*** Gophers vs. Badgers - 11/23 Pre-Game Thread!!!! ***

Nope, not at all, just get tired of the Wisconsin arrogance. However, not surprising that you come to the defense of your Wisconsin brethren. I know, I know, "I graduated from the U" blah blah blah. It's easy to see who your allegiance is to.

I think you should take the tact of the poster directly above you. Also, way to go after the actual point I made. Real value add.

Since when is stating statistics in a pregame thread to correct a misconception arrogant? Me thinks you saw the stats and got angry because you had absolutely nothing to counter the simple point I was making, and that the point bothered you a little bit because you realized what it meant.

"arrogance" happens when you win 9 straight by an average of 16.6 points. Or 3 straight Big Ten Championships.

That's right. Minnesota does have to prove it belongs. Da Goph's will show up and represent. Bank on it!

I hope they do! (of course with a badger victory at the end) I for one love having MN ranked again to make the axe week meaningful again

My counter would be to ask how many of those "explosive play" and YPC stats were padded against UT-directional, Savannah State, NorthWestSouthern School of the Blind, etc.

No, I'm not arguing against you guys having an explosive offense (I agree that you do), I am just saying that would be my counter to your statistics.

In their B1G games (and BYU), their TDs of >40 yards:

vs. Purdue:
70 yard White TD run

vs Northwestern:
63 yard Abbrederis TD reception
71 yard Gordon TD run

@ Iowa:
44 yard Pedersen TD reception

vs Indiana:
93 yard White TD run
49 yard Abbrederis TD run

Badgers fans made a poll about how drunk they will be tomorrow at the game. And then they argue that they aren't the worst fans in the Big Ten...

http://buckyville.yuku.com/topic/68012/How-Drunk-Will-You-be-in-TCF#.Uo79mcTrw4p

What I do find rather ironic in the whole Wisconsin drunk arguments is that many Badgers fans, Packers fans, and Wisconsinites in general will come to the defense of their reputation when people rip them for being so drunk all the time. Their responses generally are, "we're really not any different than Minnesotans, Iowans, etc."

But then when Wisconsin is mentioned as a "Top Party school" or the state being at the top of "most bars per capita", they're not afraid to gloat and pound their chests like they're better than everyone else.

That's fine if you want to be proud of those things but then don't get offended when people rip on you for that same thing.

I hate everything about WI, but am not sure why some fans wanting to get drunk for the game makes them bad fans? I like to get drunk before games and I am as strong of a Gopher Fan as anyone. Does that make me a bad fan? I am pretty sure WI doesn't have a patent on drunk fans. Silly thing to poke at them for, IMO.

For comparison, the Gophers have just one score of 40 yards or more in BT play: the Maxx Williams TD at Indiana (50 yards).

I think that just proves why the Gophers have to be more sound on offense. We just don't have the ability to score quickly very often. We have to sustain drives. Penalties and mistakes will kill our drives most of the time.

Ryan Burns ‏@RyanBurnsGI 1m Just got confirmation that #Gopher RB commit Jeff Jones (@WaveyJJ_10) will be taking an unofficial visit to #Minnesota this weekend.

FWIW, Wisconsin has been very explosive this year. Wisconsin gains 20+ yards on 7.9% of rush attempts, best in the country. They are second in plays of 50 yards or more, behind only Baylor. Wisconsin has 14 rushing TD's of 20 yards or more, tied with Oregon for best in the country. Wisconsin also averages 9.4 yards per rush outside the tackles, best of any AQ team.

Wisconsin backs average 4.3 yards per carry before first contact, best of any AQ team, and 1.8 yard above average. Jared Abbrederis also has 6 catches of 50 yards or more, and 12 over 25, so it's not just the running game.

You're right. On paper, the Gophers should have no chance - and maybe they don't. But this is college ball and this is a home game, so I'm hoping we hang with them and have a chance in the second half to get the axe.

Sustaining drives is the key. ASU has 30 more plays than Wisconsin and had 3 of 5 scoring drives of over 10 plays. Those four of their drives ended in rushing TD's. That is what we have to do. Sustain drives and rides on the offense.

