Gophers in Mayo Bowl vs Va Tech!!

Kind of sucks. Better than the Pinstripe Bowl.....but this is probably the one year where we would have gotten a better opponent in Phoenix. And for the umpeenth time in a row.....we're playing a power conference foe with a worse record than us.
The Gophers are 7-5 and were offered a bowl game in a warm(er) climate on a day that most people have off work

Would I have preferred the Reliaquest bowl against Alabama? Hell yeah. But they lost to Michigan.

Not like the Gophers got screwed this year. This is exactly the bowl that they deserved and it beats playing an away game in Detroit against BGSU last year.

Just thinking that the 7-5 Gophers vs. the 6-6 Hokies probably doesn't draw a whole lot of attention. Although.....it's the only game on at the time.....so we'll get viewers.
It should get at least 3.5-4.0 million viewers.
It could end up one of the 10 most watched bowls just based on its excellent time slot alone.

The type of person who is in the 4% of the population that may watch this game doesn’t care about the record of the teams involved. If anything the several close loses both teams have had make the match-up more intriguing to most viewers and will give the broadcast an easy, compelling story.

I have a co-worker who went to Virginia Tech and we have been saying all year this matchup was going to happen in the bowls. I feel a small wager is probably in store here! Gotta take the Gophers to extend their bowl streak!!

Most people don't work on Jan. 3? I doubt that. Even my kids are back in school by then.

I love this matchup. In my twenties and early thirties, Virginia Tech was always in play for a conference Championship and even a national championship.

Again, places where there are a lot of flights and multiple airlines out of MSP. Sun Country has limited destinations. Those all play into the price.
Correct. Charlotte is an AA hub and MSP isn't a big AA airport.

Weird that I can’t find any official Mayo Bowl appreciation announcements from the VT football organization or their HC Brent and it’s been over 24 hours?! Maybe they don’t appreciate the invite since it is their 3 time going there. No presser addressing how excited they are playing us from their HC I thought it’s pretty tasteless and unprofessional.

Heck ya. Duke's is the best mayo and it's not remotely close.
Do they even sell it in MN?

Hellman's is what we buy. I have been looking into making my own animal fat mayo. I don't think the seed oils are good for you and I as m pretty certain they aren't good for my GI tract...

There might be some kids in school, but the majority of metro area public schools are off through that week.
Don't need to get into a debate but a quick search shows Anoka Hennepin, Mounds View, White Bear, Wayzata, Lakeville, Stillwater all have school. Only one I searched that is off is Tonka.

I think the Talmud Torah of St. Paul (enrollment of 5, all pre-schoolers) will be on break.

Definitely not worthy of a debate. Minneapolis, St Paul, Bloomington, Minnetonka, Hopkins, Edina, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Woodbury, and nearly every private school I looked at are off through the 3rd. Looks like it’s a pretty even mix.

I’ll be working so it doesn’t really matter for us even though my kids are off!

Yeah I assumed everyone would be off that full stretch.

My kids are.

And I doubt they have full attendance, and might have to add a makeup day later to qualify for full funding.

It's a Friday night prime time game.

It will get eyeballs on it for at least a few minutes.

It is a sweet slot. Close to the last football game. And a gimmick. See the winning coach get coated with Mayo.

Can confirm that Duke's Mayo is available at Kowalski's in Eden Prairie.

I'm a sucker for bowl marketing...I'll give it a shot!

FWIW - The Athletic has a big article with 9 college FB writers picking the results of every playoff game and Bowl Game.

For the Mayo Bowl, 8 of the 9 writers picked the Gophers to win. Someone named Dan Santaromita picked VA Tech. He is listed as a "Senior Editor for Sports Betting" at The Athletic. now there's a job.

I tried it after last year’s Mayo Bowl and rank it above all others now - it’s Tasty

I've seen Duke's in the Hy-Vee's down here in Rochester

The Spring Lake Park Hy-Vee's slot for regular Duke's (not light) was wiped out. Hellman's and Miracle Whip everywhere, but no Duke's. Walmart, none. Might have to try Cub.

My wife and I have irreconcilable differences when it comes to mayo. She keeps flirting with Miracle Whip and slipping it in on the side while I'm a true blue Duke's man.

Who's playing at the Tackle positions in the Mayo Bowl? I'm guessing Ersery skips with being a likely high draft pick and Daniels decided to sit on the bench at OSU behind some more highly rated prima donna's.

Will Roy get the start? Maybe Carroll or Lewis slipping back to Tackle? Nkele up to speed?

Yes, and it is matchup of two programs from power conferences. College football fans who like college football will watch. College football fans who have internalized a bizarre cynicism about college football and non college football fans will cry about it and shit on it like they do everything else in their miserable lives. Guess which crowd matters??!!

wild guess - Quinn Carroll at LT and Lewis at RT. Tony Nelson takes one of the Guard spots.

Duke's mayo has been available at most Walmarts around here for the better part of the last 20 years. You can now find it at Cub, Hyvee and Coborns as well. Now, if you're looking for Cheerwine, that's a little tougher to track down, but it can still be found if you're willing to dig.
