How good is Trevor?

...you have to start developing a concept of what is a good shot and what isn't in these games so when it matters, you are ready.

I really hope Rodney develops in the NBA lottery pick that many on this site and some analysts say he will; he has the potential to do it IMO. However, in just watching last night's game, I saw nothing in his 26 minutes of play that looked different to the weaker, typical-freshman type year he had last year. I know it's one game, but I was hoping to see an improvement, albeit however slight, in either his shot form, ability to get to the hoop off the bounce, defensive rebounding, understanding of spacing, etc. and I just didn't. Let's go Rodney, we need you this year!

Boy this is 'right there' for me also. In addition to the familiarity w/ Colt and III's game (not much improvement from last season) I was disappointed to see how little Rodney appeared to change his game.

It's only one game and the first one as a squad. They looked rusty so lets just hope that play improves from here. Mo (a double/double) and Hollins were very pleasant surprises.

Trevor Mbakwe is so big and powerful he has little Trevors orbiting around him.

What's the general concensus.

Is everyone of the opinion that Trevor's gone after this year? I've said it before... I think he has a shot at being a lottery pick.... no joke.

Not without some form of an offensive game that doesn't revolve around putbacks.

Love his game, he's dominating out there. But the superior athleticism that he has won't be superior in the NBA, especially as he's undersized. He could use every day of college to develop ball-handling, footwork, and post-moves.

That said, I could see him being a first-rounder.. but not after this year, unless something changes.

That's not my opinion, JD said it, he is a great college player right now with his strength, athleticism, and energy, and those characteristics give him a chance to go to the next level but he needs to develop his offensive game to be a factor in the league.

Good call on Courtney James. If Trevor turns out to be another Courtney (minus the phonebook & the "A" grade on his PMS paper courtesy of Jan Gangelhoff), I will be more than pleased. We haven't had a power forward of his ilk (Big Ten body, strong, good hands, crashes the boards, does grunt work without having to be "the man") since his departure.

He is way better than James, IMO...

He may be gone, but I can't believe it will be to the NBA. Too small to play Power forward, too poor a shooter to play small forward. At the present time his name does not appear in any of the mock drafts I have read. I certainly can't say it won't happen. But, I don't see how anyone can feel sure about it.

I bet he stays. I dont think his game on offense is close to NBA ready

He's not a lottery pick. Maybe a second round pick. He's an outstanding college player and we're lucky to have him but undersized big men without an offensive game outside of 2 feet don't work well in the NBA. His ceiling would be someone like Jason Maxiell unless he improves his post moves and jumper.

Trevor said "two years" when he knew he was going to play this year. Maybe...maybe not. He may be content with playing in Europe knowing he lacks some needed NBA skills. However, other players are on the NBA court with about the same skill-set as Trevor. Chuck Hayes of Houston comes to mind. Defend, rebound, set screens.

I don't see any way he sticks around for another year. He has nothing left to prove to anyone. The idea that he'd stick around to polish his post moves & work on his jumper are wishful thinking. Trevor's 22 already & in 2011 that's an old man by NBA prospect standards. Also, the NBA has never passed on a guy because he's raw, they're more than happy to let unpolished athletes develop the finer points of their game while earning a pay check. That said, I think Trevor's game translates more to Europe than to the NBA. We must remember too, that at the end of the day Trevor's major at the U is basketball, that's what he's here to learn, not trig or sociology. He can go to apply this major in Europe next year & make enough money over the next 5-10 years there to set he & his family up for life, he'd be a fool to pass that up imo.

I would bet he puts his name out there in the draft (w/o an agent obviously) and tries to figure out if anyone is going to take him. When/if nobody makes it clear that they will take him really late in the draft, I can't imagine he wouldn't come back for another year. Why not? He can play abroad regardless. His stock isn't going to take a hit because he stays in school another year, plus I'm sure he would also see it as another year to prove himself to NBA teams (regardless of whether he realistically has a shot).

On another note, just curious... where in Costa Rica are you? I'm studying in San Jose this term.

With a pending CBA, many borderline draft picks will stay in school.

His biggest strengh, from what I have heard, is his plain athleticism he is bigger than Rodney and slightly taller, but with a rumored HIGHER verticle. He is not just a big man who uses his body. He seems to be a big man who can use his body, but also has athleticism.

I have never seen him play in person (although my college roomate got dunked on by him in high school), But I would imagine he is a more physical Josh Smith type player. Maybe similar (game wise) to Dwight Howard. Not really show what his jump shot / handles look like these days though.

Scher215, I thought that you lived on/near campus and this was like your last year?

You write like you are an astute bb fan. How could you never have seen Trevor play?

That commentary on Trevor was written before this season started (on 8/16/2010) lol I do not attend practices, and did not attend much high school basketball. That is why I had never seen Trevor play at that point.

I have season tickets and have seen him play many games this year for the Gophers.

Many people say he IS trying for the NBA and WILL be going pro after this year ...

guessing he'd be a late first rounder - seems like he'd be a solid role player in the nba and that's where a lot of them get picked.

just to celebrate Trevor sticking around for another year. First 4 pages are classic, page 5 & 6 not so much