The key to stopping White is eliminating his cutback. This back loves to cut back against the grain and all he needs is a crease or a small hole to get loose. You have to stay square to this guy and attack him, you cannot just sit there and watch the guy make moves and stand flat footed doing that will get you beat every time.
Getting the Center and the Right and Left guards pushed back and off balance at there hips is key. They like to turn and use there hips, if you can get them off balance by using that against them and then filling the back side or chopping down the cut back lane you can get him. The tailbacks White and Gordon are both elite(But White is the cutback artist) both have elite speed so you have to take away there space and even small creases by stopping there motion first getting there and get them early, get the lead blockers and motion tight end pushed back in to them and clogging up space. Abederis is lighting quick, he is much faster than what a lot of people would give him credit for. We cannot let him get loose and behind us or they will hit a deep ball off play action.
This game, there is no stepping around blocks or giving up your gap, in this game you have to fight through the man and keep them in front of you. This is not going to be an easy game, guy's are going to feel overwhelmed at times like they are under pressure but they do not need to be. Wisconsin is playing for even more than we are the BCS games or even potentially hoping that Ohio State slips up in one game so they sneak back to Indianapolis, and of course they do not want to give up the Axe. They have the pressure of keeping the streak going and there reputation on the line as a dominant team.
What do we have to lose, were not supposed to even be in this game or anywhere near 8-2 but the guy's in that room believed and continued to compete hard and show they belong.

I don't kid myself about that, how dififcult this game is going to be, they are very good at what they do, but we cannot just bow down and let them do what they like. The D is going to have to relentless in pursuit but disciplined enough to stay home and not let them get the cut back. Our O-line is going to have to rise up and block like they never have before and Cobb is going to have to pick the right holes and go for it. We are good but yes we are going to have to raise up to there level of execution to beat them, we all know that. We have to be just as methodical, controlled and stoic and nasty as they are. The referees are obviously from a conference perspective going to favor them even though the Gophers are at home because of the potential for a BCS bowl and larger pay day. This means, we cannot retaliate against the dirty and the cheap shots or have any late or questionable hits as we will get flagged. Our Gophers are going to have to be smart enough not to be the second guy getting caught doing something late or near out of bounds. These referees are no doubt going to be looking to make calls against the Gophers that is a given, that is just how it has always been. We have to be clean in our execution and not give them the chance to throw the flag. I like our chances to hang with these guys and believe that we can win, just know it will not come cheap or easy. I think the Gophers have the Spirit and the will to get the job done. Half the battle is believing and they already do that, believe, they are good enough to win. This is going to be a tough football game, but it will be worth it in the end seeing our guy's run across the field.

Buddy, I love your enthusiasm and obvious love/knowledge of football. I read each and every one of your long posts like this one but please, please learn the difference between "there" and "their"

Also, I don't really buy the bolded part as "obvious"

I read this too and it made me laugh at how stupid drunk they get.

A little background, I used to live in Madison and worked in the UW Emergency Room for a few years while going to school. Since then, I have traveled and worked in a few different states and about 16 different hospitals. Wisconsin is the only place where I have had patients admitted into the ER because they literally fell off their bar stool, cracked their skulls, and were placed on ventilators. This wasn't a one time thing. It happened almost every weekend and sometimes multiple times.

Also, I had the pleasure of seeing Bielema pass out at a bar with Bo Ryan being his unimpressed DD. Wish I still had the picture.

Regarding the game, someone unexpected is going to have to step up huge. Go Goldy!

I say that because of commisioner Delaney.

I have had brainlock on "their" and "there" since grade school and have trouble with summarization. One is possesive like ownership or belongs to, and the other is descriptive. Don't give me too much credit for kowledge of football I love the game, but not enough to be anymore than just another fan talking out of my butt at times. Trust me I wasn't that good a player in high school, only played on special teams.
Money kind of makes the world go around, especially in Big time college athletics, and from a Delaney and Big 10 conference perspective I suggest that the natural tendancy is going to be to favor the side that might garner the whole conference more money and exposure overall. It may not be obvious but I would suggest potential money and revenue is a tendancy in athletics that plays a role.

