Five Guys On A Shortlist: If the U Decides Change Is Needed, Aim High & Don't Be Cheap With That Big Ten Cash

Got fed up but now has a year off to miss it. It's all he's ever known. Coming back happens more often than not.
Plus if he wants to come back, I think it will be at a lower pressure gig without huge NIL/huge expectations. He can go 11-9 here and make the NCAA tournament and we'll throw him a parade. He can even lose in the first round the first couple times, as he's known to do.

Rick Pitino
Jim Calhoun
Rick Majerus
Bobby Knight
Jerry Tarkanian
Larry Brown

to name a few
Majerus and Larry Brown certainly. I'm not sure Pitino ever claimed to be retired, neither did Bobby Knight. And Calhoun came back to take a DIII retirement job. Not really the same thing.

Dick Bennett retired abruptly and never thought of coming back. Amost identical to what Tony did. I think the apple falls and lies right under the tree.

Holy shit, that had disappeared down my memory hole! He did! Well, that's a horse of a different color.
After time off to recover from burnout, he came back to coach a down on its luck Power 5 team that wore maroon. I think this all but confirms Tony Bennett to the Gophers...

Saw that the Iowa State coach signed an extension that has a buyout of $4M and it’s cut in half if the AD is no longer the AD.

That certainly would be the most Minnesotan thing ever after earning the #1 overall seed. I bet we’ll come up with a catchy song to the Final 4 location too. We’re goin’ to Miami!

Wow you are aiming high on 3 of those names, I love the moxie. I don’t think Coyle has it in him to snag a hire like that. But both CSU and Drake coaches would be big upgrade on the sidelines for us.
Really?

No they literally cant.

You think Greg McDermott after going to 3 sweet 16s in 4 years is chilling at Creighton because they cant pay him and he wants a worthy offer from Minnesota???
For close to double his current salary and be in the B1G? No brainier to me. He can bring players with him and instantly make an impact.

McDermott just signed a 5 year extension last year, making him one of the highest paid coaches in the Big East. Creighton also has significantly more NIL money to spend than the Gophers do. He's not even a remotely realistic candidate for the job.

Exactly how does Creighton have more money to pay the basketball players? Exactly how?

He has already turned down the Ohio State job a few years ago and they have exponentially more money than Minnesota. Creighton has some big money boosters whose money all goes to basketball at Creighton since no football. They have averaged top 10 in attendance nationally for many years now. He has already turned down much better jobs than the gophers. He will likely retire at Creighton with the court names for him when it is all said and done.

Creighton draws 17k+ fans for every game, amongst the national leaders in attendance every year. They have no football to take from their NIL pot of money. This is a private school that doesn't have to worry about political agendas, state lawmakers meddling, etc. They have a LOTS of money. And for athletics, it is ALL about men's basketball and nothing else. Omaha is a relatively big city with lots of money and good corporations who back the local basketball team.

This isn't your dad's mid-major Creighton from the Missouri Valley. Creighton is now a major national player. And, McDermott is amongst the highest paid coaches in the country right now.

haha huh??

The Gophers are not able to pay McDermott double what Creighton can. That is one of the more absurd things I have ever heard.
