Gophers in Mayo Bowl vs Va Tech!!

Kind of sucks. Better than the Pinstripe Bowl.....but this is probably the one year where we would have gotten a better opponent in Phoenix. And for the umpeenth time in a row.....we're playing a power conference foe with a worse record than us.
If it was PHX, Nashville, Tampa, or even Nashville, the Thorps would go, think we'll sit one out and watch from a warmer destination.

As I posted in another thread, VA Tech's average ranking (from Sagarin, Team Rankings, Sports Reference, and Massey) is 34.5. Gophers' average of ratings from those four is 31.5. In terms of computer rankings, we probably drew the closest match from the ACC.

I know. They're better than their record indicates. Just thinking that the 7-5 Gophers vs. the 6-6 Hokies probably doesn't draw a whole lot of attention. Although.....it's the only game on at the time.....so we'll get viewers. Just think that the casual viewer might disregard the game as a toilet bowl rather than if we had gotten a 8-4 ACC team or the 9-3 Blue Devils.

I think you're right but I think it's going to be a really good, fun game. Hoping for great weather. Might venture there if forecast is positive.

This will be the 12th team from the current ACC that Minnesota has played. All time, Minnesota is 20-14-1 Vs. the ACC. Some of the teams in the ACC now were in different conferences when the Gophers played them, though.

The most played opponent for Minnesota in the ACC is Pitt, with the Gophers leading the series 9-3. Minnesota has also played two ACC squads six times, they’re 4-2 against Syracuse and 2-4 Vs. Cal. Again, all the Cal games were during their time in the PAC 10/12.

Overall, Minnesota has winning records against Wake Forest, SMU, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Pitt and Syracuse. The Gophers have losing records against Cal, Virginia, NC State and North Carolina. Minnesota is at .500 against Stanford, with a 1-1-1 record. Without the newcomers SMU, Cal and Stanford, Minnesota is 16-9 against the ACC.

The Gophers are 3-3 in bowl games Vs. the ACC, with the results below:
  • 1985 Independence Bowl Vs. Clemson, Win
  • 2000 MicronPC Bowl Vs. NC State, Loss
  • 2005 Music City Bow Vs. Virginia, Loss
  • 2013 Texas Bowl Vs. Syracuse, Loss
  • 2018 Quick Lane Bowl Vs. Georgia Tech Win
  • 2022 Pinstripe Bowl Vs. Syracuse, Win
Against the Big Ten all time, Virginia Tech is 32-28, which includes a loss against USC and a defeat Vs. UCLA. Unsurprisingly, their most played match-up is Maryland, where their record is 15-17.

Next up is Rutgers, which is a series they lead 12-5. They’re 1-0 Vs. Indiana, 2-1 Vs. Nebraska, 1-1 against Ohio State, 1-1 Vs. Purdue and 0-1 against Michigan. In bowl games against the Big Ten, they’re 2-3
  • 1993 Independence Bowl Vs. Indiana, Win
  • 1996 Orange Bowl Vs. Nebraska, Loss
  • 2012 Sugar Bowl Vs. Michigan, Loss
  • 2012 Athletic Bowl Vs. Rutgers, Win
  • 2021 Pinstripe Bowl Vs. Maryland, Loss
While the Gophers have never played Virginia Tech on the gridiron, they have on the basketball court. Minnesota played Virginia Tech twice in basketball via the ACC-Big Ten Challenge games, once in 2011 and again in 2022. Minnesota won the 2011 match-up while Virginia Tech got the victory in 2022.

No question Va Tech is hard to beat!
Lost to Vandy by 7 in OT
Lost by 3 to Rutgers
Lost by 3 to Duke
Lost by 4 to Top 25 Miami
Lost to Top 25 Syracuse in OT by 7
Lost by 10 to Top 25 Clemson

Gonna be difficult but the danger is players/fans will just see the 6 and 6.

I don’t know. I think a casual fan that doesn’t pay attention might just not look at the records at all and assume Virginia tech is better than Duke because of coach K and Michael Vick

Maybe. Virginia Tech is definitely a better football brand than Duke.

The Gophers are going to get crushed. Seeing the teams being thrown around this morning, Virgina Tech was the team that scared me the most and that’s the way the chips fell. 😭

Hence, Virginia Tech will be able to enjoy chips with their sandwiches and mayo happily, unlike Minnesota. 😔

Virginia Tech by at least three scores. Something like 44-10. 😔 Our bowl winning streak is over. 😣

You give me 34.5 and I'll take Gophers for as much as you want.

Lest we forget though how salty Georgia Tech was in 2018 that they drew an inferior Power 5 opponent and felt slighted.

This match-up bores me to no end. That being said, it is a decent destination and we might find ourselves in Charlotte for the game.

Let's look back at your smooth brained prediction from last year.....

Then we lose by 40+ and to a MAC school. That's really going to get the casual fans angry and calling for more heads. Not to mention make the regular to die hard fans sad and depressed. :(

Honestly, wherever they go, they should be double digit/2 TDs+ underdogs. I know they might get some players back for the game, but I don't think it'll make much difference. Plus, I just don't see the players getting up for the game, especially after the way the last month has been. You then add that to a PWO QB and you have a recipe for disaster and a blowout.

Or the year before.....

This is what is replaying in the back of my mind too as locally it seemed like people were acting like we should crush them and instead we got crushed.

Looking at Syracuse, FSU, etc. has me thinking we will be heavy underdogs and extremely likely to lose. Whoever we play sounds like it will be a really tough game for us to win. 😣😔

We've got a dope here, folks.

Good opponent with a football resume and pretty good destination. Charlotte is somewhat like Minneapolis. It has a typical downtown of any big city. It's pretty much a pro sports town too, even though their pro sports teams have really sucked lately.
