Game #2: Gophers v. Montana (11/12, All-Access, 7:00PM)

Please learn how to use spacing, periods, and complete sentences. It would be a lot easier to read your posts.

You seem to be a little grumpy tonight MG, although I agree.

Thoughts on the game:
Hollins X2 still very good
little Dre quick & good
Oto & EE appear to be much better
Malik Smith needs to get much better

King - Keep your head up and realize you have Hollins x 2 on your team. I know everyone loves him, but he needs to stop looking strictly to shoot & needs to start passing & playing D.

Malik needs

Malik Smith needs to improve, in the next couple of weeks. EE still can't make more than 50% of his FT's. The press was impressive. Austin and Andre will have to carry this team. Deandre is a MAJOR improvement at the point. Should be an interesting year, but I doubt that they will be in the NCAA/March Madness unless they find a way to rebound on both ends of the court.

Everyone has the rebounding concerns, but they dominated the glass tonight. I just don't get the timing of these comments.

Mostly because Montana was overmatched and that will not always be the case.

That's true, but I think Pitino has really hammered to the team that everyone is going to have to be a good rebounder. That is why we saw Austin get double digit boards tonight. Rebounding will be a team effort this year without Mbakwe, Ingram, and Rodney.

You and me both, GV. That is why I have so much fun here on GH, and catch hell for it. We outrebound Montana 45-29 is a problem.

Just looking to the future Gold Vision. Don't see much strength under the boards at this point, knowing what teams are on the schedule.

Yeah, I know it was definitely the concern running into the season, just like what I've seen so far. We haven't played a team with pulse on the glass yet though.

True - let's see when we play out in Maui - we will know much more about this team then. Hope I'm wrong. Really looking forward to this team playing the season out though.. It's an important year for the program.

Best stat of the night, only 7 TOs

That is one ailment from last year that Pitino has seemed to cure. We have been very good in the turnover department every game, which is even more impressive considering our new fast paced system.

Tonight was my first game of the season. A few observations:

1. The team won't be very good this year but I love Pitino's system. Tubby's "motion free" offense is becoming a distant memory;
2. The players look to be in excellent shape;
3. King and Smith don't look like B1G players. Under normal circumstances they wouldn't be here. I don't see the King/Rychart comparisons other than they are both white, about the same size and they have short black hair. Rychart was a very good rebounder, passer and defender. I haven't seen those skills in King.
4. Mathieu is really fun to watch but he will struggle in the B1G when the guards are bigger and just abut as quick. Dre Hollins will play more point in the B1G season.
5. Both Hollins look really good. The mediocre recruiting class is going to hurt because there won't be anyone to replace Austin next year.
6. Otto has exponentially more confidence than last year. It's fun to see.
7. Eliason is becoming a leader. Mo's transgression was a big step backward.
8. The team won't win more than six or seven games in the B1G but they will upset a couple of top teams at home and those are the games that we will remember.
9. The players work much harder than under Tubby.
10. Pitino will win the B1G title in the next 2-3 years.

Dre Mathieu looks out of control to me at times, not sure if he actually is or if he's just really fast and stays under control... Seems like it could lead to some turnovers in B10 play

He reminds a little bit of Nolen. Can get to the rim quick, he just doesn't quite have that finisher's touch yet. He is the quick ball handler this team needs though.

Mathieu is huge to this team. As they continue to grow, he's going to get the Hollins boys tons of open looks. In terms of guards we can compete with anybody. The key is competing on the glass. This will be a very interesting year- one in which we really have no clue how this all works out. A lot of the tentativeness of years past is gone and these guys are having some fun and that is great to watch.

Wow you sure came to a lot of impressive conclusions based on watching one game. We really must be a garbage team if King led us in scoring with 20 points off the bench last game. But I guess you wouldn't even be aware of that performance...

1. Too early to tell (haven't seen how good Mo will be)
2. Agree
3. Totally Agree with Malik King still need time.
4. Not so sure, Mathieu is a competitor
5. Agree with first part, Morris could replace Austin to some extent though
6. Agree

Yeah, Mathieu's speed and ability to get in to the lane is going to open up a lot of shots, for the Hollins bros as well as our other shooters like Oto, King, and Mav. He may become our most important player towards the end of the season. We really don't have anyone else on the roster like him.

I disagree about Joey. He's only a Sophomore and he has a nice offensive game. He obviously needs to get stronger and improve his defense greatly, but his offense IMO, is Big Ten worthy.

I was working and caught part of the game on the radio. My favorite moment:
Late in the 1st half, Spencer Tollackson said (referring to Eliason): "Elliot has played really well all season."

