Fire Rob Wenger

What surprises me is that I would think an HC like Fleck would be a guy who doesn't want to be just average at Special Teams, but excel; to win some games with ST. That just seems like the kind of guy he is. A team known for exceptional ST.

The level of ineptitude and the lack of preparedness of the Gopher ST is just plain unacceptable for any kind of program that wants to be at a high level. Almost every week they show they are not prepared for certain situations
Let me tell you what is truly alarming. Fleck recognized there was a problem with the defense and removed Robb Smith in favor of Rossi. He’s not doing that with Wenger. This tells me that either Fleck doesn’t see special teams as a problem, or there is some deeper connection between the two gentlemen that goes beyond performance that we are not privy too.

Has to go.

That final punt coverage is disturbing to watch. Now.....it's quite possible that a couple of those guys slowed up because of the hand signaling.....but we had DeJean SURROUNDED and all four of the guys bit on a slight movement. It looked like they were being controlled by a joystick. Coleman Bryson makes an absolutely horrible play by giving up the sideline and running into our own guys on the play. Everything about it was sad, sad, sad.
They let up because DeJean called fair catch. Illegally.

In order to excel in special teams you need take risks, like return kicks, try to block punts, etc. those come with some potential downsides, and PJ will never do that.

Since we’re talking special teams, why is Quentin Redding still returning kicks? He’s horrible at it.

I was actually just about to give some props to Redding. Despite the fact that I don't forgive him for BIG mistakes in the NW game.....and despite the fact that he still looks really shaky.....fair catching Iowa's last punt at the 10 was a lowkey big play. He lets that bounce.....reasonable chance that they pin us up against the goal line.....which doesn't only put us in safety danger (almost had one earlier in the game).....but also gives Crawford no room to work with when we inevitably punt.

It's a routine play that you expect a returner to make.....even at that point in the game.....but considering how dysfunctional the special teams have been outside of kicking (due to an excellent place kicker).....you can't shrug off how important that play was. Nice work, Redding.

He’s averaging 12 yards per kickoff return and I can’t recall the last time he even tried to return a punt. Not letting a ball bounce and not fumbling is a pretty low bar, although I guess that does match the PJ Fleck play it safe approach.

I agree. Just thought that was a big play that our bumbling special teams have been screwing up.

But giving Wenger credit for Kesich making some FG's is about akin to crediting a First Base coach in baseball with the batters being able to find their way to First Base.

The Gophers would not have beaten Iowa or Nebraska without Kesich this season. Wenger deserves a little more credit than that. Kesich came in as a kickoff specialist and now he's one of the best kickers in college and has a legitimate NFL future ahead.

Kesich is the bomb.

I doubt it?

Wenger's job is to prepare and make sure that all five phases of Special Teams are ready to go on Saturday; KO, KR, Punt, PR, and FG/XP. There is almost certainly one (maybe two?) person on staff who is actively working with the Kickers and Punters on mechanics, footwork and timing and I would almost bet my life that person is NOT Wenger.

From this angle it definitely looked like #24 held up while DeJean was wildly flailing his arms.

Huh? He tried to make a tackle immediately on DeJean fielding the ball.
And missed.
As did all the other Gophers who tried to make a tackle.

I’m with you and although I think it’s probably PJ and his wife who really like 81 that kid likely couldn’t start at any position for a D3 squad so the fact that he can’t talk PJ out of that just by itself means he is an idiot. On top of that generally are special teams are no threat and are below average.
Learn from Iowa. No accident their ST are really good. They coach it, teach it, and make it equal in emphasis to defense and offense.

Well, I guess you could say we were lucky that the referees actually knew the rules and DeJean didn't.

So, hey... you be you, and "enjoy" this huge win in your own way.
DeJean and Ferentz know the rules too. Nothing done by accident or mistake.

I get the frustration and agree he probably shouldn’t play but this is incredibly stupid.

He tried to make a tackle after the whistle didn't blow and DeJean started running. Watson definitely slowed up as if the play was over. And there was at least one or two other Gophers who could have leveled DeJean the second he touched the ball and didn't. Why? Probably because they thought the play was going to be blown dead.

Again....the reason for this rule is to eliminate confusion on whether a play is live or not. I'm not sure a few guys expected it to keep going.

You know, Dak, when that theory was first floated here on Gopher Hole, I thought it baseless. Now I'm beginning to think it might have some merit.

Dak, let me ask you this: do you recall the penalty called on Tyler Nubin for fair catch interference? I may be imagining this, but when the play happened in real time, I thought it was clear that the call was obviously correct. But then (again, if I recall correctly) they (briefly) showed two different replays.

The first was the original angle, and it looked like Nubin bumped him.

The second replay (unless I imagined it) showed the play from a different angle. This one appeared to show DeJean extending his arm to initiate the contact with Nubin, while pushing Nubin away.

Did anyone else see that, or am I hallucinating?

Your eyes are fine. DeJean clearly pushed Nubin (you can see Nubins uniform move on contact) and then DeJean immediately steps back and points at Nubin asking for a penalty. The ref took the bait.

That reinforces the idea that the Hawkeyes are good at working the refs and pulling underhanded crap.

Just like they were probably coached to swipe the ball out of the center’s hands and use confusing fair catch signals. I think Captain Kirk gets a thrill from getting away with bush league junk like this.

Nubin was called for being too close to DeJean when he caught it. The only contact between the two was just before the ball arrived DeJean shoved Nubin in the chest with his right hand.

Y'all want to fire somebody new every week, it's actually comical😂. Can we just relax and enjoy our moment in the sun without sending someone up to the chopping block?

Nothing bush league about trying to put the coverage team to sleep then running a punt back to win the game. Ferentz is there to win. Nothing else.

Even before that, DeJean was waving, the Iowa blocker ran away from him, and #24 stood there for a second, then the ball bounced and he ran towards the ball, then tried to make the tackle when DeJean picked it up and started running.

Exactly. I watched it again tonight. A terrible call, and it identifies Dejean as a cheater. He knows exactly what he is doing. That play should make the rounds on social media next.
