Five Guys On A Shortlist: If the U Decides Change Is Needed, Aim High & Don't Be Cheap With That Big Ten Cash

My Revised Top 10 with Anthony Grant supposedly retiring. (after obligatory calls to Dutcher and Musselman).

1. Darian DeVries-WVU-Probably a reach especially if Iowa opens.

2. Chris Mack-Charleston

3. Ben McCollum-Drake

4. Kyle Smith-Stanford. Also a reach to get a guy to leave after one year. But Stanford in the ACC has to suck.

5. Niko Medved-CSU

6. Leon Rice-Boise

7. Andy Enfield-SMU. Same as Kyle Smith

8. Ryan Odom-VCU

9. Sundance Wicks-Wyoming

10. Steve Smiley-Northern Colorado
Why no on the job training candidates?

Nice list. I would only swap out Jans (who isn't going to leave a good SEC team) with Ryan Odom. Shocked Uva as a 16, nice job at Utah St, now has vcu atop the A10. Seems like a logical step.
Odom has chosen his jobs well. Both Utah State and VCU have excellent traditions and administrative support. We’re zero for two on those important issues.

Pretty deep reach there, Bad. Not Johnson
level reach Northeast Conference to Big Ten is a mighty jump.
Perhaps, but I predict his next job will be at a high major.
Maryland HC was at Iona and then Seton Hall.
Iowa State HC was at South Dakota State and then UNLV.

Probably needs one middle stepping stone, but you could be right
McCaffrey went from Siena to Iowa IIRC (if I'm not, I hope someone here will let me know)

McCafftey did come Sienna, but that is MAAC which is a step or two up on the food chain from NEC. Also more sustained success than the Central Connecticut guy has, I think.

I don't know if this is real/accurate but if so, it says that Shaka Smart's salary is only about $200,000 more that CBJ??? If so, double Shaka's salary and get him to Dinkytown ASAP.

I believe we tried that once he bypassed the U and flew down to Texas that’s why we ended up with Patino.

Because of that, he's the one big name I think the Gophers could actually have a tiny chance at. Probably only a 1% chance, but it's worth a call to find out.

Notice many of the coaches at highly successful private schools and what they 'supposedly' make.

Those schools don't have to "report" anything and are not subject to open record requests to release contract details.

Many of these private schools create "booster clubs" that supplement the coach's income, sometimes doubling it from what is reported the school is paying. Sometimes the same happens at public schools, but they have to disclose the total amount on request from media agencies. Private ones generally do not.

Like with all of their success, do we really believe that Mark Few has stayed at Gonzaga all these years to make less than $3 million per year? Or, that Shaka Smart is only making $2.2 million at Marquette after making almost $4 million at Texas and leaving on his own with 2 years left on his Longhorn deal and a nearly $8 million buyout if Texas fired him? Or, Greg McDermott turned down Ohio State twice to "settle" for $2.3 million at Creighton?

Nope, they are all making way more than that.

I think people would be surprised at how low the yearly donor amounts to sports are at places like Creighton and Marquette.

Marquette has one of the largest basketball budgets in the country, at one time only 2nd to Duke, not sure where they rank now.

Supposedly Steve Pikiell's seat is "hot" at Rutgers. Not sure where to put him on the list. He'd have been a no-brainer two years ago. I'd still take him. i think Rutgers is an even tougher job than Minnesota.

He's an elite recruiter and less than mediocre coach. Idk I think we need a coach over recruiter. (Obviously you need both, but if I were picking a strength I'd pick coaching, look at Wiscy's success and how Bo Ryan built them, starts with coaching, leads to recruiting).

Kyle Smith & Muss if they truly hate the west coast disadvantage

the top 3 are slim to none odds but there are plenty of options out there better than buddy Ben

Scoggins has an article this morning in STrib that Coyle wants to invest in MBB.

Scoggins: Word is Mark Coyle wants to build Gophers men’s basketball. What does it mean for Ben Johnson?

People connected to the University of Minnesota say the athletic director wants to invest in the program. Does the coach get to come along?

McCafftey did come Sienna, but that is MAAC which is a step or two up on the food chain from NEC. Also more sustained success than the Central Connecticut guy has, I think.
Nate Oats went right from Buffalo to Alabama. It's not too exceedingly uncommon.

You don’t build a growth portfolio on penny stocks.

I like this list! I'm a huge fan of Hodgson. Will Wade is my number 1 choice but I like what he's done at Arkansas State. He's from the Nate Oats coaching tree

Buffalo is in the MAC, which is a several steps up from the MAAC and even more steps up from the NEC.

Many Big Ten and high major coaches have come from the MAC over the years.

Not very many have come from the MAAC, as McCaffery did at Iowa. (I think that was the poster's point)

Hey our guy with a team that only shoots 3 and dunks/layups is available!

18. Bryan Hodgson, Arkansas State Red Wolves

Hodgson seems well-suited for the modern era of college basketball, excelling at stockpiling talent in the transfer portal. He was an assistant under Nate Oats at Alabama for four seasons, and he has carried over some of the same offensive principles: pace and shooting 3s. Arkansas State made a run to the league title game last season and won a share of the regular-season title this season, also notching a road win at Memphis in December.

The Pitino stat of making the tournament for the Gophers 2 out of 3 total times over the last 15 years is misleading. He coached here for 8 years. 4 of those other years have been coached by the worst coach in our history. The other 3 years were by Tubby Smith who was battling cancer for 2 of those years.

Overall, good article and like a lot of the names on that list. Any would be better than what we have now. I will say I am opening up more to Niko Medved but Will Wade and McCollum are still ahead of him for me.
