*** Gophers vs. Badgers - 11/23 Pre-Game Thread!!!! ***

I think the D ends have to play big. Iowa ran right at the D ends and stayed away from the middle on their big runs. Hopefully coaching staff can figure something out before this game because that's what I was concerned walking away from that Iowa game. That we were still just too small to stand up to a big time O line. Maybe Im crazy but I see Iowa and Wisconsin as similar teams when it comes to the offence side of the ball. Which scares me. That being said this squad has proven me wrong against, Neb, NW, ect... Either way enjoying this run and cant wait for the Skunks to come to town. The build up and pregame for this game will be the biggest in years!!! This is what college FB is all about glad its back around town!!!

Go Gophers!!!!

I would absolutely love if this game was played in a blizzard...

This is going to be a long two week wait.

Yah, that is great. It means we will be introduced to tons of Threads involving drivel.

I suggest we have a New Thread titled All Things Drivel. Wren can start it. :)

Remember when wisconsin came to the Bank in Kill's 1st year? Remember when the wisconsin players ran through the Gopher players with the axe to chop the goal posts between the Gopher players and Gopher fans while the Gopher players were doing there post game ritual with the fans?

I remember Kill appearing pretty shocked and pretty pissed off when that happened. With the comments both Limegrover and Claeys have made this week regarding wisconsin, my guess is that they genuinely don't like wisconsin. My guess is that the team this coaching staff most wants to beat is wisconsin. Something tells me they'll be showing the film of that post game to show the fellas how wisconsin celebrated in THEIR HOUSE!

Well if they didn't like it, they should have stopped during the game. No one hates Wisconsin more than I do but cutting down the goalposts is a tradition that dates back a long time.

We just need to remember you don't cut down your own.

The Gophers can cut down every fricken goal post in the county if they win next Saturday for all I care.

Not sure if this can be posted enough.....

Wisconsin looked really good against Indiana. I suspect Vegas is reacting to how Wisconsin is rolling. Plus, no matter what the Gophers do, they don't seem to get much respect from the bookmakers.

Yep, up to 15.5 now. Kind of strange when it is #19 at #25, and the road team is favored by 2 touchdowns. I think we should be able to cover at least, Kill and staff always seem to make pretty good gameplans for opponents

I got this from GopherLady, but if you are an iPhone user, ask Siri who her favorite college football team is. Ski U Mah

Well folks, this is what it's all about. I just don't see any way this could get better. Left for dead, the Gophers have risen up and have become a team of destiny. By kickoff Northwestern will have started a slew of upsets and we'll have control of our B1G title hopes. The stats, the scores...on paper, it looks like we shouldn't even play the game. Vegas must think our wins as dogs were flukes and our luck will run out. Everyone thinks we will come back to Earth, finally be revealed as inferior to the "good" teams in this conference. Our hated rival has won the last 9 meetings. Can there be a better opportunity to have a more satisfying win than this? In front of our home fans?! I cannot wait. As a sports fan, this is a dream come true.

It's not like either team will be throwing it all over the place, or has an explosive offense...on paper. This should be a relatively low scoring game. Giving that many points is just amazing to me.

I'm going to Vegas tomorrow through Friday and then flying in to Minneapolis Friday night for the game. Thinking about taking Wisconsin on the moneyline so that I'll have a consolation if we come up short. If the Gophers win I could truly careless about the bet. Seems like a win-win.

In 6 Big Ten games Wisconsin is averaging nearly 40 points per game and 500 yards of total offense. If that doesn't qualify as explosive offense on paper I am not sure what does. On the other side of the ball they are limiting teams to 15 points a game and under 300 yards. I think there is a decent chance we cover and could even win out right but it is not hard to see where Vegas could come up with a big number like that.

Easy with all your facts and grounded opinions. It's things like this that have somehow made me into a Badger fan according to some on this board.

Good hedge. OR, you could do the opposite and leverage up with the Gophers on the moneyline! You've got to bet big to win big!

THIS, we need a rover and a three man front!!!!!!!

