Five Guys On A Shortlist: If the U Decides Change Is Needed, Aim High & Don't Be Cheap With That Big Ten Cash

Would anyone be happy if we go after Brian Dutcher of San Diego State. Would he step down from SDSU to go back home. I would think so.
San Diego is his home.
It's almost certainly less than 50/50 he would take the job now, but I don't think it's zero either. He sort of taken SDSU to the pinnacle already. He will likely never have a season better than he did two years ago and Utah State and the Fighting Pitino's have passed them (at least for this year). I'm not sure what the mid-term future of the Mountain West/"new Pac 12" is.

Also, though his age is a factor, does anyone care about a 5 or 7 year commitment from the coach in this era? As long as he feels up at least three years, it's worth doing. I can see him wanting to give Minnesota a shot as his closing act.

My Revised Top 10 (after obligatory calls to Dutcher and Musselman).

1. Darian DeVries-WVU-Probably a reach especially if Iowa opens.

2. Chris Mack-Charleston

3. Ben McCollum-Drake

4. Kyle Smith-Stanford. Also a reach to get a guy to leave after one year. But Stanford in the ACC has to suck.

5. Niko Medved-CSU

6. Leon Rice-Boise

7. Andy Enfield-SMU. Same as Kyle Smith

8. Anthony Grant-Dayton

9. Sundance Wicks-Wyoming

10 (tie) Johnny Tauer-St. Thomas/Steve Smiley-Northern Colorado

That's a good list. Any of those guys: as the chorus here has been singing, there's no guarantee that any of those hires would work, but I'd be satisfied that the U shot their shot and it wasn't a reach like the last two have been.

Half of the current Top 10 is coached by guys in their mid 60s or older. Sure, you'd like a young guy that can energize a dying program and light a fire, but you also need someone who definitely knows what they're doing and can put the program on a winning course.

All he does is win -- and cheat a little, ok a LOT. But most of that cheating is allowed now & all his restrictions are lifted june 2025. Go get a winner and a guy that is willing to do whatever it takes. I'll take a ton of wins, perennial NCAA's, and a couple deep runs in the tourney!

With Kash Patel moving FBI agents out of Washington to field offices across the country, he might want to send special agents with financial crimes backgrounds to Minneapolis if Wade is hired.

As long as George Dohrmann isn't sniffing around, we'll be fine!

All in on Will Wade, and if not Wade it also better not be: tauer, dutcher, Niko, lil Flip or musselman

I wonder if he will end up back at LSU.

97 happend and the banner should be hanging in the rafters - wouldn't change the Clem years for anything!

We are in a Pay to Play era & Will sure knows how to execute pay to play, especially when he doesn't need to be the one paying anymore...he is a great coach - let's pick a proven coach at the power 5 level who is also a proven winner at every level, for once. Take a chance - this is 2025, the rules have changed and change we must! Take a shot on a winner with baggage vs an unproven commodity on the cheap!

So does Fleck, and he's way more successful.
Agreed - PJ has the charisma, Ben lacks...ya need a little used car salesman in ya to compete in today's era of pay to play and recruiting.

PJ is a great fit for the U and hope he is here for the long haul.

1) Dutcher: Have to give him a call. He has stated he wanted to coach here in the past. He has shown success. If he is interested, you bring him in.
2) Will Wade: all he does is win. Would he be interested in us? No clue. Would our admin want him? No. But if we can bully the Pohlad's into selling the Twins, we can bully the university into getting our coach.
3) Chris Jans: Expensive, had an incident in 2015. But a proven commodity with Midwest ties.
4) Ben McCollum: He has gotten a ton of buzz but all he does is win. The only ? is can he win at our level. I think he can.
5) Chris Mack: Had some success at Louisville. Sure it ended poorly but I think he can get the job done.
6) Darian DeVries: can we poach a 2nd coach from West Virginia? Similar resume to Dawn P. Success at a local smaller school, to West Virginia for a year, and back here.
7) Josh Schertz: Robbie Avila
8) Niko Medved: He wouldn't create the most buzz but he'd do much better than Ben.

Nice list. I would only swap out Jans (who isn't going to leave a good SEC team) with Ryan Odom. Shocked Uva as a 16, nice job at Utah St, now has vcu atop the A10. Seems like a logical step.

No matter how many times Wade’s name is posted here (and it’s multiple times a day) it doesn’t take away that he has a show cause with the NCAA until June 22.

Go Gophers!!

Dutchers buyout is now 10.2 million. 4 years ago it was 1 million for the Gophers. That ship has sailed.

It also doesn’t take away the fact that he’s a crook. Forget him, please.

@GopherWeatherGuy Yeah I don't think Dutcher is likely anymore. But his success and history with the program still makes him my first call. Really the top 3 on my list aren't likely just who I would start with.

@leib0039 I don't think Jans is likely but I do think he is worth a call. Mississippi isn't the best place in the world, and the school is valued at less than us. Plus with Midwest ties, you never know when someone wants to return. Odom is definitely on my list but I left him out since I ran out of time writing. I may even place Odom above Medved if I look back at my list.

A couple other names to look at Leon Rice, Jerrod Calhoun, Tony Skinn, and Bryce Drew.

Randy Bennett is an interesting name. I have never heard his name brought up before, probably because he wouldn't leave St Marys. But he is 62 and has made the post season (NIT or Big Dance) every year since 2006/2007. From what I remember he has a pipeline from Australia, and I don't think that would transfer from California to Minnesota.
