Jake is purposely, knowingly and continuously pushing false information for his own amusement. In order for it to be "my own medicine", I too would have to be purposely, knowingly and continuously pushing false information. Please cite where and when I have ever done that, even once, on this board.

Way to pay attention. We actually got a lower seed (9th), but did not finish 9th in the conference standings. There is no "overall point" other than to be a total penis because Tubby is obviously more hateworthy and evil than bin Laden.

Tubby's teams were actually very good during the non-conference games, especially the tourney's. I think Tubby would have had more success in Maui than this years team did. With that said...Tubby's team would have folded during the Big Ten, especially at the end of the season. He absolutely had to go if the program was to get over the middle hump they were stuck behind.

Tubby won in Tallahassee last season.

Was the performance/success of Tubby's teams during the nonconference season ever an issue? February frequently was an issue, yes, but I can't fathom how anyone could be unhappy with how the Gophers performed under Tubby vs. quality nonconference opponents.

Nice catch. I indeed got that one wrong.

Poor Don Dpod, you're just too darn proud to ever admit you make mistakes.

For a guy who claims he doesn't care what people think, you sure take things personally. You exposed your insecurities once again. You're overcompensating for something, what is it?

I agree it's kinda weak the way some apologize for this win by saying that UCLA just wasn't that good, or they had an injured player. They won their conference outright, and their 2012 recruiting class included the #2, #5, and #26 recruits according to ESPN, one of whom was a first round NBA draft pick. Oh yeah, and we won by 20 points, so it's not like we just scraped by or anything.

Looking at our 2010-11 season, during which we went 6-12 in conference, all of our Big Ten losses were by fewer than 20 points, hell 10 of those 12 losses were by single digits, and we were down THREE players for most of those games, so using the same logic that we only beat UCLA because of an injury, I think it's fair to say we would have gone 18-0 in the Big Ten that year with a full roster.

Wrong. Point one out and I'll admit to it. I'll be waiting.

Wrong again. I care about the truth and people lying to push their agendas. How is that "personal"? The truth doesn't pick sides.

I see you continue to attempt to make this about me (and your obsession with me) rather than dealing with the debate. I would make every attempt at ad hominem as well, were I on the losing side.

The problem was not identified correctly. The switch was made because, with Tubby's very best squad we were unable to crack .500 in the Big Ten as per every year prior. That in addition to the fact that Tubby had a mediocre incoming group of recruits lined up, and that the team would be worse this year, and that the fans had had it with perceived unispired coaching was enough.

Aren't the rankings of those three recruits irrelevant once they step on the court as freshmen? #5 had a decent rookie year, while #26 averaged 6.3 minutes per game.
