Engel status UPDATED 11/22: Rumors confirmed, torn ACL

Kill seems to always wait until an injury is confirmed before announcing it officially; this isn't new.

I agree this is very sad for Engel and very unfortunate for the Gophers. I also agree Wolitarsky and Jones will need to step up big time in the final 3 or 4 games, but I also think Fruechte needs to be a go-to guys as well. Also wouldn't hurt if Maye and Harbison would show up.

Depending on the severity of the injury, perhaps, since Engel is a senior, he may be able to play this week. If JK wants to hedge for a competitive advantage, I support that. I know it's crazy to say this, but he mentioned Logan Hutton, who made a couple of special teams plays. It's not out of the question that Engel's absence might open the door for a future star who might be about to have a coming out party.

Surprised no one asked whether Bak is back...

Also... there has been a lot of talk about Karma lately. I find this strange this should happen right at the time when a new thread crops up about AJ Barker - full of a lot of posts describing how little we need him.

disclaimer: before people start ripping on this comment with "we don't need a quitter" or "we wouldn't want a guy of that character anyway" - I get that. I'm referring to his ability, not his personality or character.

We could have used him all season - a lesson in the dangers of burning your bridges, especially when you're young.

The good news is the team and coaches have all week to prepare without Derrick...so Jones & Wolitarsky can get the reps and build more confidence going into Wiscy.

Far worse to have him go down late in the week or during the early part of the game...

Feel bad for Derrick and wish him the best...truly a classy kid and great representative of the U and the team.

Right, but the initial report was that it was a torn ACL. I don't think Engel's father would make such a bold conclusion without knowing the results of the MRI already.

Furthermore, I would think Jerry Kill would be one of the first people to know the results of the MRI.

So, it's one of two things:

1. Kill knows it's an ACL and is not yet revealing it. Perhaps to try and maintain a competitive advantage and keep Becky in the dark.
2. Engel's father came to a premature conclusion and told someone it was an ACL.

They may have done the stability test and have a good hunch it is a torn acl, but may not be able to guarantee with 100% certainty until after an MRI. Either way, guessing its fairly serious and at absolute best maybe he is back by the bowl, but probably doubtful for that.

Still no official word on Engel's knee, but word on Monday night was "90 percent'' that he had a torn ACL.

So you're sayin' there's a chance...

Ya. This is a sure thing for me now. I don't even need to hear it officially.

When I tore cartilage in my knee, my Doctor gave me the opposite odds, 90% chance it was a cartilage tear, but they're never sure until they get an MRI. I'm betting we know on Thursday they generally wait 48 hrs for the swelling to subside to get a clearer picture.

I know you and mcal24 didn't mean it this way at all, but I don't think what will could be a career-ending injury for Engel is anything to playfully make a joke about using a catch line from a movie.

When I had my MCL tear, it was extremely painful. I had to get cortisone shots in addition to icing and anti-inflammatory meds. Depending on the severity, they may give him the shots to see if he can play. The question is, does he want to play, and whether the coaches think he should sit it out. This is his senior year. This is his final battle for the Axe. I think they be better off letting him heal up for the bowl game come January.

Lighten up. Everyone on this board has the utmost respect and appreciation for Engel and what he's contributed to the program.

I've read this a couple of times and still can't figure out if you're serious. I finally decided there's no way you could be. There's nothing about my statement or mcal's follow-up that is in any way disrespectful. Just the opposite would be my intention, and I think the logical conclusion.

Nothing disrespectful in your post. His response was posted it at midnight. Maybe it was just a long day.

"Lighten up Francis" Ha, another catch line from a movie.

FWIW, I know Ginger Stache Man, there would be no reason for him to lie about this.

Can you confirm or deny that #GingerStacheMan is a dirty, dirty Vadger fan/dick with thousands of posts on the red menace to the east's fan website?

I highly doubt he plays, but there's no point in announcing what the injury is or if he'll play or not. Might as well keep Wisconsin guessing a little.

Good work, jaymill! I have been working on my Pollyanna perspective on this since early Tuesday morning. If he was on the field today, I won't be surprised if he plays!

WR Derrick Engel (knee injury) was able to catch some punts in practice. Kill hasn't ruled him out for Saturday but also said he couldn't go into much detail about the injury.

I highly doubt he plays, but i seriously doubt he torn his acl. If he did had a torn acl, it would have been already talk about by local media peoples. I just don't think we should be believing anyone right now.

Another thing. don't believe this Domino WWBD. I don't think he has sources of any kind. Their is no other peoples reporting that he torn ACL. i wonder how Domino WWBD got news of Engel toen his ACL, i highly doubt Domino WWBD is right on this one.

It seem to me, he may not have torn his ACL as some think he did.

Hopefully you're right. As for this week, Engel not being there is a huge hit to a game that was already not great odds of winning, since it further diminishes the passing game, which is the best way to beat the Wisc D; and Engel being Nelson's favorite target. BUT, you never know! Perhaps Nelson finds a new favorite.

It could be a case of Engel wanting to make sure 100% that he can't play with the injury so he's giving it a shot, even if it is an ACL. Didn't a Purdue QB play with a torn ACL last year? Derrick's a senior and probably doesn't have an NFL future. I'm sure he'd do anything to play in this game.

I can verify he is a big time Gopher Fan who despises UW.

Maxx is a candidate for favorite target, but I'm hoping we find a WR for that role, too.

I'm pretty sure I've heard of some football players playing with ACL injuries as seniors when NFL wasn't likely to be in their future. I've not had the injury so I don't know about the pain threshold.

I hadn't even thought about it until reading this, but as important as Derrick Engel is in the passing game, his presence would really be missed on punt returns. For some reason, Marcus Jones can't seem to catch punts unless they come down right where he's standing, and it cost us a lot of field position until Engel took over those duties and solidified things.

I think we'll see Woli back there fielding punts on Saturday.

So he definitely didn't tear his ACL if he caught punts this week.

I would imagine for athletes at this level, pain threshold would not be the factor as much as diminished range of motion/strength with certain movements, especially lateral movements. It would shock me if any amount of pain would keep Engel off the field, if he doesn't go its because his injury reduces his effectiveness to the point that he is not the best option.
