For those inclined to fret about Gophers' chances on Selection Sunday?

I think they are in. With that being said, who the committee matches them up with will give true insight into the committee and their views of the program. These members know basketball and teams style of play, they put teams in challenging positions as well as placing them against favorable match ups. With so many B1G teams set to get bids, how are they going to position all of them? Does anyone know who is the chair of the NCAA committee? I want the Gophers to be in and win. This Minnesota winter has gone on far too long, we need some more fun. More snow to come.

Right now, they are probably in the last 4 in...Iowa's loss (They wuz Robbed) and Akron surviving really helped the Committee keep the Mac a 1 bid conference. But I would still not be surprised if the committee throw out their stated criteria on the basis of the "eye test" and losing 11 of their last 16...And not breaking 55 in 80% of their road games. I think there will be a lot of people on the committee who are very reiticent to include a team that has lost 11 of their past 16. They are probably rooting for Ohio to upset Akron tonight. Or Rooting for Vandy.

Vandy and Ole Miss being alive in the SEC could also be a threat to steal bids.

The extra 4 at-large bids may wind up being the difference. But if there's a strong and charasmatic figure in the committee who lobbies hard against the Gophers, it would be hard to dispute the "eye test" arguement. There may not be enough solid wins by other teams on the bubble at this point.

Teams losing in their conference tourney that may steal bids:

LA Tech
Midd Tenn St.
Kentucky
Cal
Boise St.

Others who could steal bids: Akron, OleMiss, Tenn, Bama, Maryland.

The committee could come out and say, "With Minnesota, they had some nice wins but too many bad losses on the road and they just didn't pass the eye test." Nobody here should complain or be surprised if that happens.

The problem with your argument is you're not looking at the other teams that you feel could get in ahead of the Gophers. LA Tech has three top 100 wins all year and just lost to TX-San Antonio. Prior to that, TX-San Antonio's best win was over a team ranked 196th. Midd TN ST has one top 100 win and just lost to a bad Florida Int. team. Kentucky just lost to Vandy (I still think they get in though). California just lost to Utah. I think Boise St. has a shot to get in.

The fact is, the things you are saying about the Gophers can be said about a bunch of these teams as well.

For clarity, here are the 20 teams I evaluated the Gophers with. Keep in mind, some of these are easily in the field (like the Gophers), while some others have no chance in h*ll of receiving an at-large bid:

Alabama
Baylor
Boise State
Cal
Charlotte
Iowa
Iowa State
Kentucky
LaSalle
Maryland
Middle Tennessee
Oklahoma
Ole Miss
Oregon
Saint Mary's
Southern Miss
Tennessee
UMass
Villanova
Virginia

Of those teams only about 3 or 4 are clearly out. I'd say Charlotte blew their chance last night. Baylor too. The rest are all capable of being put in.

None of those teams will have lost 11 of their last 16 and pissed away 15 to 21 turnovers in their last few games like the Gophers. The "Eye Test" is the committee's loophole to banish a team like Minnesota who started hot and finished terribly.

Strength of schedule more of a subset of RPI rather than a get in the tourney card.

The committee thinks differently. If they get in, they deserve it.

The NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL and college football count all games equally. But they all do it wrong. The last 10 should be the main criteria. The T-Wolves would still have a chance!

Agree.

I use nonconference SOS as an elimination thing more than anything. When it gets down to the last couple teams, usually (but not always) I'll eliminate teams with horrid nonconference SOS ranks (i.e Iowa, Maryland, Virginia, all in the 300s).

i love how some of you wanna-be "journalists" and devil's advocate types sit here and try to convince over and over some of us gopher FANS (i.e. shorts for fanatics) that we should somehow agree with you that the gophers don't deserve to be and/or shouldn't be in the NCAA tourney.

we are gopher FANS........FANATICS.....we want to see our team in the NCAA tourney.......regardless of your supposed self-ascribed superior level of objectivity and what you may think of that fact and those beliefs.

said another way......please GET BENT and MOVE ON to something else already. we are FANS.....we are not attempting to be objective. honestly....

