Fire Ben Johnson

That was a fun season. I think Pitino was here eight years. His B1G record was 49-85.
*54-96.

I like to have some drinks and post when I'm home, but sometimes am curious about the Strib level of fact checking on here.

If it is impossible to succeed without big NIL money than hire me, I'll do it for 300k and we can use the difference on the football team.
300?

Ha I'd do it for 50k.

Keep my full time job while I'm at it and deliver better or at least equivalent results for the progrum.

Speaking of NIL, today Michael Rand said that the Gophers are at 7m, 12th in the Big Something or Another. Ohio State, was #1 with 20m, and Michigan and Michigan State were up in that bracket.

During the football season I saw several references to Ohio States 20m team. Those reference implied that Ohio State spent 20m on the football program alone? It was never clear if this was meant to mean simply NIL cash, or total expenditure?

Rand also mentioned that the Gophers NIL money gets allocated heavily to the football side of things? Which is numerically understandable. What if other schools where football is not the end all of end alls? Would an Indiana, in a normal year, or a Rutgers allocate on a different basis. Or extending past the Big Whatever It Is, would other conferences have teams that would spend a far higher percentage of their NIL on basketball?

He's largely making all that up based on one source that is not real reliable.

Well hopefully Mark listens to his own rant here as it pertains to his program. For me, the justification for moving on from Ben Johnson is as simple as the program hasn't even been on the fringes of the conversation for a bid to the tournament at any point during his tenure. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but they haven't ever been close. They are the only legacy B1G team to not make a tournament during his four year run. Washington is the only new add to the conference that can claim the same and they moved on from their previous coach. That level of ineptitude is hard to do.

Selection Sunday would probably know for sure but I think there was some bubble talk last year prior to dropping 4 of the last 5 in the regular season. But that would be it.

Interview like this should give those terrified that Coyle is desperate to keep Ben around some hope because it would look pretty foolish for him to talk about the importance of making the NCAA tournament and then keep rewarding a coach who doesn't seem even close to doing it.

Even if I believe Rand (nope) every school with P5 football will allocate more to football than basketball. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why...

Then I must be that genius, since I mentioned that in the post?

If revenue sharing is adopted this article estimates the amount of money available to the schools in each conference. It also includes total revenue of the top 15 athletic programs. Five Big Ten Schools are in the list, Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State, and Wisconsin. The numbers are not related to current NIL dollars.

The continuing emphasis on DEI is starting to make some of the posters in here sound just a tad racist? That said, there are two factors here that impact the Gophers record, or for that matter any coaches record. One is the ability to coach. Anyone who watched last nights game would have to have been visually impaired not to have noticed the difference in the athletic ability in the two teams. NO amount of basketball coaching could have overcome that disparity. Illinois could have lost that game, but the Gophers could have never won it!

The other is the ability to recruit. In the NIL era that’s a moving target. It’s all about the money. If the U is not able to improve its level of financial renumeration, in whatever format, no one is going to come in here and simply turn the recruiting switch on against teams with far larger bankrolls. If that would be the case, Gopher Holes beloved PJ Fleck would be standing shoulder to shoulder with Ohio States 20 million dollar roster. How’s that working out for us.

Before we throw yet another coach under the bus, take a look at what said coach has to work with. Or ask little Pitino. But that may not work, I doubt he would answer the phone!
Utter nonsense.

It has been reported that Ohio State ended the fiscal year 48 million dollars in the red. The NIL did not save them. They bet the house that their teams would pull in more than they spent. They missed the mark by $48 million. Minnesota didn't bet the house and looks to rise a rung up the ladder as a result of its fiscal conservancy. When all is said and done, I am not so afraid of the need for NIL money as much as I am concerned with moving too quickly and going into debt, pushing away future NIL attractive athletes. Steady growth is better than play money with a back load of debt.

A big part of that OSU shortfall, according to the article, is that they played 2 fewer home games in the 2023 season (the year all these numbers were measured) than in 2022, so they lost $14.5M in ticket revenue, plus they had another $9.2M in severance payments to former coaches. The article stated the loss was a one time occurrence.

The number that stands out is the end of year deficit.

Yeah, poor Ohio State. What do they have to show for all that money.

I mean, you know, besides the national championship.

Upcoming cuts. the natty might be a hard thing to replicate.

Probably just get more from the university. They don't really care. Rutgers does the same without the success.

Imagine the largess of the federal research programs being cut deeply this year as proposed by Trump. Do you think Ohio State is going to continue to dip deeply into its slushy endowment so that the football team wins another championship under conditions of severe austerity?

I don't know how that will turn out, but there is an argument for going for it while you can. That success can then lead to more.

I checked history on GopherHole to confirn, and last season I never had the Gophers in the bubble conversation. So for sure it's been all 4 seasons not even a sniff.

Thanks for checking. Makes sense that the soft non-conf schedule kept the bubble just out of reach prior to dropping 5 of the last 6.

BTT is a month away. Surprised we don't have a countdown to the coaching change clock on the site as it should happen at some point in the next 30 days now. :)
