Will the U ever schedule a game against St Thomas?

No doubt St Thomas could use the money, and the U hasn't been too proud to schedule I-AA teams. Would you do it if you were Athletic Director? If not, why not?
 

If they go full scholarship, then it's possible.

I don't think they (UST) have any plans to ever do that. Way too much cost, for what it gets you. I think Pioneer League (non-scholarship) is perfect for them.

Also, I believe there is a rule that in order for a win against an FCS team to count for bowl eligibility, that team has to sponsor a minimum number of scholarships.
 




There's only 2 reasons UST would schedule this. Either they think they are good enough to beat us (LOL) or for the money. Since they don't have to travel for that game, no reason to pay them squat so it aint happening.

Huh? We don't pay our lesser opponents because they have to travel, we pay them to play them. That's true whether they rent a bus for a few thousand bucks or they are an FCS school from further out.

Would it ever happen? Probably not. As others have pointed out, St. Thomas would need to become a scholarship level FCS program. At that point, the U probably doesn't schedule it but maybe. It would be a non-conference game we should absolutely roll with a slight tinge of more intrigue for some people.
 

It is part of the pay. And considered the part that you can upcharge the easiest. Yes, you also pay them to take the loss but that's only part of the equation. UST can make more money, if that's their main goal, by playing someone farther away.
 



Thought I read somewhere that Coyle already said he would not schedule them in football. I think hockey would be a possibility, though.

We've already played them in hockey -- albeit an exhibition (which was played at South Saint Paul's Arena). I don't think there would be any reason we wouldn't play them in hockey moving forward.
 


No reason to play them. Perhaps it would draw interest from the Tommy side, but not from the Gopher side as to fans. I clearly wouldn't be interested in this game.

This. Who cares if St. Thomas could use the money. Our AD should schedule games that help us and games that our fans want to see. Destroying an overmatched opponent who offers less SOS than even the Leathernecks accomplishes neither. We'd probably have more St. Thomas fans at the stadium than Gopher fans, since none of us would care. That alone would be reason enough not to do it - don't turn our stadium into an away game for our team.
 

Makes not sense at all to play the Tommies, unless they are in the MVFC or better. And with the changing conferences and P5 football, it likely won't be an option in the future. It would destroy St. Thomas to show how much lower of a tier they are in football to local recruits.
 


I keep trying to find a reason to play this game at all .... haven't seen a good one yet ...

This is like that weird internet phenomenon where folks declare "Prove this wrong or it's true!".

Russell's Teapot has to do with the burden of proof or disproof regarding faith-based truth claims. Not remotely applicable here.

You don't need to prove or disprove anything here. The original question was only whether the U should or shouldn't schedule a future non-conference game with St Thomas.

They most likely have the money, but they would need updated facilities, and being so close to the gophers, would they ever draw enough people? They only get a few thousand people per game.

maybe if football spins off and doesn't count for title ix -- but you are asking them to fund scholarships for a football team and then a bunch of women's sports.

content or not they profile as a "catholic seven" type school -- a midwestern Providence if you may -- who can focus on basketball and hockey

Opponent travel costs definitely play some role in how much you pay for a buy game, especially true for basketball, but also true to a lesser degree in football. For example, the Gophers would likely not pay South Dakota as much to bus here to play football or basketball as they would pay Eastern Washington or William & Mary to fly charter here.

Highly unlikely St. Thomas would ever be on the football schedule unless they move up to a higher football level (MVC, etc.). St. Thomas is, however, on many other Gopher schedules, including volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, etc.
 

The future will be home and home contracts. We will never play them. NDSU will be out in the cold soon because of this.