Do any of the professional leagues have 300+ teams?

seriously!

I'm sure you're confused. You've confused being a fan with being a homer.

We all would like to see our team in the tournament. The argument isn't "do you want to see the team play in the tournament", but instead it is whether the team is a lock to get into the tournament. On the latter, I claim that they should not be considered a lock based upon the teams play. If you can't differentiate between the two, then yes, you are confused.

If nothing else, it's just sad that we even have to have this discussion the day prior to Selection Sunday.

We haven't seen the tourney in 2 years, it certainly beats the alternative. Regardless of your thoughts on the coach, the next couple weeks will be fun. Leave the off season for speculation.

I ask you again, who has ever got an invite by going 5-11 in their last 16? Anyone?

Oh, I agree whole-heartedly. I absolutely want to see the Gophers make the tourney for no other reason that I haven't had a real rooting interest in the tourney (other than my bracket picks) for much of the past 12 years. Even with our recent tourney appearances, it felt like we were long-shots to get a win in the first (or now second...whatever) round, much less make the second weekend. With this team, I have no idea which team will show up...which makes it half entertaining, half infuriating...aka being a fan. We could make a strong run or we could be blown out the first game...either way, I'll be watching!

SS is right on. If the Gophers had lost 72 -41 to the Illini, however, I think we would have had more to worry about. Welcome to 9, 10, or 11 seed land. (It will be fun tomorrow night to assess the match-up, let's enjoy it for what it will have to offer).

When was it clear to the Board we wouldn't be playing on Saturday in the B1G T? To me it was after the NE loss. Losing on a neutral floor not a good foreshadow for the dance performance. But a solid dose of revitalized emotion/motivation goes a long way. TBD.

Here's what I think right now...(Subject to change with results in the next 30 hours.

NO chance for a 9 seed.

2% chance for a 10.

25% chance for a 11.

30 % chance for a safe 12.

20% chance for play in game.

23% chance for snub.

While a weekend appearance in the BTT was probably a long shot, it would've been nice to get at least one win just to get that bad taste out of our mouths...but maybe a week off until the tourney (assuming we make it), will give the team a chance for a "come to Jesus" meeting or something...

how can one really be a true FANATIC of a team and not be a bit of a homer? to me that is not a fan (i.e. fanatic). that is just someone who likes watching sports and hopes the team they associate themselves at times does well.

I'd love to see this team win the NCAA tournament (if they can somehow back in). At the same time I'd love to see the Gophers with a new coach immediately afterwards so that we can build a sustainable program for the foreseeable future. Fans can criticize their team and still be fans. You seem to be confused on that.

no, i am not. wasn't commenting on some criticizing the team for the sake of criticizing them. the point i was trying to make was for some to stop incessantly trying to "convince" others that they need to be completely subjective and should not really instill and type of self-interest (i.e. homerism) into their thought process.

tinyarch and moses, your entire vendettas in several threads are and have been, "I hope the Gophers lose so we can get rid of Tubby." You are not fans, you are an anti-Tubby. Pure and simple. Stop pissing into the wind and telling us it warms you up.

i like that one. one of your better puns as of late.

Well of course not because the Gophers didn't get to play such powerhouses like Texas St., TX-San Antonio, Idaho, Seattle, San Jose St. in their conference. These five teams combined to go 48-104 this year and this was five teams LA Tech played in a row in conference play. The "eye test" for me says they played a ton of games against some of the worst teams in all of Division 1. The "eye test" also allows the committee to "banish a team" for playing in an absolutely horrible conference and not winning it.

Your problem is you're looking at the downfalls of the Gophers and disregarding those of the others.

To be fair, teams like Nebraska, Purdue, Northwestern, and Iowa aren't exactly a murderer's row of Big Ten teams. Those losses do hurt. How much they hurt remains to be seen.

I think they get in but whatever the seed is, I think the committee rewards them for there steller performance since mid January, probably an impossible first roung matchup and a suicide bracket.
