GAME #30: Gophers (18-11, 7-9) @ #16 Michigan (20-7, 12-3) [BTN, 5:00PM]

I'd really like to see D'dre get in someone's grill on D and stay there. You'd think a guy with that much quickness would be able to give a ball handler fits and stick to his guy's chest like glue; instead he's always a few feet off of the ball, and loses his man often.

If you're calling out little dre for his defense then you better call everyone else out on the team for not sticking with their guy. IMO Little D sticks with his guy better than anyone on the team except McNeil & Austin Hollins

this board is too paranoid with regards to the media but the play by play guy had to wearing a Michigan jersey. His tone was rather obvious.

Another candidate for understatement of the year.

You do realize that while everyone's disappointed, it's really only you who is attacking EE and King after the game. Not sure what your point is, but if Mo could have defended or rebounded better, and didn't lower his shoulder into Morgan twice, then perhaps he could have led the team to victory. He was no world beater out there. As for King, nobody else on the team at his position outplayed him, either. Buggs showed a few nice things, but got completely owned at the end of the 1st half when the game was virtually decided.

Disagree completely... Everyone attacked King all game on this board and now after. He is absolutely dreadful out there.

Tough game tonight. As it's been for a month, the game that stings is NW. What we'd give to give Mo another chance at that shot. Or the ref another chance to blow his whistle. We're officially out of chances ot really 'make up for it.'

Why do people keep saying he looks "lost"? If he's lost, I want to know what we should call whatever King is.... nonexistant perhaps?

Lost as in not knowing where to be and what to do on both ends of the court.

The refs called a good game but I thought they called two really weird calls on us. The Buggs offensive foul was just nothing and had nothing to do with anything happening and the Eliason foul on the free throw line was the exact move you do everytime, put the arm bar out, but Morgan flopped on it and the ref bit.

good to see the team with some fight. the 2nd half could have got out of hand.

probably have to win the next 2 games to get in the tourney and with the way this team plays games at road/neutral sites the BTT game will be rather difficult to get a must win

Michigan is overrated? Michigan is about to win the what is considered the strongest or 2nd strongest conference in the country.

Yep. Watch them get their asses bounced early in March. What do they have? GRIII who plays at about 25% of his ability (SOME of the time). Stauskas who can shoot and pull up going right only. Lavert is OK. Albrecht is scrappy garbage. Morgan is solid but other than that they have nothing inside. This isn't a good team and their season will be over soon.

Beilein is a great coach. I'll give them that. They don't even have McGary.

WHat about allowing Malik to jack up shots from the parking lot and sticking with him for a decent amount of time after them? What about playing Joey King and EE when neither of them did anything at the end of the game? Why not go with buggs? Also, we were completely stagnant on offense to end the second half of the first half (haha) and needed something in terms of offensive schemes to make something happen.

I think Buggs has a huge ceiling, but he still took only one shot (correct me if I'm wrong, haven't looked at the box score) when he played. I just think pitino has him on a freshman leash for various reasons, and is more comfortable with king's contributions (which are regressing quickly?). I get the sense that coach wants the offense to get points through the dre's being over aggressive, not freshman creating offense. Maybe you are right and that there is a scheme that could be better.

And to be utterly hypocritical, Malik's pt is inexcusable :)

I feel like we have yet to pull out a game that's up for grabs at the end. Mich, @MSU, @Neb, NW, @Purdue... We get just one of those wins and we would almost be a lock for the tourney.

If this board is right about King and Buggs is the player that everybody is so infatuated with, what does that make Pitino -- incompetent?

Way too hard on King and way too early to put Buggs on this pedestal...