Referees should and for the most part are impartial, but reputation and historic backgrounds can cause them to be more favorable on calls when there are grey areas or questionable situations. I do think the referees will call this game possibly, more clean than usual because of the significance of the game for both teams. That and both teams seem to have gained a level of respect prior to this game for the coaching staffs and the way they play the game. I just think the borderline or questionable stuff might favor them in this situation because of conference bowl allignment and the way things are playing out in that situation. I just hope it is an evenly officiated game,I do not think the refs are going to be going out of there way to make penalty calls.

Great. I just hope the wisconsin drunks don't puke on him.

Setting up an excuse for a loss? Seriously you are already thinking about the refs impact on this game? Wow.

You're a good dude. I don't think the refs will job us tomorrow and I don't think you should worry about that either.

College GameDay ‏@CollegeGameDay 25m Who ya got...

Wisconsin or Minnesota?

OK, so we've lost 9 straight to them, they're ranked higher, we're 16 point underdogs, and we have three starters out on offense. We've only won 9 games in a year once since 1906. What? Yeah, once.

But, consider this...the BADgers are playing NOT TO LOSE the axe. C'mon. How many times does that work out? Right. Like never.

  • By all accounts (um, by all I mean a few players, coaches and GHers) we haven't played our best game, yet
  • Many pundits seem to think we've shown consistent improvement over the Kill tenure, and over the course of this season.
  • Some experts (me) think this staff is pretty good with Xs & Os and they've had 2 weeks to work on this.
  • Wisconsin hasn't fared well in big games this year (lost to ASU, Ohio). Gophers are #25.
  • Both Wisc losses came on the road.
I could go on and on, but the most important element is we're playing TO WIN the axe.

Advantage: Gophers

Pretty well the last 8 years

This.

People are setting their expectations way too high for this game. Wisconsin is better than us in almost every position. Yes, the Gophers could pull off an upset, but it would be a major upset. Hope for a win, but temper your expectation fellow Gophers: Expect the team to give it their all and play with heart. This season is already a success.

No not setting up excuses for a loss.

Setting up an excuse for a loss? Seriously you are already thinking about the refs impact on this game? Wow.[/QUOTE
I think I have been pretty positive in my assessment all week that the Gophers can win this football game. I like our defensive front four and rotation a lot especially our D tackles and Botticelli is going to be extra motivated to show the Badgers they missed out on a great player. That and I think we have the smarter quarterback and a better athlete a that spot. He Nelson can make soup out of chicken bleep some times so I think he is more than capable of leading the team.
The pressure is all on them UW. Playing to maintain a long streak and to hold on to the Axe(not to be the senior class that lost the AXE). That is a lot of pressure. They are playing for a shot at a BCS game and top finish, playing to prove your still a dominant team and deserve to be in the conversation for future title games or a top ranked finish, and the Gophers are still little brother to them, playing to a fan base that has been a little spoiled by success, They are three time Rose bowl participants and conference title game winners.
It's just as big a game for them as it is the Gophers. I like our chances to be loose and playing to win as we are not expected to be in the game if you listen to the experts and the oddsmakers. Our coaches have had two weeks to prepare the guy's they should be plenty ready and rested up to the challenge. The goal is to come out not be too hyped like Iowa and blow your wadds, we need to be calculating, methodical, stoic in the face of adversity and expect succes. Just breath brothers have fun and play well.
We cannot let the officials dictate outcomes of plays based on questionable hits or even give them retaliation that will hurt the team Everyone knows it is going to be a grown mans game tomorrow as big Shede has said. There a top five running team, we need an edge and cannot give the officials a chance to blow calls or take stupid penalty's there is no room for that. We need to put a hat on the ball or punch it out, nobody has done that to them, Gophers have to be oportunistic like that. I'm not expecting to see the Gophers lose, just know there pretty dang good and it is a tremendous challenge. They win conference titles for a reason, we have a lot to step up to the plate tomorrow and win, as Gophers have not been in a position like that. This is going to be tough football game.