I would like to see us play with 4 DL's and 4 LB's against some of their offensive sets. (Campbell and Hill really allow for some flexibility playing run and pass.) I'm afraid that if we don't, we will get outflanked with some of their unbalanced sets and get worked as Wisky has created an extra gap.

We need to have an uncommon defensive look and confuse there quarterback. I'm not saying put 8 to nine in the box all of the time as that is what get's teams beat against these guys. You bring everybody up and let these cheaters in the Wisconsin O-line maul you by grabbing your guys and it is game over on the edge. What gets teams beat against them is bringing everyone up like a chinese fire drill and trying to flood the holes and then they seal you off and the backs are home free. Teams that stay strong in there gap discipline clog there gaps up and lanes and muck it up and have linebackers that are free to run to the edge from the fullback or the Tight end can make plays against there run game. Need to get a jam against the Tight end and fullback at the line, not let them get a full head of steam. Linebackers must attack and tackle the running back, they break tackles and they have the speed to burn you big time.

If ever a game called for a rover or safety disguised as a robber or rover it is this is the game. This could even be a game where you play a three man front with Hagemen, Botticelli and Roland Johnson and Epke rotating a lot with a fourth linebacker. You have to keep the linebackers free to make plays.
I feel like you can do some damage against Marz on the left side of the offensive line. They like to run the stretch play to that side, we need to disguise when we overload to that side of the line. Marz at left tackle you can overwhelm him with quickness and a bit of a bull rush off the edge and an overload. Pound the hell out of Pederson the tight end all game and you take away a weapon that Bucky likes to use in the passing game. You need to pound the snot out of that guy, same with Aberderis his game is quickness you need to rough him up and take away his wheels. This game I feel like Wisconsin is going to try and run the jet sweep against us like they did Indiana and they will like run the counter to the left side trying to suck our defensive ends in as always. Seems to me they will try and set up some screen passes to counter our agression, our people need to be discilplined enough to sniff this out.
Roland Johnson and Cameron Botticelli are key this game, they have to get under the Wisconsin line pad level and get penetration up the field to take on the fullbacks (Haverson the right guard is a little fat and slow but the guy is a mauler and c0ck strong) so Johnson has to get under his pads and beat him off the football. Play Rashede Hagemen some at left defensive end with the other tackles playing the other gaps and let him beat Marz one on one. This is a game where you can gameplan Campbell or Manual like an extra linebacker, even Cockhran the defensive end, both are quick enough to cover the tight end and play a three man front with four linebackers.
This may not seem like the most obvious thing to do but it is, keep an extra linebacker free and make sure you fill all of the gaps and clog things up. Like coach Kill likes to say you have to play fast against these guy's or they will eat you up.
They are pretty good football team but there are ways you can attack them and frusturate there offense.

All I know is that the U better have some ambulances ready to move if we win. I wouldn't be surprised if the heart attack rate in the stadium didn't skyrocket if we pull out the win.

Dropped and Badly Thrown Passes

Think that both teams will "sell-out" to stop the run? Me too. That could mean that whoever throws the ball well could win it. The misgivings I'm suffering involve the Opponent's Passing Game. It certainly seems or feel like the last four victories featured teams that had thrown the ball rather well coming into the game, suffering a whole lot of badly dropped and thrown passes. Even against Indy, it seemed like the First Half featured them and when they corrected that in the Second Half everything started to open up for them and they put a LOT of points on the board.

The irony being that it was a bad throw (and good Defensive call) that cost them the game.

Maybe it's just a that the Gophers seem to have cut down mightily on their bad throws/drops that makes it more obvious. Either way, hope it continues.

Valid points. But, over the years I've been taught that the Vegas bookmakers are uncanny in how right they are. They do miss some, which is convenient for my Pollyanna view. A wise coach once told me it's not always as much about who you play as when you play them. I think there are many things going for us to make this one of the Vegas mistakes.

I took the liberty of correcting a couple of your typos. No offense intended. Your post is what makes this so fun. What if the coaches actually do some of the things you suggest? Some of it sounds reasonable. I want wait to find out what Limegrover and Claeys have cooked up after 2 weeks.
