Gophers 2016 Spring Game Recap, Reactions and Analysis Thread

Stetler looked bigger to me. He was a little undersized as a DT. Streveler looks like a rock. I honestly think he should be a gunner on punts. He's fearless. Johannsessen eas impressive. He ran hard and with purpose. Femi Cole seemed tenative by comparison.

Stelter's done his brick work alright. Suddenly, I think DT has great depth & quality.

Streveler & Johannesson - I look for them to surprise us especially toward the end of the season. Streveler has deceptive speed if he can catch the ball consistently, he'll be part of a balanced attack if they can get the catching game hoing. JJ has a nose for closing in quickly on openings. These two will be unexpected headaches for opponents.

Buford looked promising at CB. Colton Beebe will be a factor. Barber, he is going to continue his family legacy. Emmit Carpenter - was he the other kicker?

We will have an interesting Fall Game Scrimmage for both players and coaches.

I would MUCH rather see these young qbs make silly mistakes now, in this game, than later. They
are much overmatched by the secondary, but that's okay. Let em make mistakes and learn. That's
what this game is about.

Agree. Croft needs to learn to move better in the pocket. Would have had a couple very nice runs though...wanted to see more from the passing game with all QB's and Still. Plenty of time to work out the bugs and issues with the new setup.

I'm been listening on KFAN. Tommy Olson is pretty good on the the air. Running game is sounding strong, that's a huge positive with all the loses they had along the OL.

The OL last year was not good, period. I would have been really disappointed if this year's didn't look better, even in the Spring. Smith looked very, very good...better than Brooks on this day, who looked good as well. Johannesson has the raw talent and impressed...but man, those fumbles were fairly routine hits. No worries with the run game.

Well, we know Lingen, Still, and Carter can catch, and Wolitarsky is semi-reliable with some notorious drops. Does Holland have the yips, or just not have it?

I'm intrigued by Streveler at WR.

Yeah, Steveler could be kind of a wildcard type of threat. Really can see him in an h-back role lining up all over the field to get and create mis-matches for others. Also tough kid not afraid to block hard.

From what I saw Holland caught the only pass that looked difficult.

Anyone think Rhoda is closer to earning a scholly after this? Thought he looked pretty good. Or was it the D more than anything?

He did look the best today for the QB's. D was good all game, so he did show he has learned the new set up better than his counterparts.

Still didn't dress.

Vincent Calhoun looks like he will be a good one, he looked good next to Pirsig.

Rewatching the first half in regards to mobility and pass pro 78 Wright looks to be a major upgrade at left tackle. 76 Calhoun looks good. 74 Connelly looks pretty good as a backup this year. Who has the inside track on backup along the interior?

The starting line looks pretty impressive. I believe Claeyes was paraphrased as saying this is our best team in his 6 years. Whether that's coach talk or his real belief is always open to question but with a good line, a senior QB, really good RBs, a mauler in 44 Beebe, and a healthy D line and talented young guys at LB and DB my optimism meter is running at an all-time high for this coming season.

Just to clarify the quoted, 28 Femi-Cole had the fumbles.

Femi Cole seems to run, differently. Not sure how to describe it. Not compact maybe? He maybe one that will need another year or two, but could be a stud as Senior.

Seemed like a long strider in traffic and a little off balance or out of control. Backs like Brooks, Toby Gerhart (maybe our JJ) have an uncanny internal gyroscope and ability to absorb and shake off hits that will bring down others. "Good feet". Combine that with good vision, maybe a little speed and you really have something special (the best example Barry Sanders). A good O line doesn't hurt.

Looks tentative and needs to secure the football. He appeared a lot smaller than I imagine. Still raw and needs more time, maybe a late bloomer. It took David Cobb until year three and four to really bust loose.

Yeah, definitely not writing him off at all. We need guys that step up as Juniors and Seniors to become playmakers.

Seems to me the Streveler has done absolutely everything within his ability to help this program. Would love to see him have a huge year as the #1 receiver and get a shot at the NFL like Gray has done.

Not sure comparing CS5 and MG5 is fair. Chris doesn't have the size or athleticism that Gray did/does. Gray was an NFL prospect from day 1. Although I love Chris, he just isn't.

This needs to be maroon vs. white next year. Those gold jerseys are useless when you're trying to figure out who a lot of players are.

Glad to see I wasn't the only person annoyed by the Gold Jerseys with Minnesota no the back as opposed to players names. With all the new faces and guys in different numbers it would have been nice to have the names on the back to make it easier to identify the players.

The game itself was pretty dull but any football is good football at this time of year. The good thing is that based on that game, especially on offense, I don't think we will have a lot of the crazy calls for player X to play because they lit it up in the spring game. If anything the play of the QB's helped Mitch out because they both looked quite a bit behind where he is at currently.

32 with windchill. Why do we always have such crap weather for this game every year.
Mother Nature has trust issues with the Gophers?

Think I heard the reasoning behind the gold jerseys is the allowed the players to keep the maroon ones from the bowl game and the new jerseys were not in yet.

That would make sense. I am sure it was something that was way down on the list of priorities but would have been nice from a fan standpoint especially with the rosters mixed and lots of different guys playing together. Maybe they could have put one team in Anthracite (still can't believe that is one of our colors now) and had the QB's wear gold instead.

Streveler isn't as tall, but he has more bulk and is arguably more athletic than MG. isn't he one of the fastest guys on the team? Gray never seemed nearly as fast.

IF - and that's a big if - Streveler can show some ability as a WR, I could see him maybe getting a free-agent invite to camp and sticking with someone as a special teams guy, based on athleticism. But, that's assuming he wants to go that route.

ummm, no.

Gray was pretty athletic and had about an inch and 30 pounds on Streveler by the time he hit the combine. He wasn't as athletic as Devondre Campbell, a similar size athlete. His numbers were ok but his vertical was piss poor if I remember. He did have a bad ankle injury that year that probably affected training leading up to the combine.

Re: this guy Streveler; Strevelers unique stutter step movement style, I think someone called it the Icky shuffle, is something I really hope to see more of because its simply bizarre and something we don't get to see every day. That leaping catch across the middle on the spring game was clutch, but the bad drop wasn't. He's probably faster than Gray, but as far as overall athleticism, body control, etc I don't know. Can he make the transition?

Can he play pass catching TE? Is he big enough to come up off the line or no?

loved how we looked on saturday, minus the turnovers, but then i was happy about the d! the staff has done a great job. i'm fired up already for the season!!

Agree with all of this. Strevy is definitely a more explosive and faster runner than Gray but Gray was very smooth in his movements which made him seem faster than he was.

Thanks...realized the fumble mix-up after reading some more posts. I'll conveniently blame the gold tops...

Given that Streveler isn't one of the top 6 WRs on a team that is average at best at the position and has barely ever played a snap at the position in an actual game, I'd say any NFL talk is a bit premature.
