Seems like you could extend this out to so much of what happens in life for people between the ages of 16-25--experience some success, gain in confidence and maturity and you are able to work your up that ladder. Start at a higher rung and struggle, lose confidence and gain self-doubt and it's tough to break the idea that you're a disappointment.

Regarding Omersa, I think he might get an offer somewhere with the expectation that he could be a decent, active, blue-collar defensive type. His advanced stats for things like rebounds, steals, and blocks are pretty good.

Finstuen is an interesting case. Like Sutherlin, he played his first two years at a Wyoming juco. I looked up an article about him from when he was being recruited by Pacific. The recruiting coach asked the juco coach who is the one player on the team you simply couldn't do without and the coach identified Finstuen as that player. In addition to his numbers the juco coach said he did all of the little things.

Finstuen has been a more efficient player than Sutherlin in D1 but played for a better program. Sutherlin appeared to be an iron man for hapless New Hampshire and probably had to do so much of everything that his efficiency suffered.

Ha, Ha, the Bluto quote was the first thing that came to my mind too.

Jess Settles (BTN commentator and former Iowa player) also had 6 years due to chronic injuries. He was a grad student during the the latter days. During a game at Northwestern late in his career, the NW fans chanted "6 more years, 6 more years!" He lamented: "I used to have the kind of game that would quiet that kind of stuff."

He and Gabe both had 11 points last year when we played DePaul. He was 3-5 from 3. Gabe 2-9.

Why a turn off? Kerwin is a wing and Hooloman is a PG.

i would think this would help us with MN players in the 2022 class and moving forward.

Those two would be huge gets. I don't think Kerwin is leaving though as he's familiar with Davis' style. I still think Kerwin could be a 4 year player and have a shot at the nba like Cam Johnson. A 3 and D nba player as he set the UNC record for 3pt% this past season.

As far as Holloman goes, I give Michigan state the slight lean, but I feel Minnesota actually has a shot at him.

If we get a strong class for 2022, I don't really care what the record is next season as long as we play hard and good D.

Yeah I'm pretty nervous about this 2022 class though. We have a lot of competition. King and Holloman could play another sport, Elvis's cousin went elsewhere, Lee has an offer from Kansas, Heide could play where his Dad did. Ben will have his work cut out for them, he'll have to sell the being the hometown hero as well as immediate playing time for some of them.

I think we'll know if he is going to make a difference with the local recruits by what he does or doesn't accomplish with that class.

The first year is the last year in the old division. At least, it was that way for Dakota schools.

Not sure how it will be for UST, because they needed a waiver to go straight to DI from DIII. So it could be five school years starting in 2021-22, or I could see them getting "credit" for 2020-21 as the last year in DIII and counting towards the transition.

These situations, which include at least Carr and Hamilton from UNLV, are...interesting. Not really interested in returning to college, but if pro prospects don’t look satisfactory, then I will find a team. I suppose in the case of these three players, coaches weigh that it’ll worth the time/risk/team chemistry to bring their talent on board but it adds another layer to the chaos of this off-season.
 

Whew, the past couple days have been busy with the portal, with overall numbers shooting past 1300 and will likely pass 1400 in a day or so if this pace continues. Quite a few interesting names since I last did an update on Saturday:

Mac McClung (as posted by mkAz) is doing the NBA entry/portal entry double, so if he comes back to college, he'll be likely headed to his third college in three years. Might he slide on over to Austin to rejoin Beard?

Payton Willis, SG, College of Charleston. The former Gopher will be extending his career at a 4th college, after a successful post-grad year.

Marcus Williams, PG, Wyoming. Hmm, this kid is interesting. Had a pretty good freshman season for the Cowboys, although he faded towards the end of the season. Played in Colorado State's conference, perhaps he and Thorson made a connection :).

Charlie Moore, PG, DePaul. Another peripatetic fella, who like Willis will be headed to his fourth college. Scored around 14 ppg this season, but not very efficiently for a poor team.

Bryce Thompson, SG, Kansas. Freshman who was hampered by injuries and didn't do much this season, but was a top 50 recruit coming out of high school.

Daejon Davis, SG, Stanford. Scored around 10 ppg in senior year with The Cardinal capping a solid if unspectacular four years.