.........All Season?............It's the 2nd freakin' game of the year..............gimme a break. And then Mike Grimm started complaining about the officiating, and I couldn't take it any longer, so I went back to work. Grimm isn't a bad play-by-play guy, but I get so sick of him complaining every time a call goes against the Gophers.

How do redshirts work in college basketball? Can you play some games and still get a redshirt? Or does this mean we won't be reshirting McNeil?

A redshirt is a description, not a 'thing'. Same as others sports - that is, a "redshirt" describes a player who doesn't play at all in a season.

In basketball, that means a second. You step on the floor, you can no longer be a redshirt.

8 turnovers tonight so that's about a 12% turnover rate for the Gophers. That'll work. But a couple of things on defense that could have been better.

Rebounding and the shooting advantage (7+ percent better eFG% for Minnesota) won the game.

Austin can play. Great game from him.

Go Gophers!!

Other than Austin and Dre (H.), team was 8/25 2FG (32%). Montana shot 50% 2FG.

Fairly dominant performance tonight but those 2FG% numbers won't work in the future. Eliason and Mathieu both 2/7 2FG.

Even with Mo back, I think Eliason gets a lot of minutes - so valuable in altering shots. Yes, 5 credited blocks tonight, but he changes & messes with the minds of the opposing offensive players just by being out there and active on the floor. He may need to be a 25-28 minute guy in conference.

I thought the team started puking on themselves a little bit in the second half.. lackadaisical.. but they woke back up and marched on pretty quickly.. good to see them fight off a run with one of their own, even while leading by a good margin.

Always enjoy seeing your posts Jamiche, I agree with a lot of your observations so far.

1. Agreed, the competition hasn't been great but it's refreshing to see guys moving and taking the open shot when it's presented to them.
2. Harder to tell from the computer, but Elliott is moving much better and Mav is much leaner.
3. I agree with this, but I do think King has some of the inside "craftyness" that Rychart possessed. He's missing the other attributes. I think he can play a role.
4. I've noticed a few instances where Mathieu's size was a detriment in the first two games, so I expect it to be more of an issue as well. The plus side is he's a solid ball handler and should still be able to create some.
5. Agreed and we didn't have anyone to replace Trevor this year. We need an elite recruiting class soon, hope Rashad comes back home.
6. I've noticed this as well, I think Oto was one of the guys who was intimidated by Tubby and it affected his game.
7. Would love to see Eliason tone down the antics a bit, but he's been very good alerting shots and rebounding. Mo needs the playing time he's missing.
8. Your prediction was my fear going in to the year. I am not sure teams 4-7 in the B1G will be as strong this year, so I still hold out hope for 9 wins and dancing.
9. I thought the guys worked really hard for Tubby, especially in his first few years, I trust your opinion from the seats though. That's a good sign.
10. I am pretty encouraged with what I have seen on the court from both a strategy and a team response perspective, but teams like Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois are bringing in elite talent. We've got to start hitting a few home runs on the recruiting trail to make your prediction a reality.

I would assume Mo Walker would help with the 2FG%, but what else (besides just shooting better) do you think the Gophers can do to improve this number? Eliason just doesn't have great touch and we are going to be outmatched physically at the 4 for much of the year which likely means contested 2fga's for Oto/Joey. Obviously, getting some easy buckets in transition would improve 2FG%, but the press didn't lead to many easy opportunities tonight.

King is definitely B10 material. He's only two games in, and he's shown he can find ways to score. He does have to work on his defense and rebounding, but he will be the 6th man, and or soon to be the starter. Oto probably is the starter because of his defense, but as you can see, King will get more minutes. I really think King will be the one to go to when Hollins^2 is off on their shooting.

I may have taken a sip or two of kool aid on the B1G title prediction in 2-3 years because, as you said, he's got to get some talent in here. My "out on a limbness" was based on that he looks like an engaged coach who has a team that responds to him. But, talent. Yes, talent.

Eliason has toned it down quite a bit. He only whined a couple of times last night as opposed to every play that didn't go his way last year.

Mav has hit the weights hard. The pace of play slowed noticeably when he replaced Mathieu last night, which may not be a bad thing as long as the ball keeps moving.

Your comments about King after watching him in one game are a bit unfair. He has looked very good in two games and below average in two games. He will contribute, but at this point is certainly not consistent. Malik Smith makes me nervous. He is supposed to be the one that understands the offense and quite often, he apppears to be totally confused. His shot selection is very questionable. Mo will be missed the while he is out. He should give Elliot a needed break when he returns. It was good to see Wally get a few minutes last night. He looked more comfortable, the more he played. Buggs has the athleticism, but at this point doesn't know how to use it. He has a chance to be very good in a couple of years if he figures it out.
