Engel status UPDATED 11/22: Rumors confirmed, torn ACL

I'm not going to try and pretend to know if this is true or not, but IF it is true I'm shocked not one actual journalist has broken the story. They must be running a real tight ship over there to have kept this quite since Sunday (again, assuming random mustachioed tweeter is correct).

Also, if true, I think we can replace his production. That being said, I will feel really bad for the kid. To have this happen right before Senior Day and the Wisconsin game is just terrible timing.

We still don't have a credible source. But the silence is not a good sign. If it was false, someone would have come out and called BS. The silence means they are hiding something.

Oustide of GH, I don't know if it is getting enough traction to warrant a response. I certainly haven't seen anything about it on my twitter feed. A guy with 35 Twitter followers tweeting 'so & so is injured' doesn't really get me concerned until I hear it from a credible source. (EDIT: NOT DOOGIE OR FULLER :) )

I don't really subscibe to the idea that 'since they haven't denied it, it must be true' theory. I guess we will have to wait to find out during Coach's news conference today what exactly is going on and hope for the best.

I have no doubt it's true. Every time something crappy happens with our team it starts off as an unknown source breaking an unconfirmed rumor. Typical reaction is angry fan denial, take shots at the source, then comes confirmation & acceptance. This is how these stories break.

I'm not saying this isn't true but put me in the camp that says I have a hard time believing they would be able to keep this quiet for two-three days. This would be a big loss for them going into a huge game and word would get out to the media one way or another.

It smells to me like a hoax put out by a Ginger and Cheese version of our panther named prankster to the south.

We Gophers fans just can't catch a break, can we?!

This is what popped into my mind as well and this is why I am now assuming the worst with a hope that this time it isn't true.

It is kind of like that Shaka Smart basketball thread... except it isn't funny at all.

I was just going to post this same thing.

Pretty much this. There's very little reason for someone to make this up, and there's no reason for the team to say anything about it until the press availability today.

paging AJ Barker......

NOT!

If only Engel would have been smart enough to ignore team doctors and opt for acupuncture, we might not be in this mess.

On a more serious note, I hope this isn't true. If it is, that hurts for the team losing a great leader, and terrible to see a senior go down before the biggest game of his career after he was such a key part of getting us there. It that's the case, next man up. I think I'm assuming the worst as a defense mechanism for the sake of my mental health, but I'm obviously awaiting news one way or another from a credible source.

Yeah Jones and Wolitarsky are decent enough options, but Engel is the guy that has made the bailout play more often than not this year (from the receiver position, anyway). For such a really young offense losing the only contributing skill position senior would be a blow.

Never like to see a player's career end due to injury. Feel for him if it is true.

My brother called me last night and told me about Engel's ACL injury. He lives in Chaska and also talked to Engel's Dad last night and was told he hurt it in practice on Monday. This really sucks for the Engel's and the Gopher's.

Engel, Derrick 10 25 401 16.0 5 48 40.1
Williams, Maxx 10 17 299 17.6 4 50 29.9
Cobb, David 10 14 148 10.6 0 27 14.8
Wolitarsky, Drew 10 8 109 13.6 0 19 10.9
Fruechte, Isaac 10 8 97 12.1 0 22 9.7

^^ I was just looking at the same stats.

Make no mistake, this is a big loss.

Isn't he our only WR to catch a TD pass this season??

Looks like more passes to Williams, Jones, and Wolitarsky

Why is Kill not confirming the ACL? Does Engel's dad simply have a hunch, or does he know for a fact?

Still holding out hope until it is until comfirmed by TMZ.

Why is Kill not confirming the ACL? Does Engel's dad simply have a hunch, or does he know for a fact?

Because Kill said need results from the MRI first before he will comment further on the subject. Makes sense to me.

Right, but the initial report was that it was a torn ACL. I don't think Engel's father would make such a bold conclusion without knowing the results of the MRI already.

Furthermore, I would think Jerry Kill would be one of the first people to know the results of the MRI.

So, it's one of two things:

1. Kill knows it's an ACL and is not yet revealing it. Perhaps to try and maintain a competitive advantage and keep Becky in the dark.
2. Engel's father came to a premature conclusion and told someone it was an ACL.

I'm reading between the lines on all this and don't like what I'm hearing. Seeming likely that Engel is done. We have WRs with higher up-sides on the roster, but no one playing at a higher level than him right now. He and Maxx are Nelson's top targets so this hurts bad. Really need a breakout game from Drew or Donovhan. Tough spot to ask for that. Fack!!!

Not saying this isn't a big loss - very dissapointing! But maybe this will be someone else's chance to shine. Much like Engel did after AJ left. Maybe Jones goes crazy or Harbison actually has a pass thrown his way or Wolitarsky gets 150 yards or...