Thomas Kithier and Joey Brunk, Michigan St and Indiana, respectively. A couple big men, veteran bench guys who could provide depth for a team needing front court help.

Cheikh Mbacke Diong, UNLV. Another NBA entrant/transfer portal guy. 6'11", All-Defensive Team, senior who averaged 9 and 7.5 for the Running Rebels. Another guy who hopefully Thorson connected with in the handshake line.

Daniel Batcho, Arizona. European big who was injured throughout freshman season and didn't play. One would imagine if he ended up in Tucson, he's got some talent.

KJ Walton, Ball State, SG. Looking to go from college ball to social security-next season will be his 7th season in college (transfer season from Missouri, injury RS, plus this bonus season). Averaged 16 ppg and 6 rpg as a 6'3" shooting guard this past season.

Oumar Ballo, Gonzaga, C. 7' who played sparingly this past season and may be reading the tea leaves and seeing that Drew Timme might be returning and Chet Holmgren may be joining the team and figured out he'd be sitting a lot again this upcoming year.

What's interesting from the portal?

Whoever at cbs sportsline who wrote that article about the winners/losers of the draft portal was waaaay early on putting that out. Yes, Minnesota was hit hard as they transition to a new coach and try to move on from a 13th place conference finish. But consider for a moment Texas Tech. Chris Beard leaves and admin quickly moves to appoint Mark Adams, well respected assistant coach to head coach. Either the players hate Lubbock, aren't fans of Adams or a combo of both because since the hiring, three starters have went into the portal, another has declared for the NBA draft, and three bench players have also went into the portal. One bit of good news is KJ Allen, the standout on Last Chance U, changed his commitment from USC to Texas Tech.

Meanwhile, Beard and his crew are putting in work--they've received commitments from two of the bigger names in the portal, Timmy Allen (formerly of Utah) and Devin Askew (Kentucky) while also bringing Jaylon Tyson, a top 50 commit, over from TT.

Other big names and their new homes (from just the past couple days):
Walker Kessler, Auburn (formerly UNC)
Boogie Ellis, USC (Memphis)
Xavier Pinson, LSU (Missouri)
Matt Bradley, San Diego St (Cal)

Thanks for the updates, coolhandgopher. The portal is so large and there is so much continuous movement that it is really, really tough to keep up with. And yes, there is STILL an absolute shit-ton of quality talent (both starting and complementary level) in the portal, with more being added every day.

I'm not sure if you've mentioned him (or if anyone else has during the course of this thread, but given our PG situation (basically: desperation city), one player I find highly interesting is Siena transfer Jalen Pickett. Contrary to both E.J. Stephens and Luke Loewe, Pickett is a true point guard who was very well-regarded amongst the ranks of the mid-majors. IMO he'd make a fine lead guard here and would be a quality replacement for Marcus Carr, and to his benefit, he'd get a TON of immediate playing time here and a big opportunity to elevate his stock in the eyes of NBA scouts.

It's really insane--the site I'm looking at (verbalcommits.com-I forget who linked it here earlier, but kudos to them), has a "recent updates" section at its top which basically covers the last 48 hours. I just counted the number in that section and it added up to 118 updates--of those, 55 were indicating players who had chosen the school in which to transfer. I can't help but think there's going to be a lot of players, some pretty talented, that will be left in the lurch when all the dust settles.

One type of player that seems to be developing a glut of, is shooting guards, in the 6'2 to 6'5" range, from mid-major or low-major schools who have averaged in double figures but in most cases not so efficiently (and coming from poor teams). Seems that every third player on the list has that profile.

And no, I haven't mentioned Pickett, but I've seen others bring his name to the conversation (perhaps it was you). As you said, it seems imperative to get a lead guard onto the team (especially since it seems that our anticipated additional assistant coach's nephew/cousin is also more a combo guard). Who knows who'll be entering the portal in the next few days or weeks though--I thought it might slow down by now, given that you would think if a player was dissatisfied with their situation, they would have been able to enter the day after their season ended, but that hasn't been the case.
 

Am I the only one who thinks granting a free extra year - without requiring the player to opt-out this year - along with no-sit-out transfer was prematurely offered and just really a stupid idea?

I think given how miserable the college basketball experience was for most players (with all the testing, social isolation, etc) last year, it's probably a fair move.

Plus, the decision was made back when it was less certain that there would be a full season even played.
