GAME #27: Gophers (17-9, 6-7) v. Illinois (14-12, 3-10) [BTN, 2/19, 8:00PM]

GV - I was referring to our opponents. That the Gophers shoot a lot of 3's and make a lot of 3's was part of Pitino's gameplan when he came here as a coach; so to see that our B1G opponents are beating us there remains disheartening.
I know. I gave you the numbers showing before this game, we are pretty much even with our opponents. Less than 1 3PTM difference and pretty much the same percentage. Our opponents have shot more threes than us too.

With that said, we still give up too many open looks. The disparity isn't what it seems though.

The ONLY Gopher who regularly boxes out the opponent is EE. I'm not sure if the rest of the team ever learned the fundamentals of defensive rebounding, but I'd like Mr. Pitino to begin emphasizing/re-teaching it.

Tubby's D did the same and we saw where that got his teams. I thought Rich would force guarding of the 3 point line better, but so far the improvement over the Tubby-doubling schemes is marginal at best; and the team is worse at rebounding so overall the D is worse too. At least the offense is better...

The rebounding disadvantage I think is highly attributable to the players we lost. That said, despite his lack of success here, Tubby is a good coach. I don't know if it's fair to say, "our new coach isn't beating a HOF coach across the board... what's wrong!?" That's not to say your points aren't legitimate, but, this is year 1.

Ok. Keep banging it inside, there's a lid on the rim tonight.

The passing is just ugly. We don't have one guy to trust with the ball tonight.

Eliason's hustle after his miss earned us a tie up and two points. just trying to stay positive y'all B)

You know things are getting bad when a freshman is smack-talking Malik Smith and can get away with it because he is completely DOMINATING him.

If we lose this game, we don't deserve a tournament bid.

Gut check. Season on the line right now. Get Malik out of there.

This is almost worse than the Tubby offense

Malik Smith comes in, bricks a long 3 and gives up 2 open looks to guy who is on fire tonight. He absolutely kills us when he's not making shots, because it affects his defense too.

Well, we found tonight's opposing team's unnecessary Supergod (Nunn)...

Can't win this game with EE unable to score, Mo unable to play D, Malik unable to shoot, DeAndre unable to penetrate, and no one else able to create their own shot with Illinois doing simple rub-off screens to pop 3's at insane rates.

This looks like Tubby's offense. No driving, little movement, only passing around the parameter...

+1 he's been pretty detrimental lately. I wonder what his +/- per minute is?

I can't imagine seeing Malik Smith on the court for the rest of this game. Poor shot selection and terrible defense. Enjoy the pines and cheer your teammates on, Malik!

With the wide open looks they are getting from 3, I feel like Dr. Don could be draining them at a 50% clip.

God I'm glad we don't have BTN in our hotel...flying to Maui in the morning!
