Five Guys On A Shortlist: If the U Decides Change Is Needed, Aim High & Don't Be Cheap With That Big Ten Cash

I believe i read Tauer is making ~$100K.

He's not turning down the Gopher job if offered

However, he isn't getting the offer.

Where do you believe you read that? That would be good info..

I know I read an article a couple years ago that actually cited Eric Henderson of So Dak St as one of the lowest paid D1 coaches and that was at $250,000……

"Would you like a massive promotion, an 800% raise and you don't even have to move?" Eh....I'll pass.

It doesn't really make a difference because the amount Tauer makes now would be dwarfed by the amount he would make at the U. But he makes a lot more than $100,000 per year. It's a private school, so I have absolutely no idea how they structure his salary. But prior to going Division I, he was a tenured professor at St. Thomas (I don't know if he technically still is, but I don't believe he teaches classes anymore). The average salary of a tenured professor at a private college is around $200K. Prior to going D1, he was making between $250K-$300K. I'd guess he is now making between $300K-$400k (with achievable bonuses).

All of that said, he'd make 5-6 times that coaching to the U. But obviously Johnny Tauer is making more than $100K.

I don't think he would take the money to leave right now. He seems like a high character guy, invested in his faith and the UST community. The money will be there when he has the Tommies in the tourney on a regular basis.
LOL.
He's not turning down the U. Jeebus.

Ask Ben Jacobsen how that worked out. St. Thomas can have a good team and still only make the tournament once every 5 years or so. If any Summit League coach turns down a B1G job, they're nuts.

Or they could have an average team and make it every other year. I think he has a better chance at the tourney with UST than MN.

Statistically that's unlikely, but OK. Roughly 50% of B1G teams make the tournament each year. 1/12 Summit League teams do. Even if you believe they are one of elite 3/4 teams that will win the Summit each year, they likely won't make it 50% of the time. SDSU and NDSU aren't going anywhere.

John Dunne has turned Marist around and has lead them to a 16-3 record and has exceeded their win total from last year in the MAAC. They've increased their win total the last few seasons. Could be a solid coaching candidate. But my number one target is still Will Wade

Hoping the Gophs make a good hire, but I think we'll be having this Johnny Tauer convo in 4-5 years and it'll have way more steam.

He is having a very good season this year and had a fair season last year but before that he had 5 straight losing seasons at Marist. He's a very experienced head coach (19 years) but his career winning percentage is .428 (245-328) at two schools (St. Peter's and Marist). Since they are both NYC area schools, I also wonder if he has any interest in relocating.

I'm not wired this way, but you've never known anyone who didn't chase the $?

The guy is a millionaire, coaching at this alma mater, finding success leading that program from D3 to D1. There are a lot of people who would have prefer to be John Gagliardi than Jerry Kill.

Creative option that hasn't been mentioned before. Not sure on Will Wade, I'm thinking that's not a direction Coyle would go. There will be a bunch of others. I recall when Todd Golden made the jump from USF to Florida, I wasn't sure he was the best fit. Other than his off-the-court noise, he has them playing at a high level and has recruited well. I still feel fairly strongly that Coyle knows his hoops and if not squashed, will make a good hire. It was beyond a tough time when he made the last hire.

A Google search produced an average salary for a professor at St Thomas as $104,060. I was an adjunct for 16 years and prepared the tax return for one tenured professor for several years at a university in Missouri. Salaries at institutions vary widely based on the prestige of the school and the area of expertise of the professor (business school professor likely makes more than a liberal arts professor). I am skeptical he was making anywhere near $250,000 as a professor at STU.

A one off of someone loving their alma mater so much they will never leave is always possible. But I think some here think he would turn down the U because St. Thomas is a better job. It isn't.

Thank you for that. I'm not sure he would either, I thought he was at least worth mentioning. As you said, there's quite a list of qualified candidates that have been mentioned on here and also ones that haven't. That's been most of my reasoning for watching more mid-majors than I normally do. Florida is killing it this year. If you can be in the upper echelon of the SEC, you're doing something right. I think with the revenue sharing thing kicking in next year, coaches will be enticed, regardless of where we are in this year's standings. Brian Hodgson from Arkansas State is one that I've mentioned on here a few times. I watched them on the road against Memphis earlier this year, and they simply outplayed them and they played a fun style. Plus he landed that 4 star recruit from Canada we were after.

welcome aboard the Wade Train!!

How about a Pitino Part II? Don't blow a gasket without taking a peek at what he's done at his current stop. Knowing the fiasco this could set off, let me say that I'm only 1/4 serious.

He would laugh and hang up. He'll get another power 5 gig. He's not coming back to MN. But I'm sure he and Coyle remain close.

Specifically, who are the people here that have said St. Thomas would be a better job?

Some of us, myself included, have simply pointed out that, if offered, there’s a chance at this point in his career, Tauer might turn it down. Not all people jump at the first chance at more money if the timing or fit isn’t right for them. Perhaps that’s the case with Tauer, perhaps it isn’t. We may never find out, as news articles about who was offered the job before someone else took it often is conjecture/hearsay.

Personally, I hope he stays at St. Thomas. It would be a major hit to lose him with what UST has going on right now.

Wouldn't be surprised he's at Florida State with Leonard Hamilton leaving after this year. Was at FIU before us.

Now that's a very interesting prospect!

His head coaching career has been pretty short (two years) but he's been successful so far. He had a winning season last year and is having a much better one this season. Apparently, he was an Alabama assistant prior and recruited some of their top players during his time there.

He has an interesting background. Born to a teenage mother, placed in foster care due to some bad domestic stuff, and eventually adopted. Played at a NY junior college and then a small New York state university. Despite coaching for southern universities in recent years, he's a cold weather guy having spent most of his life in the cold and snowy parts of New York state.

I think it's moot whether we would want him or not (I don't) because I doubt he would return here. If he keeps performing well at UNM, he certainly could get other power conference offers if he wants them. The ACC has multiple poor performing teams now and the Big East also has a few.
