Yes on Johnson. If what I typed was misinterpreted as being down on him, not what I intended. The point is Johnson had to play (especially when Robbins went down) out of position, and Gophers had no one else. This is my point. Can't be in that position again. Of course we'd all want Johnson back for another year. Need more size.

In his presser, BJ mentioned something about shooting woes might be more mental/confidence than mechanics. Perhaps he was referring to Gabe and he will get him back on track as you mentioned. Shooting is like golfing - when you're confidence and relaxed, the ball finds the whole a lot easier.

My only main push back in this is when you are in your early years in taking over a program you need some dudes to set the tone culture wise even if at the expense of skill. Can’t be all 13 for sure though.

I think Gabe is plenty skilled especially defensively, but he’s the type of year 1 dude you want.

Gabe's shooting woe's have been going on for two years now. At some point it's no longer a slump, that's just how he shoots.

He still stretches the defense out to guard him on the 3pt line and is our best defender. Having him and Liam's rim protection would be huge to have back next year at a minimum

It seems this is a consistent problem with Pitino's Gophers - not improving in shooting over time. Why does that seem to be the trend? Was Pitino/staff messing with their shooting form? Messing with their heads somehow? Neither? I don't know the answer to these, but those questions need to be asked. Perhaps someone like Gabe regains his confidence under the new coach. That alone makes Gabe from being just another B1G starter to potential star. I know from personal experience the effect a coach and a coach's style has on the play of those under him. Some bring out your best, some bring out your worst. The right fit is important.

Very good points ... I can’t think of one shooter improving under Pitino. All shot worse.

Johnson played (Pitino didn’t) ... Johnson was a shooter (Pitino only complained about shooting).

I think it’s reasonable to be optimistic Johnson will be a better coach for shooters.

I’d argue it’s more offensive system related. I think it’s hard to shoot in Pitinos offensive system because it’s rarely in any rhythm. Think of how you practice shooting. I don’t think it was a coincidence that Gabe shot well having a distributor like Amir who pushed the ball more than in transition and was great at kicking the ball out to guys. That just wasn’t Carr. Similar results happened with Mason.

You're entitled to your opinion. Think down on Gabe if you wish. Just know that others see the whole body of his work and know how valuable he has been to Gopher basketball.

Oturu shot better each year. Joey shot better. Springs was night and day....bad to good, start to finish, his one year.
There are others.

Agreed. With Gabe, I think he's just so cerebral that he started thinking too much. Hopefully Coach Johnson can get Gabe to relax.