Yeah, that's what happened last year too

Pretty decent 2nd half to give us a chance to win in the end but could never quite get over the hump. A couple key plays that really hurt imo were Mo being called for the charge on the flop from Morgan when the Gophers were down 4 I believe and Andre's quick missed 3 and then Michigan went down and got the alley hoop. Stauskas is the key for this Michigan team and really makes everything go and after watching him kind of struggle against Purdue on Wednesday I was hoping we could limit him but felt he would have a real good game and I think he did. Really thought EE and Mo got hit with some very weak offensive foul calls today because of the job Morgan and Horford did flopping but I guess if the refs are gonna call it its smart of them to take advantage of it. Got a week to get ready to beat Penn State at home in a game we absolutely need to win.

This.

The bold statement is probably correct (but I'd argue EE does his job on D, too); and is a big reason why the Gophers' D is not good this season. If Lil D'Dre can be considered "sticking" with his guy as many 3's as he gives up, and few are better on the team, it's little wonder every team lights us up from 3 land.

Particularly when EE is in the game to clog up the middle, I don't understand why the guards don't stay outside.

the turn against Buggs will come just as quick

The refs really did call a fair game, the only one I thought was an obvious bad call was the one against EE on the FT board. That was a WTF moment, and took away from an otherwise well-reffed game.

I agree that maybe I'm too infatuated with Buggs... But I disagree on being too hard on King. He's awful on both ends of the court. If I have to watch him 1) call for the ball in the post then get it & 2) take 2 stupid back-down dribbles and 3) pick up the ball only to almost travel and 4) have to off balance kick the ball up to where it started I'll... I'll... I'll do something bad like drink 10 beers really fast so I don't have to think about how awful he is.

Already been put there. Time to put him back down on earth........at least a notch or two below Michael Jordan.

Totally agree... Stop sagging off to leave good shooters open. Malik and Andre have looked pretty terrible defensive lately (andre may have a reason with being hurt and all) in this regard.

Yes, last year when they had 2 first rounders (Burke, Hardaway Jr) and another that could have been one (McGary). What an apt comparison.

They are more impressive this year with what they have accomplished to date, losing three elite talents. They are not an easy out in the tournament. For anybody.

And last year they were 12-6 in the Big Ten. Much better this year. Seems like a fine comparison to me.

King may know where to be, but he still can't make a post move, secure a rebound, or make a shot. That's why I favor Buggs over King to be the starting (and closing) power forward for us.

as an independent observer (though pulling hard for the gophers) I thought that the team battled very hard and was in a position to win. this would have been a bonus win and is all you can ask.

the problem is the northwestern loss...and maybe 1 or 2 others. so the team has to take care of business down the stretch and maybe win 1 or 2 in the BiG tourney to get in.

solid effort. I am ready to watch every game from here on out and see what happens. I think there were some positives tonight and a win would have been very unexpected.

I feel like I am on the Baylor board. Buggs has tons of talent but there were obviously some shaky moments first half defensively and awareness wise. Charles is certainly a better athlete, but King looks more confident and is more experienced.

Pitino will figure it out and hopefully the team will go on a run. Both have a role. everything doesnt have to be a huge message board debate...I dont think

this is the most engaged I have been in a game by far and I enjoyed watching. every game from here out is huge.

Do I wish Buggs was in? Yes.

Inexcusable for a coach to play his starting PF at the end of the game for a bench player who has seen significant action in one other big ten game? No, and definitely not for a discussion board to decide.

Pitino has started Oto at the PF position this year too. Why? He doesn't know who the better option is. Look at the stat line from this game and tell me what King did in double the time......and then tell me that this was the right move.

Why do people keep saying he looks "lost"? If he's lost, I want to know what we should call whatever King is.... nonexistant perhaps?

How ill informed are you? King is a our third best offensive player, easily. And he's also our second most consistent offensive player. He shoots fairly well, and depending on the match-up he's decent with his back to the basket. Buggs has one good game (and Oto stops playing) and suddenly everyone shifts from "Oto sucks" to "King sucks". Give King **** for his terrible defense and his incredibly poor rebounding, but don't be a moron and insult him for the only thing he actually contributes in.

Then again, you're the guy who thinks having either Mo or EE transfer after this year is a net positive, so maybe I shouldn't expect much from you.
